Chapter 29: Unspoken Deals

The collaboration between Buck and Prince Roland had always been a mutually beneficial arrangement. Buck never intended to serve the prince for free, so when he needed to rely on the prince’s power, he never hesitated or hesitated to ask for it.

The Fourth Prince was just as straightforward with Buck. The day after Buck sent the letter, Roland''s reply arrived in his hands.

“There is no such potion. The memories sealed in slaves cannot be restored through conventional means.” This answer surprised Buck. After reading the rest of the explanation, he learned that the so-called memory seal was a curse ritual that had been partially lost over time.

This curse was extremely tricky, and unless they found the original caster, there was almost no way to break it. Slaves whose memories had been erased were usually drained of all their value before they lost their memories. For various reasons, some people wouldn’t allow them to regain their memories easily.

Many had tried to forcibly break the memory seal, but in the end, they only turned the slaves into fools. Buck felt a deep sense of disappointment, as his plan to explore the memory of the twin maids for clues about God''s Corpse''s Hand seemed to be falling through.

However, as he reached the end of the letter, the prince had written a “unless…” which reignited a glimmer of hope.

    ...

In the afternoon, a beautifully designed yet understated carriage slowly stopped in front of Buck''s house. To Buck''s surprise, Prince Roland himself had come for a visit. When they met again, the prince had returned to his original form, just like when Buck first met him — a composed and radiant royal.

The two dismissed all attendants and sat across from each other in the elegantly arranged parlor. The room was neat, with fine furniture and a few exquisite paintings hanging on the walls, exuding a faint aristocratic atmosphere.

Buck said, “Your Highness, I thought you would never return to this appearance.”

“In comparison to the princess identity, being a prince is indeed more convenient for many matters. For me, changing identities is not difficult; there are many ways to achieve it.” Roland shrugged slightly. On the path of power, the prince seemed willing to use any means necessary to achieve his goals.

“Let’s get to the point. I’m here today because of what you mentioned in your letter.” He pulled out a small, elegant long box from his coat and gently placed it on the coffee table. The table’s smooth surface, carved with delicate patterns, shimmered softly in the sunlight.

“Normally, we truly cannot break the memory seal. But I found an ancient scroll in the royal treasury that describes a special promotion ritual.” The prince gently opened the box, revealing a strange blue scroll. The scroll had a special texture and emitted a mysterious aura, as though it carried the weight of time itself.

“From my investigation, this promotion ritual can enhance the human mind. Its ritual power is from the same source as the memory seal, and it might break the curse. However, I must warn you, this promotion ritual is of unknown origin, and it is only one tier. I do not know what kind of existence it communicates with or what unknown entities it might summon.”

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

Buck reached out to take the scroll, examining it carefully before gently placing it down, resisting the urge to open it immediately. “I understand Your Highness’s meaning. Don’t worry, I will handle this carefully.” The fact that such an ancient item had been buried deep within the royal treasury, almost forgotten, made Buck feel incredibly grateful for the prince’s efforts in finding it.

“Don’t thank me just yet, Buck Frank.” The prince smiled, crossed his legs, and elegantly sipped his tea. “You know I’ve investigated you, so I can guess your intentions behind asking for this.”

Buck nodded slightly and silently waited for the prince to make his request. He knew well that there was no such thing as a free lunch, and the prince must have something to ask in return.

“The person you want to break the memory seal for must be the twin sisters, right?” Roland confessed. When he entered Buck''s home and saw the twin maids, even as a woman, “she” couldn’t help but be stunned by their beauty. Moreover, he knew that these maids had been purchased from a cult by Buck.

“Along with them, there was another very mysterious item, a deep red arm. Am I right?”

As expected of the Fourth Prince, he had uncovered even this secret. Buck fell silent for a moment before nodding gently.

“I’ve always been curious where your enormous life force comes from. Now it seems, it must be thanks to that arm.” The prince paused and gazed at Buck for a moment, seeing no change in his expression. He then continued with a sigh, “Don’t misunderstand, I have no interest in your extraordinary powers. I just want to understand your goal. You know, the royal treasury also has a similar red arm.”

At this, Buck''s expression changed noticeably, a flicker of surprise in his eyes.

“Unfortunately, no one knows how to use that arm. Even with all my efforts, I couldn’t uncover its origins. It seems to be a carefully buried secret, and with my current status, I’m not yet qualified to approach it.”

Buck extended his hand, and looking up, he saw Buck reaching out for something.

“You really aren’t shy, are you?”

“That’s only natural. Your Highness promised me.” Buck said with an air of justification.

Roland laughed, shaking his head slightly. “I remember our agreement. I can give you the scroll directly, but the arm, for now, is not possible.” His gaze suddenly turned deep and meaningful as he asked Buck a question: “Buck Frank, are you ready?”

Buck withdrew his hand in confusion.

“Once you’re ready for tier-two promotion, I’ll assign you another task. The reward for that task will be the arm.”

“Your Highness, if you want me to hunt a target, I don’t think you need to wait until I promote to tier-two.”

“Don’t underestimate your opponents, don’t belittle the danger ahead, and don’t underestimate my enemies. Be patient, and when you’re ready, I’ll tell you the target.” Roland stood up, bringing the meeting to an end with that statement.

As the Fourth Prince left, he cast a peculiar glance at the twin maids once more. He felt as though their delicate faces were familiar, as if he had seen them somewhere before, but no matter how hard he thought, he couldn’t recall where.

Could they be descendants of some noble family? The prince didn’t dwell too much on this; he had more pressing issues to consider. At this moment, his focus was on the obstacles he faced in his pursuit of power.

    ...

As night fell and silence descended, Buck sat alone in his study, taking out the scroll the prince had brought. The fact that there was a God''s Corpse''s Hand hidden in the royal treasury filled Buck with anticipation. However, understanding the origins of the arm remained the top priority.

He looked at the deep blue scroll, which was covered in strange patterns. Only someone like Buck Frank, who had received a formal aristocratic education, could barely make out the ancient characters from hundreds of years ago. Just as Roland had said, this was a promotion ritual. Although the scroll only recorded the first-tier ritual, if he had the twins perform it, it would mean they would step onto the path of extraordinary beings.

After a long period of contemplation, Buck finally decided to open it.

    “Ritual, Foolish Angel.”

As the scroll slowly unrolled, Buck seemed to see a pure moonlight, like a sheer veil, quietly streaming in through the window. In an instant, it bathed the entire room in a cold, frosty white glow. He was filled with confusion and instinctively looked out the window at the night sky. After all, in this world, there should be no moon except for the terrifying celestial body in the southern sky...
