The woman could have sworn the ground was meant to be soft, but the ground was aggressively telling her that it was, in fact, the opposite. She didn’t know why she thought that, and as soon as she tried to chase that thought it fled completely, replaced by a curious absence of anything at all.


    It was black. She was on her back, as far as she could tell. Her thoughts felt fleeting, disjointed, although there was an undercurrent of something, a solidness to herself that grounded her.


    She didn’t know who she was.


    ‘But I am definitely me.’


    She opened her eyes.


    Rock and moss greeted her vision, and while she recognised both, she couldn’t recall ever seeing them before. She was in a cave, the tunnel extending downwards lit dimly by a deep blue light from behind her, the end curving into a permeating darkness.


    She got up and looked at her hands. They were scaled, tipped with black claws.The light struck her scales, a shifting pattern of deep red into purple into ocean blue, fading into black at its darkest. They were beautiful, and unmistakablly these were her hands.

    So why did she not remember them?


    She stood up, her body natural yet still disturbingly unfamiliar. Where was she, and who was she? The light was coming from a swirling blue wall behind her. The light shifted as the barrier did, showing distorted shapes on the other side, but it was opaque, and the deep blue light it cast seemed to create shadows.

    She got halfway through reading the words when she realised that she already knew what they said.

    A brief tinge of alarm, but more muted than she perhaps thought it ought to be. Odd. The seamless transition of words into her mind, felt distinctly unfamiliar, in a true way.
