Chapter 48: After the Storm, the Chaos Begins
<hr>
The Aftermath of Victory
Axel barely made it back to his dressing room before his legs gave out.
He collapsed onto the nearest bench, groaning as every muscle in his body screamed in protest.
Tempo sat on his shoulder, completely unfazed.
"Damn," Tempo said, plucking a string on his guitar-axe. "That was beautiful."
Axel grunted. "Shut up and let me die in peace."
The door slammed open.
Iris stormed in, looking pissed.
"YOU IDIOT!"
Axel barely had time to react before she shoved him.
Not hard—but just enough to remind him that, yes, pain was still very real.
"Ow."
Iris crossed her arms. "What part of ‘don’t get yourself killed’ did you not understand?!"
Axel exhaled. "Technically, I didn’t die."
"BARELY!"
Before Axel could argue, the door slammed open again.
This time—Valeria.
And she was grinning.
"Hey, champ," she said, striding in like she owned the place. "Miss me?"
Axel groaned. "I don’t have the energy for this."
Valeria smirked. "You should’ve thought of that before you punched me into next week."
Iris glared at her. "What are you doing here?"
Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.
Valeria raised an eyebrow. "Just checking in on the guy who technically owns me now."
Axel choked.
Iris froze.
"...What?"
Tempo wheezed. "Oh, this is gonna be good."

Valeria’s “Debts”
Axel sat up, groaning. "Okay. Explain. Now."
Valeria leaned against the wall, clearly enjoying this.
"Simple. I lost. And in my family, when you lose a serious fight, you owe the winner a favor."
Axel frowned. "That’s… dramatic."
Valeria grinned. "It’s a noble warrior’s code."
Iris narrowed her eyes. "That sounds made up."
Valeria shrugged. "Maybe. But that doesn’t change the fact that I’m yours now, Mercer."
Axel rubbed his temples. "This is way too much responsibility."
Tempo flicked his tail. "Nah, I love it. What’s the first order, master?"
Axel sighed. "I hate you."
Valeria chuckled. "Relax. I’m not actually gonna call you ‘master’—"
She paused.
Then, leaning in slightly, her voice dropped to a purr.
"...Unless you want me to."
Axel’s brain blue-screened.
Iris made a strangled noise.
Tempo fell off his perch from laughing too hard.
"Valeria," Axel finally managed. "I literally just recovered from nearly dying."
Valeria grinned. "Just keeping things interesting."
Iris sighed violently. "This is ridiculous."
Axel groaned. "Yeah. Welcome to my life."

The Bigger Picture
Once the teasing (mostly) stopped, Valeria’s expression shifted.
Her usual playful smirk faded, replaced by something sharper.
"You do realize that your win wasn’t just a win, right?" she asked.
Axel frowned. "What do you mean?"
Valeria crossed her arms.
"You weren’t supposed to win, Mercer. This tournament—all of it—was never about crowning the best fighter."
Iris tensed. "Then what was it about?"
Valeria met Axel’s gaze.
"To find you."
The air grew colder.
Axel clenched his fists. "So this was a setup?"
"Not exactly." Valeria sighed. "Think of it like a test. A way for the people behind the scenes to see what you’re capable of."
Axel’s stomach twisted.
The mysterious figures. The warnings. The ones who "made sure people like him didn’t last."
He exhaled.
"So what happens now?"
Valeria’s red eyes gleamed.
"Now? They make their next move."
Axel frowned. "And what’s that?"
She smirked.
"They invite you to their game."

A New Challenge Appears
Before Axel could process that, his holo-band pinged.
A new message.
A name he didn’t recognize.
A black insignia.
And a single sentence.
<blockquote>
"Your real trial begins soon. Be ready."
</blockquote>
Axel’s pulse quickened.
Tempo read over his shoulder. "Well, that’s ominous."
Axel exhaled. "Yep."
Iris frowned. "What do we do?"
Valeria smirked.
"We play along."
Axel’s jaw tightened.
This wasn’t over.
Not by a long shot.
And if the people in the shadows thought they could control him?
They were in for a rude awakening.
