Chapter 26: Shadows Beneath the Surface

    A Whisper in the Code

Axel didn’t return to his dorm that night.

He sat in the Academy Archives, eyes locked on the screen, replaying O.R.I.O.N.’s words over and over in his mind.

"It is older than the tournament. Older than Helix.

    And it has found you."

    Something had targeted him.

    Something unknown.

And that terrified him more than Blackthorn ever could.

Tempo sat beside him, eerily quiet for once, fingers resting on the strings of his guitar-axe.

"You’re thinking too much," Tempo finally muttered.

Axel exhaled sharply. "Yeah, well, it''s kind of hard not to when some ancient force just scanned me like I’m a damn specimen."

Tempo’s golden eyes gleamed in the dim light. “Then maybe it’s time to stop thinking.”

Axel frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Tempo’s tail flicked. “It means we find out who’s watching. Before they decide to do more than just look.”

And just like that—Axel realized he wasn’t going to get any sleep tonight.

Training in the Wake of the Unknown

Morning came faster than Axel wanted.

His body felt sluggish, his mind still cycling through the events of the night before.

    But none of that mattered.

    Because today?

    They were training.

And if Blackthorn had spies? If something else had marked him?

Then he had to be stronger than ever.

The Apex Training Facility was already buzzing when he arrived. The eleven other tournament fighters were scattered across different battle zones, locked in various training routines.

Jace was sparring against three combat drones at once, Stratos weaving through the air like a living lightning strike.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Sienna was working on predictive counter-strategies, her Mirror Serpent flickering between illusions as her AI assistant analyzed patterns.

    And Valeria—

    Valeria was watching him.

Axel felt her gaze before he even turned to look.

She stood near the observation balcony, arms crossed, smirking.

    Like she knew something.

    Axel exhaled. Not today.

He focused on the sparring rings—where Ryder was standing, waving him over.

“Oi! Mercer! You look like death, man.”

Axel forced a smirk. “Yeah, well, I’ve been contemplating the meaning of life.”

Ryder snorted. “Well, lucky for you, I’ve got the perfect cure—violence.”

Axel rolled his shoulders. “Sounds therapeutic.”

Ryder cracked his knuckles. “You have no idea.”

    A Battle of Instincts

The moment the fight began, Axel felt the change.

The Adaptive Resonance was kicking in faster.

Each movement, each exchange—he wasn’t just reacting.

    He was anticipating.

Ryder’s Gorehound, Brutus, lunged first—a massive blur of muscle and armor.

Tempo moved without hesitation, matching its aggression with speed. His guitar-axe hummed, releasing a shockwave that sent Brutus skidding.

Ryder grinned. “Oh, we’re doing this now?”

Axel grinned back. “You wanted a fight.”

    Ryder charged.

    And that’s when Axel realized—

He wasn’t just learning from the fight.

He was adapting in real time.

Every subtle shift in Ryder’s movement, every micro-adjustment Brutus made—Axel was processing it faster than ever before.

He sidestepped an incoming punch before Ryder even finished throwing it.

Countered before Ryder even realized he was open.

    Ryder’s eyes widened. “The hell—?”

    Axel grinned. “Keeping up?”

Ryder chuckled darkly. “You’re getting dangerous, man.”

Brutus snarled, shifting his stance—learning, adjusting.

Tempo grinned. “Two can play that game.”

The sparring continued—each clash faster, sharper.

And with every second, Axel felt his mind sharpening.

Like he was on the edge of something more.

    Valeria’s Warning

After the match, Axel grabbed a towel, wiping sweat from his face.

Ryder was laughing between breaths. “You’re turning into a freak, man.”

    Axel smirked. “Good.”

As he turned toward the exit, he felt it again.

    Eyes on him.

    But this time—closer.

Valeria was waiting near the hallway, leaning against the wall with her usual smirk.

Axel sighed. “You’re doing the creepy watching thing again.”

Valeria tilted her head. “Hard to look away when someone starts breaking the rules of combat.”

Axel frowned. “What are you talking about?”

She stepped closer. “I saw your fight. You weren’t just reacting—you were reading the future.”

    Axel tensed. “That’s not—”

    Valeria’s crimson eyes gleamed.

    “You’re evolving, Mercer.”

The way she said it—like she knew something even he didn’t.

Axel narrowed his eyes. “And you care why?”

Valeria smiled. “Because I like watching rare things.”

Then—she leaned in, her voice dropping to a near whisper.

“And because the things watching you? They like rare things too.”

    Axel’s breath hitched.

Valeria’s Abyssal Wraith, Nocturne, flickered into view beside her—a shifting shadow, its red eyes staring at him with something close to recognition.

And for the first time—Axel wondered if the thing watching him wasn’t just an enemy.

    But something far, far worse.

Something that had been waiting for him all along.
