Chapter 4: Echoes of the Fallen

The air was thick with dust and tension.

Kael’s breath came in ragged gasps as he tightened his grip on the Ruined Blade of the Forgotten. The guardians stood motionless for a brief moment, their glowing eyes flickering as if processing his presence. The pulsating symbols on the ruins cast eerie light across the chamber, illuminating the battlefield of stone and shadows.

His body ached from the earlier clash. His arms felt like they had been struck by a hammer, and every muscle screamed in protest. But he couldn’t stop now.

The system’s quest still loomed over him—

[Quest: Survive the Trial of the Forgotten] Objective: Defeat the Guardians of the Ruins. Reward: ???

Survival wasn’t a choice. It was the only path forward.

The first guardian, a towering warrior carved from stone, shifted its stance. Its massive sword gleamed under the dim blue light as it raised the weapon once more. Kael’s instincts screamed, and he barely managed to sidestep as the blade came crashing down, splitting the ground where he had stood just moments before.

He retaliated, swinging his weapon at the guardian’s exposed flank. The Ruined Blade connected, but instead of cutting deep, it only chipped away a few fragments of stone. Too shallow. Too weak.

The second guardian, the monstrous beast with jagged claws, moved next. It lunged at him, swiping with unnatural speed. Kael barely managed to lift his blade in time, blocking the strike but getting thrown backward from the force.

    They were too strong.

His mind raced. He needed to find a weakness.

Then, something caught his eye—the glowing symbols on the walls. They pulsed every time the guardians moved, reacting to their presence. A connection.

Kael gritted his teeth. If they were connected to the ruins, then maybe...

He adjusted his stance, shifting toward one of the larger pillars covered in markings. The guardians advanced again, relentless. The stone warrior swung horizontally, aiming to cleave him in two. Kael ducked low, letting the blade pass over him before dashing toward the pillar.

The moment he reached it, he plunged his sword into the glowing symbols.

A pulse of energy erupted from the point of impact, sending shockwaves rippling through the chamber. The symbols flared violently, and the guardians staggered.

    Kael’s heart pounded. It worked.

    But he wasn’t done yet.

Seizing the opening, he yanked his blade free and turned on the stunned stone beast. He surged forward, pushing his exhausted body to move faster than ever before. With everything he had, he swung the Ruined Blade at the creature’s glowing core.

The impact sent cracks splintering across its body. The glow in its eyes flickered violently before—

    BOOM!

The beast exploded into a cloud of shattered stone and dust.

Kael stumbled back, chest heaving. One down.

The warrior guardian, now regaining its senses, let out a deep, resonating sound—almost like a growl. Its movements became faster, more aggressive, the weight of its strikes increasing with each attack. It was adapting.

Kael barely avoided the next slash, rolling across the debris-covered ground. He had to end this now.

His eyes darted toward the throne at the end of the chamber. The epicenter of the ruins.

If the symbols were tied to the guardians, then perhaps the throne—

    He didn’t hesitate.

With everything he had left, he sprinted toward the massive, crumbling throne. The guardian followed, relentless in its pursuit. Kael could feel the energy around him shifting, the very ruins trembling beneath his feet.

The moment he reached the throne, he raised his sword high—

And drove it into the heart of the ancient seat.

    The reaction was instant.

A wave of energy exploded outward, engulfing the entire chamber in blinding light. The guardian let out a deep, distorted roar as cracks raced across its entire form. It tried to move, to resist, but the symbols on its body shattered.

With one final groan, the warrior collapsed, breaking apart into nothing but rubble.

    Then, silence.

Kael fell to one knee, gasping for breath. His vision blurred, his body screaming in exhaustion.

    And then, the system chimed.

A tired smile formed on his lips. He survived.

But as the dust settled and the ruins grew quiet, he knew one thing for certain—

    This was only the beginning.
