Awakening The Unknown

    Chapter 5: Awakening the Unknown

Kael’s chest rose and fell with heavy breaths as the last of the stone guardian crumbled before him. The chamber was eerily silent now, save for the distant drip of water echoing through the ancient halls. The battle had left him drained, his limbs aching from exhaustion, but the adrenaline still burned in his veins.

    Then, it happened.

A cold shiver ran down his spine as the ruins trembled beneath him. Dust cascaded from the towering pillars, the once-dormant symbols carved into the stone walls now pulsating—not with the dim, steady glow from before, but with an erratic, feverish intensity.

Kael’s grip tightened around the Ruined Blade of the Forgotten. His instincts screamed that something wasn’t right.

    And then—

[Quest Completed: Survive the Trial of the Forgotten]

    Rewards:

    +5 Strength

    +3 Agility

    ??? (Pending Activation)

A flickering blue interface materialized before his eyes. Only he could see it—this strange, unseen system that had been with him since he awoke in this world. His pulse quickened. What was the pending reward?

Just as the thought crossed his mind, a deep, resonant chime echoed through the ruins.

    A new notification flashed.

    [Hidden Reward Activated]

Title Unlocked: Chosen of the Forgotten]

    Effect: ???

Kael’s vision blurred. A sudden, overwhelming force surged through him, seeping into his very bones. It wasn’t just an increase in strength or speed—it was something deeper, something that coiled around his very essence like unseen chains.

His heartbeat pounded in his ears as knowledge—foreign, ancient, terrifying—whispered into his mind.

Kael’s eyes snapped open, and for a brief moment, he saw the ruins differently. The walls, once silent and cold, now thrummed with an invisible energy. The shattered guardians, reduced to rubble, still carried an eerie presence, like echoes of a past unwilling to fade.

He looked down at his own hands. A faint mark, barely visible, had appeared on his forearm—a twisted insignia resembling the symbols on the ruins. It pulsed softly, the sensation crawling beneath his skin like a distant heartbeat.

A sickening realization settled over him.

Whatever this reward was… it had bound him to the ruins in ways he didn’t yet understand.

    Then, the air shifted.

A cold breeze swept through the chamber, but it carried no scent of dust or decay. It was sharp. Unnatural.

And it was followed by a sound—

    A low, guttural growl.

Kael’s breath hitched. He turned slowly, every muscle tensed. His eyes scanned the darkness beyond the throne where the guardian had fallen.

Something was moving. Something was waking up.

    Then, it stepped forward.

A figure emerged from the shadows, its massive frame covered in obsidian-like armor, jagged and unnatural. Its body pulsed with veins of eerie blue energy, the same glow as the ruins. But its face—its face—was not stone.

    It was flesh.

A warrior, ancient and preserved, his features twisted in agony yet filled with rage. His eyes burned with an unnatural blue flame as he locked onto Kael.

    And then, the system trembled.

[New Enemy Identified: Fallen Guardian – Harbinger of the Forgotten]

    Rank: ???

    Threat Level: Extreme

Kael barely had time to react before the Harbinger vanished from sight.

No— it wasn’t gone. It was moving.

Before Kael could even blink, a fist slammed into his gut.

Pain exploded through his body as he was launched backward, his body crashing through one of the stone pillars. He gasped for air as agony shot through his ribs—too fast, too strong!

The Harbinger didn’t pause. The air itself seemed to twist around it as it moved again, its presence a blur of death.

Kael forced himself up, instincts taking over. He raised his sword just as the creature struck again, deflecting the blow by a hair’s breadth. The force still sent him skidding back, his feet dragging through the dust.

    This wasn’t a mindless guardian.

    This was something else entirely.

The Harbinger lifted its hand, fingers curling into a claw-like grip. The air hummed—and then, from the shattered remains of the fallen warriors, black tendrils of energy rose, swirling toward its body like it was absorbing the very remnants of the battle.

Kael’s mind raced. It was growing stronger.

His grip on his sword tightened. He had to think. He had to find a weakness.

The ruins had given him a title. “Chosen of the Forgotten.” But what did it mean? Why had the system marked him? And why did he feel an overwhelming sense that this battle was only the beginning?

The Harbinger exhaled, its fiery gaze locking onto him.

    And then, it charged.
