Chapter 1: Offbeat Beginnings
<hr>
Welcome to Helix Academy
The first thing they tell you when you enter Helix Academy is that your Cipher Beast defines your future.
They say it shapes who you become—your fighting style, your career, your worth. The strongest Cipher Beasts belong to the elite, the ones destined for power, influence, and a life of prestige. The weakest? They’re deadweight.
And if you were bonded to a weak one?
Well. You might as well not exist.
Axel Mercer adjusted his jacket, trying to ignore the sheer weight of the moment pressing down on him. Around him, the massive Induction Hall of Helix Academy buzzed with anticipation—rows upon rows of first-year students standing beneath holographic banners, all waiting for the most important event of their lives: Cipher Awakening Day.
This was it. This was the moment where everything changed.
He clenched his fists. Please. Just let me get something good.
Across the hall, towering statues of legendary Cipher Beasts loomed overhead—monuments to the academy’s greatest graduates. There was Stormfang, the Cyberwolf; Aetheris, the Plasma Phoenix; and, of course, Titanus, the War Golem.
Axel had spent his whole life dreaming about standing among them.
Now? He was one name away from finding out if his dreams were worth anything at all.

The Strong, The Elite, and the Nobodies
Axel had one main rule in life: Never let ‘em see you nervous.
Didn’t matter if you were up against a corporate suit, a street gang, or a room full of genetic elites—confidence was key. And right now, he needed to fake it like his life depended on it.
Because it kinda did.
"Mercer, you look like you’re about to throw up," a voice drawled behind him.
Axel turned to see Ryder Voss, one of the few students who wasn’t a rich, trust-fund kid. He had the look of someone who’d spent too much time in underground race circuits—messy blond hair, a sleeveless combat vest, and a permanent smirk that said he either had a plan or was about to start some trouble.
Axel exhaled sharply. "Nah. Just mentally preparing for my inevitable rise to legendary status.”
Ryder snorted. "Yeah? Lemme guess—you’re hoping for a dragon?"
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
"Damn right. Or something close. Just not—" Axel hesitated, searching for the right words. "Not a dud."
They both turned as the next name was called.
"Leon Greaves, step forward."
Across the room, Leon—a top-tier noble from a military family—strode up to the Bonding Platform like he already knew he was going to win. The second he placed his hands on the glowing pedestal, a brilliant surge of energy exploded outward.
Axel squinted as a massive, serpentine figure materialized in front of Leon. Its body pulsed with radiant blue scales, electricity crackling between its fangs.
The screen above them flared to life:
<blockquote>
Cipher Beast Bonded: Zephyros, the Thunder Wyrm.
</blockquote>
A collective murmur of approval swept through the hall.
Leon smiled—smug, satisfied, untouchable.
Axel scowled. Great. Another rich kid with a god-tier monster.
This was how it always went. The strong got stronger. The elites stayed on top. The rest? They got what they were given and learned to live with it.
And then, the moment arrived.
<blockquote>
“Axel Mercer, step forward.”

The Bonding Ritual
Axel walked toward the Bonding Platform, feeling like the air itself had thickened around him. His heartbeat thudded in his ears as he stepped onto the platform, placing his hands on the glowing pedestal.
Instantly, a deep hum vibrated through his bones, the same sensation as standing near a massive speaker just before a bass drop.
A voice echoed through the hall:
<blockquote>
“Cipher Beast Synchronization: Initiated.”
“Scanning Genetic Signature… Bonding…”
</blockquote>
Light exploded outward.
For a second, Axel’s vision was filled with pure energy, bright and overwhelming.
This was it.
This was the moment that would define his future—
—And then the light flickered.
It glitched.
And instead of a majestic, powerful beast, a small, furry creature popped into existence in front of him.
Axel’s stomach dropped.
The thing was tiny.
A small monkey-like creature, no bigger than a basketball, covered in electric-blue fur. It had huge, curious eyes, a long prehensile tail, and… was it… drumming on the floor?
The entire room went dead silent.
And then someone laughed.
"No way," a voice jeered from the crowd. "He got a freakin’ petting zoo reject!"
The laughter spread like wildfire.
Axel’s eye twitched.

Meet Tempo
The tiny monkey-thing blinked, staring up at Axel.
Then, with zero warning, it leaped onto his shoulder, wrapped its tail around his arm, and—
BAM BAM BAM—drummed on his head.
Axel flinched. "HEY! QUIT IT!"
The creature grinned.
<blockquote>
"Heh-heh-HEH!"
</blockquote>
Then, still clinging to Axel’s arm, it flipped upside down, wiggling its fingers like a miniature rock star about to drop a solo.
Above them, the holographic screen displayed:
<blockquote>
Cipher Beast Bonded: Tempo, the Primal Virtuoso.
</blockquote>
Axel’s soul died a little.
"What… the actual hell?" he muttered.
Jace Stroud—the golden boy himself—let out a dramatic whistle.
"Wow. That''s rough, Mercer." He grinned. "Guess you’re not making the elite class after all."
Axel clenched his jaw, his mind screaming, This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening.
Tempo, meanwhile, seemed entirely unbothered. He flipped back upright, beatboxed, and then clapped his tiny hands like he expected an encore.
Axel dragged a hand down his face.
Oh. He was so screwed
