Chapter 20 : Despair of the sin part 2

“What have you done to me, you filthy little runt?” Gurina’s voice erupted, frantic and jagged, as she thrashed her scythe-arm wildly. She slammed it into the ground, the earth quaking with a dull boom, but her strikes lacked their usual precision. Her body faltered, sluggish and unsteady, as if weighed down by an unseen force. She sniffed the air, mandibles twitching, but no scent reached her. Rubbing her cluster of eyes with a trembling claw, she found only darkness—her vision blurred, fading at the edges. The screams of her enemies, even her own furious roars, dissolved into a dead, suffocating silence. Something was wrong, slithering beneath her chitin like a poison she couldn’t name, and for the first time, the demon staggered, betrayed by the shell she’d always trusted.

No scent of blood. No sound of screams. Just… nothing.

Darkness. Her flesh melted and knitted itself back together in grotesque waves—muscles contorting into unstable mutations, carapace cracking only to seal with oily sinew. It wasn’t healing. It was unraveling. Interference. Sabotage. The words hissed through its mind, cold and foreign. Gurina thrashed wildly, rage boiling as her body betrayed her—a puppet with half its strings cut. Cancerous growths bulged along her limbs, then dissolved into sludge.

Hamza sprinted toward Jack and Observer, his boots kicking up dust as he tore off his shirt in one swift motion. He dropped to his knees beside her, wrapping the fabric tightly around her bleeding hand. Blood soaked through the makeshift bandage, warm and sticky against his fingers, but he pressed harder, desperate to slow the flow.

“You’re going to be fine, Observer,” he murmured, his voice a faint, trembling whisper.

“It hurts like hell, I know, but you’re tough—stronger than I’ll ever be.” His eyes locked onto hers, soft with concern, as he cradled her wounded arm. She writhed beneath his grip, her gasps drowning out his words, the pain too loud in her ears to hear his comfort.

Frustration gnawed at him. He fumbled in his pocket, pulling out three small pills that glinted faintly in the dim light. With gentle urgency, he pressed one into Observer’s mouth, steadying her as she squirmed, her blood-slicked arm trembling in his hold. “Swallow it,” he urged, his tone firm yet tender. Then he turned to Jack. “You too, man—eat it. We’ve got maybe a minute before that thing snaps out of it. The pill I threw earlier? It was supposed to make her to weak and nearly kill it.” His gaze flicked toward Gurina, and his face darkened, a shadow of unease creeping into his frown.

She was a nightmare in motion, hundreds of meters away but close enough to feel. Her black flesh bubbled and sloughed off in grotesque clumps, only to knit back together in an endless cycle of decay and regeneration.

The air reeked of charred rot as she rampaged, slamming into rubble and shattered buildings with blind fury. Each crash sent tremors through the ground, a low rumble that rattled their bones.

“It wouldn’t work on you,” Hamza said, his words tumbling out fast, urgent. “I had to bet on her being the sadistic bastard I thought she was—careless enough to eat it.”

Jack didn’t hesitate. He popped the pill into his mouth, swallowing it dry as he listened. Observer, still dazed, managed to choke hers down too. “Your sorcery’s unreal, Hamza-san,” he said, dipping his head in a quick, respectful bow, though his voice carried a tremor of awe. His face betrayed him, though—his eyes widened, unsettled.

A minion with that kind of power? Then what of Aku

Within seconds, Jack felt a rush—like cool water flooding through his veins. The ache in his battered body faded, the cuts from the battle droids sealing shut with a faint tingle. He flexed his hand, marveling at the renewed strength. The thought shattered as vitality surged through him. He closed and reopened his fist, feeling the weight of his sword in its black sheath once more. But clarity brought a grim realization. “No,” he said, his tone hard. “We go for a killing blow once and run. This is not a fight—it never was. That thing will butcher us when the pill’s effects wear off.”

“I was going to say the same thing. We can try to strike it once but our first priority is escape. No questions”

Hamza nodded, his jaw tight as he glanced at Observer. She lay still now, the pill working its magic, but it’d take thirty seconds to pull her back from the brink. He crouched besides her, his expression bleak, mind racing. “We wait for her to recover,” he said, though doubt laced his words. His eyes darted to the portal flickering above, its blue light casting faint shadows over the wreckage.

Should we even try something this stupid? and just run for it?

The earth shook again, Gurina’s distant roars a brutal reminder of the clock ticking down.

“We need to strike while we’ve got the upper hand, Hamza-san,” Jack said, his voice low and urgent. His mind raced, replaying the fight.

I don’t know if it will even work. That thing could’ve vaporized us in a heartbeat. It was playing with its food before. One misplaced step, and they’d be red confetti.

“One hit, that’s it. You land it. I don’t have the skill or the gear to even scratch it, let alone hurt it. Then we bolt—no hesitation, not a damn second wasted.” *This is suicide. Feels like I’m marching straight to my own grave.*

Hamza grabbed Jack’s hand, his grip iron-tight, though his fingers quivered. His eyes locked onto Jack’s, wide and wavering, fear choking his words into stutters. Jack rested a steady hand on his shoulder, a quiet anchor against the storm of dread. Hamza swallowed hard, drawing courage from the touch.

“She’s here too,” he said, voice firming up.

“I’ve got to protect her. Jack, this is life or death. We try to kill it and run the second we’re done with one try —got it?”

Jack nodded sharply, his hand sliding to his sword’s hilt. He drew it with a soft rasp, the blade glinting faintly in the light of the sun. Thirty seconds had ticked by.

Observer stirred, her strength flooding back as the pill’s effects took hold. Her severed fingers had regrown, flesh knitting seamlessly, and she flexed her hand, testing the unfamiliar wholeness. She blinked, senses sharpening, and spotted Jack and Hamza pressed against the crumbling wall. Their tense silhouettes stood out against the chaos beyond. Her ears rang, a shrill whine fading as the world’s sounds crashed in—Gurina’s guttural roars and shrieks of agony as she tore through everything in her path. Observer’s breath hitched, her body locking up, hands trembling like they’d been lit with sparks.

Hamza flicked her forehead with a quick snap of his finger, jolting her back. He flashed a smirk, crooked but warm. “You’re high maintenance, you know that .” His gaze shifted, peeking around the wall’s edge.

“Observer, open a portal—the farthest damn place you can manage. I don’t care where, just away from this hellhole. We’re will try to kill that thing but regardless of we succeed or not. We need an exit and will sprint here at full speed.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but he cut her off with a sharp look. “No bullshit, or no pet iguana—deal?”

”We will survive this. Just trust me.”

A system message flared in his mind:

[That was smooth. Shitty timing, though. That thing’s way too dangerous for your level. Keep your distance.] Hamza’s smirk twitched, a mix of worry and mischief.

Wow, real shocker there. Thanks for the heads-up, huh? Useful when it counts, he thought, steeling himself.

“Let’s move,” he said aloud, nodding to Jack. They split, darting to opposite sides of the ruined stretch. Observer’s hands moved fast, conjuring a portal. The air warped and twisted, crackling with energy—no soft white glow this time, just a jagged, unstable rift spitting faint sparks.

Forty seconds had passed, and the ground still trembled under Gurina’s distant wrath.
