BIT 66

“It was three years ago,” Sean said as he sank into the sofa, watching Reba feed Lily with a bottle.

“My wife, Maggie, gave birth to a baby girl who looked just like me. We named her Bea.. We were so happy, it felt like our lives were truly perfect, but…” Sean took a deep breath, his face bing somber. In front of him, Reba waited tensely for his story.

“But that happiness didn’tst long. I still vividly remember that terrible night. I was on my way back home from the clinic when suddenly I got a phone call from Maggie. She said she had to go to the hospital immediately because her father had a heart attack. I told her to wait a bit, but she refused. She drove hurriedly with Bea in the baby seat, and,” Sean swallowed hard, his hands clenched into fists. He always became emotional when recalling the incident.

“Sean, you don’t have to tell me if it’s too difficult for you,” Reba interjected gently.

“And a few minutester, I got a call from the police saying Maggie had an ident. A drowsy truck driver hit her car. Maggie and Bea, they died on the spot,” Sean finished his story with difficulty.

Reba stared in shock. “Oh my God, I’m sorry, Sean…”

Sean shook his head. “It was all my fault. I should have driven faster. I’mpletely useless,” he said, his eyes staring nkly at the window.

“None of it was your fault. Don’t me yourself,” Reba said, suddenly feeling that her problems were trivialpared to what Sean had experienced.

She looked at Lily and saw that she had fallen soundly asleep. She gently ced Lily back into the phototherapy box after kissing her carefully. Sean stood up, checking the phototherapy box to make sure the machine was working properly.

“I haven’t slept at home since then and chose to spend my time at the clinic. This is the first time I’ve left the clinic after almost three years of spending my nights there,” Sean said without looking at Reba.

“What? So for the past three years, you’ve spent seven days a week, twenty–four hours a day at the clinic?” Reba eximed in disbelief.

“Shh, you’ll wake Lily,” Sean said, putting his finger to his lips.

    Chapter 66:

Reba winced and followed Scan out of the room. “Can I ask you something?” she asked after closing the door. Sean nodded, “Go ahead.”

Reba cleared her throat softly. “What made you stay here and not go back to the clinic? I mean, after three years of never doing this, I feel like I’ve disrupted your routine,” she said carefully.

Sean smiled. “I do it for Lily, that’s it. Well, I think you need a proper rest. Just let me know if there’s anything with Lily and don’t forget to feed her every two hours,” he said casually.

Reba nodded. “Thank you,” she said sincerely.

“No worries, good night!” Sean patted Reba’s back lightly and then went into his room next to the guest room.

Reba sighed deeply. She wanted to sleep but suddenly felt very hungry. She decided to go down to the kitchen, hoping to find something to eat before going to bed.

“Hey, Becky!” Ang greeted, still busy wiping the kitchen table.

“Ang, you haven’t gone to bed yet?”

Ang smiled. “I’m waiting for my bread to finish baking. Tomorrow is my first breakfast with Sean in almost three years. I’m so excited!” she said, sping her hands together.

    Reba smiled sadly.

“Oh, you must be confused, I shouldn’t

“Sean already told me. The past three years must have been very hard for all of you,” Reba interjected cautiously.

Ang sighed deeply and nodded. “It has been, especially for Sean. He’s brought some of his patients here for me to take care of, but this is the first time he’s stayed here. Even all the clinic staff were surprised to hear about it,” she said, smiling with teary eyes.

cared. didn’t know what to say because, honestly, she felt very touched that s…

Suddenly, Ang took Reba’s hand. “Thank you, Becky. Not that I don’t empathize with your problems, but thank you for bringing my son home,” she said, almost crying.

“1. I didn’t do anything, you shouldn’t thank the Reba replied, gently stroking Ang’s hand.

“Yeah, I know, but still, Ang said, still smiling “Are you hungry?” she asked, a bit surprised when she heard Reba’s stomach growl.

Reba winced in embarrassment and then nodded, “Yeah, do you have something to rat? Bread or anything,” she said, scratching the back of her head.

‘Sit down! I’ll make you some Spaghetti Aglio e Olio. It’ll only take five minutes since I already have boiled pasta, Ang said, not epting any refusal.

Sorry for troubling you,” Reba said, embarrassed.

Ang waved her hand dismissively. “No worries!”

smell something delicious!” Sean eximed, suddenly appearing behind Reba.

Sean? I thought you were already asleep, Reba said, surprised. Têxt ? N?velDrama.Org.

gan shrugged. “It’s not easy to sleep in a new ce,” he said casually.

Oh,e on, Scan! You grew up here,” Ang interjected, pretending to be annoyed.

an immediately went to Ang and gave her a quick hug. “I know, Mom. I’m sorry. nyway, can you make another portion for me?” he asked, smiling broadly, Ang just affed withughter.

oth of you, wait in the backyard. I don’t like people watching me cook, Ang said, ishing Sean away.

et’s go, Becky, I’ll show you the backyard!” Sean said cheerfully. Reba nodded and lowed him.

an stopped in front of a drawer, opened it, and took out a pack of cigarettes, making ba frown in surprise. “You smoke?”

    metimes”

at you’re a doctor, Reba said, confused,

inughed. “Well, I never smoke at the clinic or while I’m working. Don’t worry, I n’t expose my patients to nicotine, he replied half–jokingly.

    Chapter no

Reba winced, but her attention was divertel to the garden in the backyard, especially to the fountain statue surrounded by emerald green lights.

    “Is that-”

“Yeah, Maggie and Bea, Sean interjected, looking at the statue of a woman holding a baby with sad eyes.

Reba gaped in disbelief. She turned to Sean and felt envious because Harvey did not love her and Lily as much as Sean loved Maggie and Bea. “Are you going to continue living like this?” she asked, curious.

Sean shrugged. “I don’t know. I’d feel guilty if I lived normally. Oh, let’s not talk about me. What about you? What will you do after Lily gets better?” he asked, turning to look at Reba.

Reba shook her head. “I’m still figuring it out,” she answered honestly. She just wanted to live in peace, but that seemed difficult to achieve.

“Can I suggest something dramatic?” Sean asked, slipping a cigarette between his lips. Reba frowned. “Dramatic? Let’s hear how dramatic it is,” she said, curious.

“It’s just an idea, so don’t take it too seriously. Um, maybe you could pretend to get married and change Lily’sst name to your fake husband’s. You know, make Victoria feel at ease because one threat is gone,” Sean replied casually.

Reba was stunned for a moment, then snorted. “I don’t know who would want to be my fake husband and endanger his life, she muttered absently.

    “Me.”

    Reba stared in shock.
