Chapter 24: A Storm on the Horizon

    The Edge of Something New

Axel had never felt like this before.

His body hummed with a new energy, his mind moving faster than it ever had. Every movement, every step, every breath felt sharper, more precise. His new ability—Adaptive Resonance—was already working.

    It wasn’t just raw power.

    It was understanding.

With every battle, every exchange, his instincts refined.

    And that?

That meant the Axel Mercer everyone thought they knew was gone.

    Now, he was something new.

    Something more.

    But power like this?

It always came with a price.

    The Message

The next morning, Axel woke to a ping on his holo-band.

Meet me at the Obsidian Bridge. Now.

    —Jace

Axel sat up, rubbing his eyes. “Man, he doesn’t waste time.”

Tempo, curled at the foot of the bed, yawned. “Stroud is obsessed with pushing himself. And now, he’s obsessed with pushing you.”

Axel smirked. “Sounds like a you problem.”

Tempo flicked a small spark of energy at his face.

    Axel yelped. “Dude!”

Tempo grinned. “We leave in five.”

    Axel groaned.

    The Obsidian Bridge

The Obsidian Bridge was one of Helix Academy’s most infamous training locations.

A massive black stone structure, suspended above an underground ravine. The bridge itself was wide enough for large-scale battles, but its real purpose?

    Pressure training.

Because if you got knocked off…

    Well.

There were safety barriers, but you’d still fall for a solid minute before getting teleported back. Embarrassing as hell.

Axel arrived to find Jace already waiting, arms crossed.

Stratos loomed behind him, wings folded neatly, electricity crackling along its scales.

Sienna was there too, sitting on a nearby railing, watching.

Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.

Axel raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t know this was a group event.”

Sienna smirked. “I like to watch interesting fights.”

    Axel sighed. “Great. No pressure.”

Jace stepped forward. “We don’t have time for games.” His blue eyes locked onto Axel’s.

“I need to know exactly how strong you’ve gotten.”

    Axel grinned. “Why? Getting nervous?”

Jace didn’t smile. “I need to know if I can rely on you.”

    Axel’s grin faltered.

    That…

    That wasn’t what he expected.

    Jace wasn’t just testing him.

    He was trusting him.

Axel exhaled, stretching out his arms. “Alright, Stroud. Let’s do this.”

Jace nodded. “First one to fall loses.”

Axel smirked. “Try to keep up.”

    The Battle Begins

    Jace moved like lightning.

One second he was standing still—

The next, he was on Axel.

A burst of electricity surged forward as Stratos launched an aerial strike, forcing Axel into immediate evasive maneuvers.

Tempo leapt from his shoulder, strumming his guitar-axe mid-air. The vibrations warped the air, canceling out the worst of the incoming lightning.

Axel twisted, barely dodging Jace’s opening strike.

    But—

    Jace wasn’t done.

He followed through instantly, shifting his momentum into a rapid second attack.

Axel barely blocked, their forearms colliding with a shockwave of force.

    “Faster,” Jace said, eyes sharp.

    Axel gritted his teeth.

    Adaptive Resonance kicked in.

    Jace’s movements—his footwork, his attack patterns—became clearer.

    Predictable.

Axel saw the next hit coming.

    And this time?

    He countered.

Jace’s expression flickered with surprise as Axel dodged cleanly, twisting behind him in a blur.

Tempo followed up instantly, slamming the guitar-axe into the ground, sending out a concussive soundwave.

Jace and Stratos were forced back.

Sienna, watching from the railing, let out a soft hum.

    “Interesting.”

    The Edge of Something Greater

    Jace exhaled, stepping back.

    “Your reaction speed has changed.”

Axel rolled his shoulders. “Something like that.”

    Jace studied him. Calculating.

    Then, softly—“You’re still holding back.”

    Axel blinked. “Huh?”

    Jace took another step forward.

“You haven’t figured it out yet, have you?”

    Axel frowned. “Figured what out?”

Jace’s eyes gleamed. “You’re not just adapting to me.”

    Axel’s stomach tightened.

Jace nodded. “You’re adapting to everything.”

    Axel’s breath hitched.

    That…

    That wasn’t normal.

His mind flashed back to the sparring match with Sienna, the battle with Jace, even the small fights before.

Every time, he had improved faster than he should have.

Every time, he had adjusted—not just to his opponent, but to the very concept of battle itself.

    Jace’s expression was unreadable.

“If you push this further,” he said, “you won’t just be learning faster.”

    “You’ll be evolving mid-fight.”

    Axel exhaled.

He didn’t know whether to be excited or terrified.

    A Dangerous Interest

As Axel left the Obsidian Bridge, his mind was still racing.

He barely noticed Valeria waiting for him.

She leaned against a nearby column, arms crossed, watching him with that same unreadable smirk.

Her Abyssal Wraith, Nocturne, flickered beside her, a creature of shifting darkness.

    Axel sighed. “You again.”

    Valeria chuckled. “Missed me already?”

Axel gave her a look. “What do you want?”

    Valeria stepped closer. “To talk.”

Axel did not trust that tone.

Valeria tilted her head. “You’re growing faster than you should be.”

    Axel stiffened.

    She knew.

    Of course she knew.

    Her red eyes glowed faintly.

    “You’re not normal, Mercer.”

Axel exhaled. “Tell me something I don’t know.”

    Valeria chuckled. “I like anomalies.”

    Axel swallowed.

That sounded way too much like a threat and a flirt at the same time.

    Tempo muttered, “You’re in danger.”

    Axel sighed. “I know.”

Valeria stepped past him, brushing his arm lightly.

    “I’m watching you, Mercer.”

Then, she vanished into the shadows.

    Axel exhaled sharply.

    Jace was right.

    He was changing.

    The only question now was—

Would he be able to control it?

Or was he turning into something far more dangerous?
