Chapter 15: The Calm Before the Storm

    A New Awareness

Axel had always known his bond with Tempo was different.

Most Cipher Users treated their partners as separate entities—powerful allies, but not extensions of themselves.

    But after Rook’s lesson?

    After unlocking Reflex Link?

    Everything felt… sharper.

As he walked through the academy grounds, he could sense Tempo in a way he hadn’t before. Not just through sight or sound—but through something deeper.

Tempo’s movements felt like his own.

Like they shared the same instincts, the same pulse.

    It was weird.

    And kind of awesome.

    But mostly weird.

    Library Distractions

Axel hadn’t meant to end up in the Academy Library again.

He was supposed to be training, supposed to be preparing for the Apex Tournament selection.

But after the last few days of near-death experiences, he needed a break.

And, well—he still sucked at Cipher Theory.

    So here he was.

Unfortunately, Tempo was not built for quiet spaces.

Axel flipped through a holo-book, trying to make sense of Evolution Divergence Models, when he heard a loud thud.

    Then another.

    Then—

You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author.

    CRASH.

    Several students turned, glaring.

Axel slowly peeked over the book.

Tempo had somehow managed to get tangled in the suspension wires of a hovering bookshelf.

    His tail flailed uselessly.

Iris, sitting across from Axel, stifled a laugh.

Axel sighed, rubbing his temples. “Dude. Seriously?”

Tempo wiggled his eyebrows and made a dramatic whimpering noise.

Iris finally lost it, giggling into her sleeve.

    Axel blinked.

    That… was new.

He’d seen Iris smile before. But this?

    This was different.

    She looked genuinely happy.

For some reason, that made Axel’s chest feel weirdly warm.

Tempo finally managed to free himself, falling directly onto Axel’s head.

    Iris laughed again.

    Axel groaned. “You’re the worst.”

    Tempo grinned proudly.

    The Unspoken Conversation

They kept studying, though Axel wasn’t sure how much actual learning was happening.

Eventually, Iris set her holo-tablet down, fiddling with the edge of her sleeve.

“You’ve been training a lot lately,” she said, voice softer than usual.

Axel shrugged. “Yeah. Gotta keep up if I don’t wanna get wrecked.”

She hesitated. “You’re going to be in the tournament, aren’t you?”

    Axel blinked.

She wasn’t asking like the other students.

She wasn’t saying it like a challenge, or a joke.

    She already knew.

    Axel exhaled. “Probably.”

Iris studied him. “Are you scared?”

    That caught him off guard.

Jace would’ve called him reckless. Ryder would’ve said hell yeah, bring it on. Rook would’ve laughed and told him he better be.

    But Iris?

She was asking like she actually cared.

    Axel hesitated.

    “…A little.”

    Iris nodded, like she understood.

    Then, softly—“Good.”

    Axel blinked. “Wait, what?”

Iris smiled faintly. “It means you know what’s at stake.” She looked down at her hands. “Blackthorn isn’t playing fair. They never do. If you weren’t at least a little afraid… I’d be worried.”

    Axel stared at her.

Most people just assumed he was the reckless idiot who threw himself into fights without thinking.

    Iris saw through it.

The realization made his brain feel weird.

Or maybe that was just Tempo wiggling his eyebrows again.

Axel flicked his forehead. “Knock it off.”

    Iris giggled.

    And yeah.

    Axel was definitely feeling something.

    A Moment at Sunset

They left the library as the sun was setting, the academy skyline glowing in gold and crimson hues.

Iris stretched, yawning. “I think that’s enough theory for today.”

    Axel smirked. “Agreed.”

They walked in comfortable silence, the distant hum of training drills and sparring matches filling the air.

    Iris hesitated before speaking again.

“…If you need help before the tournament, let me know.”

Axel raised an eyebrow. “You offering to tutor me again?”

    Iris smiled. “Maybe.”

Axel grinned. “Careful. I might actually take you up on that.”

    Iris flushed slightly.

And for the first time, Axel realized—

He wanted to see that expression again.
