Chapter 13.6

Dresden swore and said that he''d have to have a talk with them at a later date.  The Maud piped up and said she''d already done that.  Dresden asked why he was the last to know.  Everyone laughed and he was starting to get mad.

The maid said that he had a tendency to ignore what was right in front of him.  And that if it didn''t involve him in some way he ignored it.  Rutus said he should tell the maid about the time he made her slap him in the face.  He paused and asked when she did that.

Rutus just shrugged and said if he didn''t remember, it clearly didn''t have as much effect on him as it did on her.  They all watched as he thought really hard.  As he wracked his brain Shiloh popped into the conversation.

She asked about the time he got all up in Endermon''s face and called her all sorts of nasty things.  He looked at Endermon who kept her face neutral, even though inside she was reliving the memory and was not enjoying the fearful sensations.

Breathing deeply, she pushed the memory aside, and asked him if he remembered nearly getting a towel snapping in a very intimate place.  Dresden grimaced and said yes, he was out of line and should not have spoken to her that way.

Endermon said that just proved the maid''s point.  Unless it had something to do with his self, ego, or parts, he didn''t remember it for very long.  Dresden didn''t like that so he sulked for a bit.

By the time they stopped for dinner, they had covered lots of topics.  Everyone pitched in to make dinner and they sat eating in companionable silence.  The only time they said something was to ask to pass something.

When dinner was over they all pitched in to clean up and set the beds up.  And once that was over, they bid each other goodnight and went to sleep.  After a quick breakfast and some coffee when they woke up, they were off again.

They were still in the process of being fully awake, when they heard the sounds of a stringed instrument being strummed.  They stopped and watched as a traveling musician passed by them.  He tipped his hat and continued on his way.

Endermon recognized him ad the same one she saved from Shiloh inadvertently.  Shiloh Saud he eould have been tasty.  Endermon said she did eat that night.  They went back and forth for a few minutes, but ultimately the conversation dried out so the could continue to wake up as they rode on.

The cycle of ride, eat, sleep was broken up by occasional hunting, leg stretches, and bits of recreation.  But eventually they returned home.  The cook had a meal ready for them.

As they sat and ate, they talked about their time away.  Dresden took over the conversation about how he got the young kids of the village to be a hunting club.  But the maid would interject and Dresden eventually got the hint.

Rutus spoke about being a landowner.  She said it wasn''t much, but it would help her get her blacksmithing business off the ground.  The servant leaned over to say congratulations.  Rutus said she''d take them there someday.

Before jumping into what happened at the palace, Endermon asked the staff what they''d been up to since they left.  The cook said they had discovered som new recipes and were excited to try them out.

The butler said he had taken up needlework.  He said he found it relaxing.  And painful when he stabbed himself with the needle.  Everyone chuckled.

The servant had started adding wood to their projects, so they said they''d like to properly learn carpentry.  Everyone nodded their approval, and they jumped when the stablehand said they''d like to learn to do magic.

Endermon asked if they had learned any tricks and they shyly said they had one that they had been working on.  They pointed at Dresden and said they needed his help.  Dresden shrugged and asked what he needed to do.

They said he just needed to hold out his right hand.  The hand that just happened to have a big gaudy ring on it.  And by sleight of hand and distracting Dresden, in a few seconds, had the ring on their hand.
