    Chapter 49 Busted

Calvin would be cruel to everyone when he became ruthless.

He gave her a cold stare and said with a nonchnt grunt, "Stop acting pathetic! I know that you

turned down the heat on purpose to make yourself sick. You think I''ll feel sorry for you now, don''t

    you? You wish!"

"Damn! He figured out my trick?" thought Jocelyn.

His piercing stare was fixed on her. Jocelyn avoided him rather than looking him in the eyes

because she knew she was guilty.

She had been up all night nning a trick, but he saw right through it in a single sweep. Jocelyn

was enraged because she had never met a more cunning and clever man than Calvin.

    "Stop acting! Get up!"

Calvin then proceeded to the restroom.

Jocelyn had run out of options. She reasoned that since Calvin wasn''t showing her affection, she

could seekfort from her two children.

Jocelyn rose from the couch and walked groggily to the kids'' room, her hand resting on her brow.

Jocelyn walked right in after opening the door.

The sound of the door opening jolted Jeffrey awake. He got out of bed when he looked up and saw

    it was Jocelyning.

"Mommy!" Jeffrey yelled, rubbing his sleepy eyes.

    "My dear Geoffrey!"

Like a wandering soul, Jocelyn entered the room and sat down on the couch.

Jeffrey realized there was something wrong with Jocelyn. "Mommy, are you okay?" he asked,

    running up to her barefoot.

    "My head aches!"

Jeffrey reached out his tiny hand and ced it on her forehead as if checking for a fever. Then he

yelled, "Ah! Mommy, your brow is scorching! You''ve got a fever!"

    "That''s right."

"Don''t worry, mommy. I''ll take care of you! You can lie down in my bed."

Tammy also awoke. She jumped out of bed, ran over to Jocelyn, and asked, "What''s the matter,

    Mommy? Are you all right?"

"Well, I might have a fever."

"Your head is so hot! Here, please lie down on my bed. You should get some rest."

Tammy touched Jocelyn''s hot forehead before bolting out of the room, hoping that Calvin would look

    after her mother.

Jocelyn was ovee with emotion that she was almost on the verge of tears. She pondered, "My

children are the only people who truly care about me! Everyone else appears to be untrustworthy,

especially my husband Calvin. He doesn''t give a damn about me!"

Tammy didn''t find Calvin in his bedroom, so she returned downstairs.

Tammy noticed Calvin and Beatrice in the first-floor dining room. She dashed up to them and yelled,

    "Oh, Mr. Austin! Grandma Beatrice!"

    "What''s the matter, Tammy?"

Beatrice was surprised to see Tammy still in her pajamas. The two kids would typically get up and

ready for the day on their own, which was why Beatrice found Tammy''s reaction so peculiar.

"Grandma Beatrice! My mommy has a fever. Pleasee and see her!"

In a panic, Tammy grabbed Beatrice''s hand and tried to lead her upstairs.

"Your mommy has a fever?" Beatrice asked, surprised.

"Does Jocelyn have a fever?" she asked Calvin, who was eating his breakfast elegantly.

"Yeah," Calvin replied without any expression on his face.

Beatrice couldn''t help but be irritated: Calvin''s wife was ill, but he was sitting there alone,

    eating like a king.

Beatrice had just asked him for Jocelyn''s absence from breakfast, to which he replied that she

    would arrive shortly.

On the other hand, Tammy showed up to break the news that Jocelyn wasn''t feeling well.

Beatrice interpreted this as an indication that her son was not yet as dependable as a child.

"What do you mean by that? You should check on Jocelyn to see how she''s doing. Why don''t you

ask her about her condition and if she needs a doctor?" Beatrice asked anxiously.

Calvin happened to finish his breakfast at this time. He left the table after raising his hand to check

    his watch.

He said to Beatrice, "I have to get to work, Mom. The meeting I have in the morning is crucial to the

company. If you are worried about Jocelyn, you should have Shamare by and check on her."

He walked away from the situation as if he had nothing to do with it.

Beatrice yelled in anger, "Stop right there, Calvin!"

Calvin turned around to look back as he retraced his steps. "What''s wrong, Mom?" he asked,

    puzzled.

"I have no idea what you''re thinking. Do you want to go to work when your wife is sick? If you lose

her, the money you earn will be useless! You should listen to me and go upstairs right now to take

care of your wife! Don''t leave the house until she''s healed!"

Beatrice gave Calvin orders. In her mind, she questioned, "What a nerd! What exactly do I need to

do to make his marriage work?"

    "Mom!"

Calvin felt a mental breakdowning on. He knew what Jocelyn was thinking too well: all she had

done was make him feel pity for her.

She had pretended to be ill, but he had to stay and care for her.

He swore he would prove to everyone that she was a liar!

"The truth is, Mom, Jocelyn is perfectly healthy. She''s just acting sick to get attention."

Calvin wished he could tell his mother to ignore Jocelyn because she mighte downstairs for

    breakfastter.

But before he could continue, Tammy interrupted, "No! My mother is really having a fever. Her

    forehead is hot like fire."

Tammy said this to prove her mother''s innocence.

Beatrice said, "Did you hear what Tammy said, Calvin? Jocelyn wasn''t lying! You should go see her

anyway! I''ll jump off this hill if you go to work today!"

Shock swept over Calvin. He had no idea his mother would go to such lengths to get him to do what

    she said.

Calvin began to feel profound regret for having asked Jocelyn to marry him.

He realized he had gotten himself into a lot of trouble.

Seeing that Calvin was still there, Tammy ran over to him and said, "Daddy,e on! Go see

    Mom!"

Calvin was forced to go back upstairs.

Jocelyn was lying in bed in the kids'' room. She appeared to have a fever, with her face flushed and

    her eyes closed tightly.

"Daddy,e and feel Mommy''s forehead! Isn''t it hot?"

Tammy took Calvin''s hand in hers and ced it on Jocelyn''s brow.

When Calvin turned around, he noticed Beatrice staring at him. He feltpelled to approach

Jocelyn''s bed and ce a hand on her head.

He could feel the warmth radiating from her head when his hand touched it. He could only assume

at this point that she had a fever.

"You have a fever. I''m calling Shamar right now."

Calvin quickly dialed Shamar''s number and left the room after the call.

Beatrice stopped him and asked, "Where are you going?"

"I''m going to get the thermometer from my room."

Calvin exined, in case his mother would think he was running away.
