Chapter 1697 Something Was Meant To Be
I had decided to stop pressing Sheryl on this. She understood Sheryl''s frustration and didn''t want to
burden her more. So she took Sheryl''s hands into hers and spoke gently, "Sher, remember that we''re
friends. I''m always here to support you. If you have any problems and need a shoulder to cry on, I''m
just a call away, okay?"
"I know that well, I. Don''t worry too much. I''m fine, really. I''m not hiding anything from you. I was just
upset that I failed to get divorced again this time around," Sheryl exined, smiling bitterly.
I believed Sheryl''s words because Sheryl looked sincere and serious.
"Well. I should get back to work now. Don''t forget to eat something, alright? Phoebe got this for you.
She knew that you hadn''t eaten breakfast yet and she was worried that you were starving," I
gestured at the breakfast takeout on the desk.
Sheryl smiled sweetly and nodded, "Please, thank her for me, okay?"
When I had finally left, the smile on Sheryl''s face had faded and she took a deep breath. She tapped
her chin and thought to herself, ''Damn it, Charles! Do you really think that you can prolong this forever?
Somethings are meant to happen. Why are you so stubborn?''
Meanwhile, in the Dream Garden
After Charles had parted ways with Sheryl, he didn''t go back to the Shining Company. Instead, he
decided to return to the Dream Garden.
As soon as he stepped into the house, Melissa rushed to him and asked nervously, "So? Did you finally
get a divorce?"
Charles only ignored Melissa. He just brushed her aside and walked upstairs.
"Charles,e on! Answer me! I''m asking you!" Melissa was getting more and more anxious with
Charles'' silence.
Melissa followed Charles upstairs. Then she winced when Charles mmed his bedroom door shut
and locked it. "C-Charlie?" Melissa spoke helplessly.
Le was downstairs and witnessed what just happened. When she saw Melissa standing outside the
bedroom, she walked upstairs and apanied Melissa to the living room.
Both Le and Melissa were very worried and nervous at the moment. Then finally, Le broke the
silence, "Aunt Melissa, let''s call the attorney so we can find out what happened. If we just stand here,
we won''t know whether Charles and Sheryl have finally gotten a divorce."
Le clenched a fist against her chest. She was desperate for answers.
"You''re right! I''ll give him a call now." Melissa took out her phone upon hearing Le''s suggestion.
"Mason, did Charles and Sheryl finally get a divorce?" Melissa was so eager to know the answer that
she had even forgotten to greet Mason.
The attorney cleared his throat before answering, "Mrs. Lu, Charles and Sheryl didn''t show up in court
today. Hence, they didn''t get a divorce. If they are still pushing on for divorce, they need to make
another appointment."
Melissa''s eyes widened at Mason''s answer, and she slumped down onto the sofa. All this time, she had
thought that her n was finally working, and she could finally get rid of Sheryl.
Because of shock, Melissa hadn''t realize that her phone fell down from her hand to the sofa. Le
picked up the phone and politely said, "Thank you very much, Mason."
Le hung up and then worriedly looked at Melissa. She was as sad and frustrated as Melissa.
Both women fell into dead silence, trying to think of their next n.
After long silence, Melissa sat up straight and turned to Le. "So, Le, what should we do next?"
"Aunt Melissa, we can''t let this go on any longer. If we don''t kick Sheryl out of the Lu Family as soon as
possible, things will only get harder and harder for us. I''ll never be Charles'' wife, and you''ll never be the
hostess of Dream Garden. Sheryl will kick us out of the Lu Family!" Le spat out in anger. Her hatred
toward Sheryl only grew stronger. Why the hell Charles did marry that annoying Sheryl? Sheryl had
always been in her way.
Melissa bit her lower lip, shaking her head. "No. I can''t let that happen! Absolutely not!"
Le and Melissa were worried about the current situation. They had to improve it as soon as possible,
but both of them couldn''te up with any solutions.
