“I can’t,” she said, looking towards Freda. I smiled at her. “Trust me. I’ll take care of her,” I said. She
looked down at Francisco and found that he was already nodding off. She took the iPad from him
and lifted him in her arms. She walked towards me in what she tried to make an intimidating
manner. “Pinky promise?” She asked, squinting her eyes and holding out her hand to me.
“Promise,” I chuckled and held out my right pinkie. She did the promise thing and then looked in
Freda’s direction.
She seemed to be asleep again. Lyra walked to her, not caring that the doctor was standing there,
and kissed Freda’s forehead. “I’ll be here in the morning, sis,” she said and walked back towards
me. “Have one of the guards drive them home in my car,” I told Dane and he nodded. “You got it.
See you tomorrow, Alpha,” he said and walked out of the door with Lyra who was carrying
Francisco. I rubbed my hand over Francisco’s head as they left because he was already fast asleep
and I didn’t want to wake him up just to say goodbye. I knew I was going to see him tomorrow
anyway.
I watched the doctor as he set back up the bags of drips that were flowing into her veins. He had
cleaned her wrists and pierced them again. Wolfsbane took away every part of a person that made
them a wolf. That meant Freda did not heal immediately. Her hands were still injured.

I sighed and walked towards the doctor. “What are these?” I asked him, looking at the bags of drips
that were dropping down the tube connected to her arm. “They are antitoxins. They are supposed to
help her system dissolve and get rid of the wolfsbane. Just in case her immune system is not strong
enough to do that, the drips start doing that,” he looked at me. “Her system is more delicate than we
can imagine right now. A lethal quantity of wolfsbane is in he body and we cannot take any
chances. Giving her too many drugs could harm her. Giving her too little could do worse. It’s almost
like…” He hesitated and I looked at him, trying to hold myself together as he spoke of my mate like
she was….
“It’s almost like she’s a time bomb,” he said,pleting my thought. He was speaking of her like
she was a time bomb and I did not know what to make of that. I did not know whether to punch him
in the face for joy, having faith in how strong my mate was and the things she had endured. “I’ll be
honest with you, Alpha,” he said, bringing my eyes up to his again.
“She might not survive this,” he whispered, and hearing the words out loud was like a punch to my
gut. “If she had been brought in immediately, it was done; we could have found a way to neutralize
it. Now, it’s seeped too deep into her system,” he said, and I held up my hand.
I took a step closer to him. “Don’t say any of those words anymore. You will do your best, and you
will save her life. You have no alternative. Do you understand me?” I said through gritted teeth,
staring down at him. He swallowed and nodded.
I nodded as well. “Good. I need some time with her. Are you done?” I asked him and he nodded. “I
