Numberland is a surreal world where death is just a kind of tax, democracy is enforced by magic, and everyone is equal except in all the ways that matter.Wilson is the 49th person to arrive in Numberland, and every week brings new arrivals. Stranded with no way to get back to Earth, they will have to build a new society for themselves in this new environment. But it won鈥檛 be easy. The unexpected physics of Numberland will test their limits. Can they thrive in this strange new world without giving up the values of their old society?Follow along as Wilson gets lost, studies penguins, starts a small business, and tries to make a place for himself in the new civilization they鈥檙e building together. What to Expect:Numberland is a story about how people in groups of less than a hundred people organize themselves economically, socially, and politically. In a village so small that everyone knows everyone else, the people stranded in Numberland will find themselves reinventing old ways of doing things. Inspired by historical cultural traditions ranging from democratic longhouse villages of the Iroquois Confederacy to the client-patron relationships of Ancient Rome, get ready to see the incentives and power structures of a small society explored in excruciating detail.A detailed, rules-based magic system gives the world consistency. Each person in Numberland has a particular set of magical powers, some common and others unique. In some ways these powers are distributed fairly, in other ways they're profoundly unfair. Every character is intelligent in their own right, and every character works hard to get the most value out of their special abilities. The protagonist is just one person among many. Endowed with abilities that are good in some ways and limited in others, he'll have to use his creativity and social skills to get ahead in a world where everyone else is just as special as he is.Conflict is driven by genuine conflicts of interest and belief. This is not Lord of the Flies. In this world, you can expect every character to exhaust every means of resolving their differences peacefully; you can also expect that to fail when the differences are really irreconcilable. The economy of Numberland is rendered in detail, including plenty of numbers to justify the name. I've spent years of my life reading historical primary sources to get a feel for pre-industrial economics, and now I'm going to inflict it all on you. Despite the whimsical setting and magic-based economy, everything in Numberland is grounded in the cold, hard logic of pre-industrial agrarian economics.Updates Sundays.
