The Shadows Invitation

    Chapter 12: The Shadow’s Invitation

    The Unease Before the Storm

    Something felt wrong.

Axel had been trying to ignore it—tried telling himself that after the emergency meeting, after the revelations about Blackthorn’s return, his paranoia was justified.

    But this?

    This was different.

The academy halls were too quiet. The usual competitive energy—the rivalry, the casual arrogance of Helix students—had been replaced with something else.

    Something heavier.

As Axel made his way toward the combat training sector, he noticed the way people were whispering.

    Not about school rankings.

    Not about Jace.

Not about his fight in the training grounds.

    Something new.

    Something worse.

And then he saw the security lockdown.

    The Intruder

A section of the academy had been sealed off—barriers raised, guards positioned at every entrance. The Grand Hall—usually reserved for official announcements—was surrounded by faculty members, their expressions grim.

Axel felt a prickle of unease.

He wasn’t the only one watching.

Jace stood nearby, arms crossed, his face unreadable. Other top students—Sienna, Ryder, even a few seniors—had gathered in the shadows of the upper walkways, waiting for the inevitable.

    Something big was happening.

    Then, the doors opened.

    And the intruder walked in.

    The Messenger from Blackthorn

    The man wasn’t a student.

He was tall, wrapped in a sleek black combat coat lined with faint crimson circuitry, a uniform unlike anything Helix students wore. His boots made no sound as he stepped forward, moving with the kind of predatory grace that came from years of training.

A Cipher Beast followed at his side—a wolf-like creature, its fur black as midnight, eyes glowing a sickly yellow.

    It didn’t walk.

    It stalked.

    Tension coiled in the room.

Axel had never seen an entire faculty body this tense before.

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

The man stopped at the center of the Grand Hall. His smile was polite. Amused, even.

Like he was walking into a room full of prey.

“Ladies and gentlemen of Helix Academy,” he said smoothly, voice echoing through the vast chamber.

    “I come bearing a message.”

    The Challenge

Professor Aldren stepped forward, his face unreadable. “State your name and purpose.”

    The man chuckled. “So formal.”

    Then, with a mocking bow—

“Lucian Kael. Senior Instructor, Blackthorn Institute.”

    Murmurs rippled through the room.

    Axel’s stomach tightened.

He wasn’t just some grunt from Blackthorn.

    He was a teacher.

Aldren’s eyes hardened. “Your academy has no authority here.”

Lucian tilted his head. “Perhaps. But we do have an invitation.”

He flicked his wrist, activating a holographic display.

An image filled the air—a massive, circular arena, jagged metal structures rising from the ground, the walls pulsing with dark energy.

    Axel didn’t recognize it.

    But Jace did.

    His jaw tightened.

    Lucian smiled.

    “The Apex Tournament.”

    Silence.

    Lucian took a step forward.

“Helix prides itself on being the strongest, the elite of the Cipher World.” He glanced around, amused. “Yet… I see weakness here. Rust. Arrogance.”

His wolf-like Cipher Beast let out a low, guttural growl.

“We at Blackthorn have always known the truth,” Lucian continued. “Strength isn’t inherited. It’s taken. It’s forged through battle.”

His gaze swept across the assembled students.

    “So let’s settle this.”

    The Rules of War

    Lucian’s voice carried effortlessly.

“The Apex Tournament. Twelve of your best against twelve of ours. No rules. No restrictions. A battle to prove, once and for all, which academy stands at the top.”

A heavy silence settled over the room.

    Axel felt his pulse quicken.

    This wasn’t just a competition.

This was a declaration of war.

    Lucian smirked.

“You may decline, of course.” He shrugged. “Walk away, and the world will see Helix for what it is—a dying relic. A school that fears the future.”

He spread his arms. “Or… you can fight.”

    His eyes locked onto Jace.

    Onto Axel.

    And very softly—like a challenge—

"I do hope you won’t disappoint us."

    Tension Breaks

The moment Lucian finished speaking, the entire hall erupted.

Shouts. Questions. A dozen voices demanding answers.

“This is a trap!” one student snarled.

“Why should we fight them on their terms?!”

    “This is insane!”

Professor Aldren raised a hand, silencing the room. His eyes remained locked on Lucian, assessing, calculating.

“This will be discussed among faculty,” Aldren said coolly. “If we choose to respond, we will do so on our terms.”

    Lucian simply smiled.

“Of course.” He turned, heading for the exit. “I’ll expect your answer soon.”

As he walked past, his gaze briefly flickered to Axel.

    Not Jace.

    Not the top-ranked fighters.

    Axel.

And in that single glance, Axel understood.

    Blackthorn wasn’t just challenging Helix.

    They were watching him.

    Aftermath

The moment Lucian left, chaos erupted again.

Jace exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. “Damn it.”

Axel turned to him. “What do you know?”

Jace’s expression was unreadable. “That arena? It’s real. It’s in the Ruined Zones. Blackthorn’s personal proving ground.”

Ryder cursed. “So if we accept this, we’re walking into their turf?”

Jace nodded. “And they know it.”

    Axel exhaled.

    This was happening.

    The only question now was…

Would he be one of the twelve?

    The Whisper in the Dark

That night, Axel returned to the archives.

O.R.I.O.N. was already active, the screen flickering softly.

    “So. They’ve made their move.”

Axel leaned forward. “What’s Blackthorn’s real goal here?”

The AI was silent for a moment.

    Then, quietly—

    “They don’t care about winning.”

Axel frowned. “Then what do they want?”

    The answer came slowly.

    “To break you.”

    Axel’s stomach tightened.

    This wasn’t just a battle.

    This was something worse.

And he wasn’t sure he was ready.
