Chapter 247 No One Born To Be Ruthless

Shirley spoke in a wailed tone on the phone.

Hearing this, Jean felt a buzz within her ears and her expression changed all of a sudden.

"What''s up?" Zed touched Jean on the shoulder wanting to know what happened.

Meanwhile, Shirley cried even louder making Jean jump a little, "Jean…… Jean, my elder sister……"

It was all too much for Jean, she quickly pressed the shutdown button on her cell phone and dropped in

    on the seat.

Her silence scared Zed who didn''t know how to react to this. He stretched out his hands and pulled her

closer, "Jean, who was that? Why are you acting so strange……" he whispered in her ears.

"Nothing serious……" Jean replied looking grave. She realized Zed would need more exnation, so

she exined, "Just an insignificant call."

Trying to act cool made her calm a bit, and she felt her shock subside.

Zed was no fool and knew Jean was hiding something but decided it was best to leave the matter for

    now.

''I''m sure Jean wille to me with her problems if there is something serious.

Maybe the matter is not a big deal hence she doesn''t want to bother me.

It''s okay! I''ll respect her decisions!'' he consoled himself.

The car moved ahead steadily. With her chin rested on one hand, Jean gazed nkly outside the

    window lost in thoughts.

''Why can''t they just leave me alone? That''s all I am asking for. Thank god I got permission from Zed to

visit the hospital alone. I can''t imagine what will happen if he joins me.

What did Shirley mean when she said that father was dying?

Shirley Wen, are you trying to torture me all over again? How could you?

I''m not gonna listen to you anymore.

Even if it is true, you are his daughter and it''s your duty to figure a way out. I have to admit that you''ve

always been smarter than me. You always have more ideas than me when solving problems.

That''s why I''m so relieved to have you take care of Henry.''

These thoughts were meant tofort her but Jean still felt a little uneasy.

    ''Father is dying...…''

These words repeated themselves in Shirley''s voice and Jean trembled once again. She has never

before heard Shirley so scared, and it unnerved her.

''Is Shirley really scared, Or is it just another scheme to fool me?

Did she do so to make me believe her so that she can get what she wants when I arrive?

Shirley Wen, you have cheated me so many times that I find it hard to believe you.

    What should I do now?

Should I go to take a look at him?''

Jean drifted in her thoughts. On reaching her destination, she waved at Zed without actually being

present there. Her body was present, but her mind seemed to be somewhere else.

''Never mind. I should visit Moore first since I am here now.''

After making up her mind, Jean strode towards the hospital gate. With a heavy heart, she entered

    inside.

After a few minutes of walking, she made her way through Moore''s ward. It has been a while since she

visited her friend, and was d to notice he looked much better this time.

Jean''s entry didn''t go unnoticed by Moore because he tried to open his eyes the second he felt a

visitor''s arrival. When he found that it was Jean, he smiled surprise and happiness.

"Jean, why are you here?" asked Moore, trying to sit up, with a smile still stered on his face.

"I came to check on you. I''ve been out of downtown for a few days which is why you didn''t see me for a

while now." As Jean said this, she sheepishly put the fruit basket on the table. "Which one do you

prefer now? Let me clean it for you, " she offered.

"No, don''t do it. Just have a seat here and talk to me, " said Moore. All Moore wanted was to talk with

    this friend.

Nodding her head, Jean sat on the chair nearest to the bed with a smile on her face. "I have to work

tomorrow and may not have time to see you, so I came here today."

"You don''t have toe here so often if you are busy, " replied Moore who felt ashamed of stealing

    Jean''s precious time.

"No, you are here alone in H City, friendless and helpless. I''m afraid you are going to feel lonely if I

don''t visit you." Jean added a sincere smile to let him know she meant each and every word.

"Thank you, Jean." Moore was touched by Jean''s words, "To be honest, I barely have friends in abroad

or at home. You are like my only friend in this world, " said Moore in a grateful tone.

"I''m so honored, " Jean said feeling true happiness build inside her. Her eyes turned bright. "I do not

have many friends either. I am d we met and got to know each other."

"Me, too." Looking at Jean''s happy smile on her face, Moore grinned from ear to ear, with his pearly

    white teeth disyed.

However, Jean''s smile stayed only for a few seconds. It faded when she noticed Moore''s wound. With

a sigh, she said, "Please take good care of yourself and get better soon, so that I can feel less guilty."

"Please don''t say like that…..." replied Moore in a hurry, "I''m better now and I''m recovering quickly.

Please stop ming yourself for everything. Besides, you''re not the only responsible for this

    ident……"

"All right, you''ve told me that before." Jean tried to stop him from getting serious and put a smile on her

face. She then picked up an apple and started to peel it with a knife.

Moore prepared himself for a confession while Jean skillfully peeled the apple. He contemted how to

bring it up. After giving it a thought, he began gingerly, "Jean, I have something to tell you."

"Sure. What''s up?" replied Jean, without taking her eyes off the apple. She was so upied with the

task that she failed to notice the seriousness in Moore''s eyes.

"The woman who followed you earlier came here to ask about you this morning......" said Moore

    hesitantly.

    ''Shirley Wen......''

Jean couldn''t help thinking inside her head. She paused her task of peeling, and put the apple aside on

the table and spoke, "What did she say?"

"She came to ask if you hade to the hospitaltely, and there was an anxious look on her face."

Moore signed and continued, "She looked like something horrible happened to her."

"Alright, I see." Jean replied while she maintained a nk face. She got back the apple and started

    peeling once again.

Looking at the cold look on Jean''s face, Moore figured he had to change the topic right away. He knew

things weren''t cool between Jean and thatdy.

Feeling his gaze, Jean turned and handed the apple to him with a smile. "Do you think I am a ruthless

person, because I don''t have any reaction hearing something like that?" she asked smiling.

"No, I think you have your own reason. I believe you, " replied Moore while he reached out to take the

apple from Jean. He held it and smiled back at Jean. "I''ve seen what that woman did to you before. I

totally get your reaction and it is reasonable."

"No, what you''ve seen is only the tip of the iceberg. I have to turn a deaf ear to her and the people

surrounding her because that is the only way I can live a peaceful life. I know them too well to know

nothing good cane from being near them. I was a fool back then but I won''t let them get to me

now, " she said this with resolution.

Moore nodded while taking a bite off the apple. "You are right. People are forced to be ruthless, no one

    is born like that."

"Well, it sounds that you have some story to tell too, " said Jean sounding interested. These words from

Moore filled her with sadness because there was a real pain in his eyes.

"Well, I didn''t hide it from you that I am an orphan. And to tell the truth, I went to find my biological

parents when I grew up, and found them in the end....."

Said Moore with a wry smile.

"What happened then? Did they let you down?" Seeing the facial expressions on Moore''s face, Jean

    was forced to ask.
