Chapter 83

    Chapter 83

Melvin heard Jocelyn’s phone chirp with the low-battery warning. Rarely did he act attentively before,

he plugged it in for her.

A Facebook notification popped up on the screen.

Melvin seldom pried into her personal apps. Aside from that one time he’d deleted Harrison’s

Facebook, this was the second time he’d touched her phone.

    But this message mentioned Willow

Just be patient. Willow has always been a bit of a mess. With a little more patience, she’ll crumble and

her reputation will be in tatters.] Jocelyn’s eyes narrowed at the sight of her phone in Melvin’s hand.

“Are you checking through my phone?”

“You’re nning revenge on Willow? Melvin’s gaze turned sharp as he caught sight of the previous

    photos

Jocelyn strode over, snatched the phone from his grip and saw the message from U.

Combined with the previous context, it was clear as day she was out to get Willow.

She did have once harbored such thoughts.

But then she figured Melvin’s indifference towards Willow was already the best revenge of all

The one who truly wants to take down Willow isn’t me, Jocelyn protested, not wanting to be falsely

used. “I did think about it, since Willow struck at me first. But I’ve given up now.”

“These messages are updatedtely. And you said it’s not you? Melvin squinted, skepticism in his

voice. “When did you start resorting to such low-level tactics?”

Jocelyn paused, a mix of shock and hurt on her face. “You don’t believe me?”

“Am I blind? Can’t I see the messages on your phone?” Melvin’s chilly stare bore into her “Is ruining

Willow’s reputation so important to you? When have you ever taken my words to heart? Does it really

    need to be this borate?”

Each question struck Jocelyn like a hammer blow.

She thought she was the one who should be asking the questions.

It was like the lead runner in a race suddenly tripped by someone from behind, both tumbling to the

ground. Yet before the fallen could ask why, the other was already using her of being in the way.

“Yeah, I never trusted you, Jocelyn admitted, too tired to exin herself to someone who already

    convinced of her guilt.

Seeing her acquiescence, Melvin’s disappointment was palpable. “I’m really surprised. I didn’t expect

you to be so petty. A little jealousy can be charming, but what you’re doing now was just

“Disgusting?” Jocelyn finished the sentence for him.

    Melvin’s frown deepened

Sinking further into despair, Jocelyn felt as though she was drowning, suffocating with the inability to

    breathe.

“Yeah, I find your ambiguous rtionship with Willow repulsive, and I hate the way how she clings to

you. So, I wanted to dig up dirt on her, see her beloved image crumble Ideally, it could make you detest

her, to cut her out of your life for good.”

Jocelyn’s tone was even, speaking as if stating a simple fact.

    Melvin’s gaze grew darker.

For the first time in over three years, Jocelyn saw disgust in his eyes

Suddenly, it felt like all those years they spent together had been a waste

“Is there anything else you want to say?” Jocelyn’s voice was light.

Melvin, now sitting on her bed, was caught in an awkward limbo, not sure whether to stay or go.

“Regardless, these past years with you were mostly good. I wish you all the best moving forward

Jocelyn knew their rtionship really ended this time.

She was done clinging to a man who had never fullymitted to her.

Even a stray dog you care for over three years would grow loyalty and affection.

Melvin wasn’t a dog. Certainly he was devoid of such feelings

go to my mom’s ce. You can take your time with your things to leave, Jocelyn offered him an out

This time, Melvin didn’t stop her.

Joselyn grabbed a set of clothes from the dresser and walked out without a tear or a sign of

heartbreak. The past struggles had built a foundation of strength, preventing her from crumbling now.

Instead of going home, Jocelyn checked into a nearby hotel for the night

The next day, she went straight to school.

Preston kept giving her strange looks throughout her lesson

And Jocelyn still ignored Preston’s inquisitive gaze even after ss

“Jocelyn, Preston called, following her out.

Jocelyn stopped and turned to him “What’s up?”

“My uncle came home in the middle of the night looking like a thundercloud,” Preston said, curious.

“Did you two have a quarrel?”

“No,” Jocelyn replied calmly. “We broke up. For real this time.”

Preston was stunned. He believed her words This time the couple didn’t seem to have a joke on this

    matter.

His uncle hadn’t raged when he got home, but he had drunk a fair amount. The whole house still

reeked of alcohol in the morning.

And Jocelyn’s demeanor was tooposed void of any drama.

    They were truly over.

Jocelyn’s gentle smile reassured Preston. “Don’t worry. Even if your uncle and I are done, I won’t hold it

    against you.”

What worried Preston wasn’t about himself though.

“Why did you break up? Was it because of Willow?”

Jocelyn shook her head. “Not entirely. If I must say, Willow was just thest straw. We’ve had problems

for a while, which just hadn’t erupted before. It’s better for us to separate so both of us won’t waste time

    anymore.”

    Preston didn’t quite understand.

To him, his uncle liked Jocelyn, and Jocelyn loved his uncle. Why split up if things were fine?

Aren’t people in love supposed to stay together?

“Alright, next ss is starting. Head back,” Jocelyn said with a smile “Mind your studies, okay?”

Preston watched Jocelyn’s retreating figure, scratching his head in bewilderment. From the first

moment he’did eyes on her, he’d thought she’d be the one to keep Uncle Melvin on his toes. She

had a soft and harmless look, yet she’d managed to leave his uncle hanging on more than one

    asion.

    Adult rtionships were indeedplicated.

It seemed that love wasn’t something the average people could easily grasp.

Jocelyn had her routine down to a science. She clocked out of her work each evening and headed

straight to her apartment On weekends, shed visit her parents, joining them for a hearty Sunday roast

and a bit of shopping. If not that, she’d round up a couple of pals for a day out All in all, her life was

    pretty cozy.

It had been a month since Jocelyn and Melvin hadst spoken to each other

asionally, she’d catch a glimpse of Willow on a TVmercial, or spot her name trending on

Twitter. The chatter was always the same: praising her dedication, her acting chops and her girl-next-

    door charm.

But the buzz these days was all about her recent sharing on a talk show where she’d dished about her

    first love

Back in her teens, she’d fallen for a guy who was the epitome of confidence and good looks. She’d

pursued him, relentless in her affections. He didn’t give her any chances at first, but her courage and

persistence won him overter. Before long, they became inseparable.

Those were the days filled with their sweet, naive hope for the future. She believed he’s the only one in

her life. Then something hard happened to his family, and she stood by him in his darkest days. It was

during that tough period that she truly realized how much he needed her. Later, determined to build a

better future for both of them, she made the bold decision to go abroad and join a talent training

    programme

As the story reached this point, the show’s host, driven by curiosity, asked about her current status with

    her first love

WBow Bashed a mysterious smile and the episode came to an end.
