    Chapter 28: The Blues Awakens

    The Cost of Defeat

Axel had been in bad fights before.

    But this?

    This was something else.

His body ached in ways he didn’t think possible. Every joint, every muscle screamed in protest as he forced himself up from the Academy infirmary bed.

He wasn’t sure how he even got back.

All he remembered was Revenant’s smile.

    That cold, knowing expression.

Like he had barely used a fraction of his strength.

Like Axel was still just a stepping stone.

Tempo sat beside him on the room’s window ledge, tuning his guitar-axe with slow, methodical precision.

“Still breathing?” he asked, not looking up.

    Axel groaned. “Unfortunately.”

Tempo strummed a chord. The sound was different this time. Slower. Deeper.

    Almost… melancholic.

    Axel frowned. “That new?”

Tempo nodded, plucking another note. The sound resonated, vibrating through the air—not just noise, but something heavier.

    Something felt.

A wave of warmth spread through Axel’s body. The pain dulled—just slightly, but enough to notice.

Axel blinked. “What the hell was that?”

    Tempo grinned. “Blues.”

    Axel stared. “Blues?”

Tempo flicked the strings again, letting the sound drift. It carried emotion. Weight.

“The first step in my evolution,” Tempo said. “Looks like I’ve unlocked a Blues Affinity.”

Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site.

Axel smirked despite himself. “So what, you’re a healer now?”

Tempo strummed another slow, achingly raw note.

Axel’s body relaxed further. The bruising in his ribs felt lighter.

    Tempo grinned. “Looks like it.”

    The Sound of Growth

They returned to the training grounds the next morning, though Axel still felt like he’d been run over by a war beast.

Sienna was already there, analyzing combat data. Ryder was sparring against three opponents at once, laughing every time someone hit the floor.

    And then there was Jace.

He watched Axel approach, his eyes assessing.

    “You’re walking. That’s a good start.”

    Axel snorted. “Barely.”

Jace’s gaze flicked to Tempo. “Something’s different.”

Axel smirked. “Yeah, my monkey’s a blues musician now.”

Tempo rolled his eyes. “You could say that with more respect.”

    Jace raised an eyebrow. “Blues?”

Tempo swung his guitar-axe onto his shoulder. “Music with soul.”

Jace tilted his head, intrigued. “What does it do?”

    Tempo strummed a chord.

The sound rolled through the air, wrapping around the arena like a low, steady heartbeat.

    The energy was different.

Not a direct attack. Not a defense.

    Something in between.

Axel flexed his fingers. “It’s enhancing me,” he realized.

Tempo grinned. “Blues isn’t about force. It’s about feeling. Reading the battle, adapting to the rhythm. Making sure you don’t get knocked down too hard.”

Axel smirked. “That’s gonna come in handy.”

Jace nodded, but his expression was still unreadable. Like he was seeing something deeper.

“You’re evolving faster than expected,” Jace said.

    Axel’s smirk faltered.

Because there was something unspoken in his tone.

    Something like concern.

    Testing the New Sound

Ryder cracked his knuckles. “Alright, enough standing around. If monkey-boy’s got new powers, I wanna see them.”

Axel grinned. “Alright, tough guy. Let’s go.”

They stepped into the sparring ring.

Brutus, Ryder’s massive Gorehound, let out a low growl as it prowled forward.

Tempo adjusted his grip on the guitar-axe. “Ready?”

Axel nodded. “Let’s make ‘em feel it.”

Tempo strummed a slow, dragging chord.

And the second the sound hit the air—everything changed.

    Axel felt lighter.

    Faster.

More in tune with the fight before it even started.

Ryder lunged, throwing a brutal punch aimed at Axel’s ribs—

    But Axel swayed, dodging effortlessly.

    It wasn’t just speed.

    It was anticipation.

    Flow.

    Ryder snarled. “No way—”

Brutus struck next, a shockwave of force, but Axel was already moving before the attack even landed.

    The battle had become music.

And he was playing with it.

    A Dangerous Realization

The fight ended in a draw, but only because Jace called it before Axel could push further.

    “You’re moving differently,” Jace said.

    Axel exhaled. “Yeah. Feels... smoother.”

Jace narrowed his eyes. “Too smooth.”

Axel frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Jace studied him for a long moment.

    Then, finally—

    “You’re not just evolving, Axel.”

    Axel’s stomach tightened.

    “You’re changing.”

And for the first time—Axel wondered if he was still in control of it.

Or if something else was pulling the strings.
