What to expect: LGBTQIA+ themes (that start to show up around chapter thirty). If you don’t like it, then please leave. Thank you. A superhero story with powersReligious themesThemes on DiscriminationMental Illnesses Neurodivergence Attempted humor (I tried)Identity Shenanigans This story for me is pure indulgence. I just wanted to have fun while also discussing some heavy themes. I was inspired by Spider-Man, BBC Merlin, PJO series, Blue Exorcist and probably a lot more that I was unconsciously inspired by. If you like those, you might like this. Warnings:-allusions to suicide, attempted suicide -violence, blood -Self-harm -Adult languageIn a world where breathing air without masks can permanently change you— whether that be stone-cold dead or into a hero with powers— Cain, a 19-year-old superhero fanboy lives with his superpowered mother and brother. Cain is a lot of things, but for the most part, he is completely friendless, quite frankly a loser, has no ambitions, and can only dream of being like his mom and brother. His brother can be like his favorite heroes while Cain can only clean coffee stains. It’s not like he’s jealous though. That’s ridiculous. He’s very much content living his everyday life as he is… Probably. One day, on his way home, Cain encounters a monster he had only heard of. The creature has the power to drain humans and in turn, break their magical masks that keep them from breathing in the poisonous air. Cain’s mask breaks and he ends up exposed. He will either die instantly or become a hero… right?Well, there’s one more thing that can happen to a person when exposed to the poison. ‘Demons’ -- the thing humans can, very rarely, become. Their features change, becoming monstrous. Their sanity wanes and they go into frenzies, killing all who are nearby. And worst of all, their very touch becomes deadly. They aren’t even human anymore. That’s what everyone says happens to those who become a demon. Except… Cain doesn’t go into a frenzy. He doesn’t have any wish to kill at all, so what’s going on? Why, if demons are mindless monsters, then is Cain very much sane?He wants to find out, and also, along the way, see if a demon can become a hero just like all of his role models. He just needs to keep his demon-ness a secret… but that can’t be hard. Updates every Thursday! Here's my linktree for all of the extra stuff I do with this story (playlists, art, tiktoks, deleted scenes) and ko-fi if anyone's interested in donating. It would help out a lot but no pressure.