They tried to rack their brains together, but they were simply helpless. They were at a loss for what to
do. They couldn''t convince Charles to get a divorce. No matter how angry he was, he wouldn''t bring up
the divorce. And even though Sheryl had insisted on the divorce, he would always do something to
stop it from happening.
Le had realized that she couldn''t convince Charles anymore. The only hope for her now was Sheryl.
She needed to make Sheryl lose her faith in Charlespletely.
She knew that once a woman had lost all her faith in her man, she would leave him forever. Sheryl
wouldn''t be an exception.
The living room went extremely quiet. Nancy, who was in the kitchen, had noticed Charles'' frustration
when he had returned. She wondered what she should cook in order to cheer him up.
But since she had served Charles for a long time, she knew him well. She knew that he wouldn''t have
any appetite when he was upset.
Therefore, Nancy could only sigh. She walked to Melissa and asked politely, "Mrs. Lu, what would you
like for dinner?"
"Ugh! Just cook something-whatever!" Melissa snapped at Nancy impatiently. How could this olddy
be so clueless? How the hell was she supposed to eat anything after hearing such bad news?
But Melissa didn''t want to say anything rude to Nancy.
Nancy walked back to the kitchen. She stared at the food that she had prepared for a bit. Then she
gathered all her courage and dialed Sheryl''s number.
It was business as usual at Cloud Advertising Company.
Sheryl had busied herself with work so she wouldn''t have time to think about Charles too much.
Suddenly, her phone rang and caused her whole body to shiver. Clearly, she hadn''t expected someone
would call her at the moment.
Upon seeing Nancy''s name on the screen, Sheryl quickly answered her phone.
"Good day, Nancy! How are you doing?" Sheryl greeted Nancy cheerfully.
Nancy couldn''t believe her ears. Charles looked so down. She had thought that Sheryl was also having
a hard time, but it seemed Sheryl sounded fine on the phone.
"Sher, are you really getting a divorce from Mr. Lu? Did you go to the court today?" Nancy asked. She
had overheard Melissa, and she knew what was happening in the Lu Family. She wasn''t a fool, and
she knew that Melissa was trying to set Le and Charles up. So Melissa and Le were trying their
best to break up Charles and Sheryl.
Nancy knew what Charles and Sheryl had gone through to be together. A rtionship like theirs should
be treasured. She wished that Charles and Sheryl could have put in more effort into solving their
problems, instead of giving up so easily. After all, Nancy didn''t want either of them to regret it in the
future.
"Yes, Nancy. It''s just that Charles and I weren''t working out anymore. Our marriage hase to an
end," Sheryl replied indifferently.
Nancy had felt that Sheryl didn''t love Charles anymore. But she shook her head, saying that it was
impossible.
"Sher, dearie, Mr. Lu was so sad when he came back home. Is that really what you want? Have you
already made up your mind? Do you really want to leave him so badly? And what about the kids if you
two have a divorce?" Nancy kept asking a series of questions to Sheryl. She was trying to change
Sheryl''s mind and wished that the two of them would make up.
"Nancy, I''m sorry, but it''s just how things are now. And if you get the chance, please, help me persuade
him to sign the papers. I should get back to work now. Bye!" Sheryl took a deep breath. She felt a lump
forming inside her throat, and if she continued talking to Nancy, she would burst into tears. She didn''t
want Nancy to know that she didn''t want a divorce. And there was no way that she could let Charles
find out that she was still in love with him.
She decided to make up some petty excuse and hung up on Nancy.
Upon hearing the busy tone on the other end of the line, Nancy could only sigh and shake her head.
She felt helpless as she continued to prepare dinner.

Meanwhile, Sheryl only stared at herputer screen, lost in thought. She knew that Nancy wasn''t a
nosy person and wasn''t the type to ask too much about personal affairs. After all, Nancy wouldn''t have
called her like that if Charles wasn''t sad.
Yet Nancy didn''t know that Sheryl herself was as sad as Charles. Sheryl closed her eyes and finally
released the sad tears that she had been holding back for so long.
