Chapter 236

    Chapter 236

Cordelia tumbled down the staircase. Her stomach and head were throbbing in a painful chorus. She

tried to get up, but her body wouldn''t cooperate.

Downstairs, Brenda had just finished her overtime shift when she heard a thud from the upper level.

Curious, she went to investigate, only to find Cordelia sprawled at the bottom of the stairs, blood

trickling from a cut on her forehead.

Without wasting any time, Brenda dialed 911 and apanied Cordelia to the hospital. After a

thorough examination, the doctor reassured them that it was only a severe shock, not a miscarriage.

He patched up Cordelia''s forehead and advised her to stay in the hospital for a few days for

    observation.

Cordelia, weakened and pale, had a hunch about the person behind her fall. Brenda had previously

told her about Manda, a woman who was always lurking around the office, refusing to leave even

though she had been transferred to an dead-end position.

"You gave me quite a scare. I''m just d I was workingte so that I could find you." Brenda was still

    visibly shaken.

“When did Manda leave the office yesterday?” Cordelia asked Brenda.

Her question surprised Brenda. “You think someone pushed you? Do you suspect Manda? But she left

    early that day.”

Cordelia managed a weak smile. “Never mind. I''m not using anyone.”

She didn''t share her suspicions with Brenda, who already had a grudge against Manda. If Manda was

indeed responsible for the intentional harm, Brenda would definitely not let her off the hook. Cordelia

feared the situation could escte and be uncontroble.

“I’ll check the security footage. If it was her, she won’t get away with it,” Brenda stated.

“Don’t bother. There are no cameras in the stairwell. She must have nned it that way.” A cold shiver

ran down Cordelia''s spine as she recalled the push from behind. Being pregnant didn''t seem to deter

her assant. Would Deanna and Samantha have already made a move if they knew she was carrying

    Ronan''s babies?

Their tactics would be far more dangerous, possibly even rendering her infertile. The thought sent chills

    down Cordelia’s spine.

She was lucky Brenda was working overtime this time, but what about next time? It seemed that the

fact she was carrying Ronan''s babies had to remain a secret. You never could be too careful.

“Oh, by the way, are you free tomorrow?” Cordelia asked Brenda.

“If you need me, I''ll make time. What is it?”

“Ronan wants me to pick up some files from his office tomorrow. I can''t go in this condition. Could you

do it for me? I think there will be a lot.” Cordelia was certain about this. Ronan had recently snagged

more than a dozen contracts from First Enterprises, enough for their small firm to stay busy for an

    entire year.

Brenda was taken aback. “Ronan? For you?”

“Yeah. Please hurry, I don’t want anything to go wrong.”

Cordelia fell asleep, her body too exhausted to stay awake. She missed her mother, who would have

brought her chicken soup and listened to her worries. But her mother was gone forever.

The next day, Brenda stood in Ronan''s office. Ronan nced behind her. "You''re alone? Where is

    she?"

"Cordelia? She''s in the hospital," Brenda informed him. She eyed therge stack of files on Ronan''s

desk, her eyes filled with envy.

    "Sick?" Ronan frowned. "What happened?"

"She was pushed down the stairs when the elevator was out of service. I suspect it was Manda, you

know, the one who''s always had a thing for Jamie. Probably because Cordelia is pregnant with Jamie’s

babies. She''s a bit unstable." Brenda pointed to her head.

Ronan’s expression darkened. Brenda suddenly realized that she probably shouldn''t have mentioned

that Cordelia was pregnant with Jamie’s babies. After all, Cordelia had quickly gotten pregnant by

another man after their divorce, which could be a blow to Ronan’s pride.

“Oh, Mr. Evans, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.” Brenda quickly added.

“It doesn’t matter. Is she seriously hurt?” he asked.

“The doctor said she had a shock, and she needs to stay in the hospital for a few days. That''s why she

asked me to pick up the files," Brenda exined.

Ronan pondered for a moment. “What hospital is she in?”

“Mercy Hospital, it''s near our office. Mr. Evans... are you going to visit her? She really is in the hospital.”

Brenda was incredulous, wondering if Ronan doubted whether Cordelia was really injured or just using

it as an excuse to avoid picking up the files.

Considering that Cordelia had been the one to betray their marriage, Brenda couldn''t help but feel

    sympathy for Ronan.
