Chapter 30

The suffocating weight of mana pressed against Sarah''s lungs, each breath a struggle. Panic, cold and sharp, clawed at her throat. "How do we stop the ritual?" she choked out, her voice barely a whisper against the oppressive hum of the cavern''s energy.

Leo''s usually calm demeanor was etched with grim urgency. "Think, he said you prevented him before. How did you do that?" His words were a lifeline, a desperate plea for her to dredge up some forgotten knowledge, some spark of understanding.

Sarah''s mind churned, a tempest of fear and bewilderment. "I... I don''t know," she confessed, her voice tight with a frustration that bordered on panic. "It''s not like I''ve been practicing my... Skills since arriving." The unspoken word, necromancy, hung heavy in the air, a class she wished she could disown. The secret she''d carried, a source of forbidden power, felt more like a leaden anchor, dragging her down in the face of a crisis she couldn''t comprehend.

"It doesn''t matter right now. We need to figure out what you did before," Leo insisted, his eyes unwavering. The air crackled with tension, the unspoken threat of imminent disaster hanging heavy between them.

Reluctantly, Sarah began to unravel the threads of her recent actions, each revelation a painful admission. "I... Resurrected two people. Sort of," she confessed, her voice barely audible. "But they were both at the same time and almost a week ago."

Leo''s expression hardened, a flicker of something akin to disgust crossing his features. Sarah braced herself for the inevitable condemnation, the accusation that would surely follow. "That... Wouldn''t be enough," he said, his voice flat. "The Cultist mentioned multiple failures. What else have you done?"

The accusatory tone stung, igniting a defensive fire within Sarah. "Nothing, that''s it..." she began, then paused, a flicker of memory surfacing. "Well, I brought them back again about fifteen minutes ago," she added, her voice laced with reluctant honesty.

Leo''s eyes sharpened. The disgust lessening at the revelation of the resurrected. "Ariel and Sebastian?" he asked, his voice clipped. He''d seen them, of course. He''d seen everyone. "What about Melissa?"

"She''s a human, like me," Sarah explained, "She turned up asking about employment and... Well, she''s in charge of the Wisdom trial now." The mention of the trials hung in the air, a reminder of the strange path she had found herself on.

The mana in the cavern was becoming unbearable, a thick, suffocating blanket. The air shimmered with raw energy, making it difficult to breathe, let alone think. They were running out of time, the ritual''s impending explosion a ticking time bomb threatening to obliterate the city if not for Melissa.

The mage''s silhouette, a fragile figure against the pulsing, unnatural light emanating from within her, trembled like a leaf in a storm. Rivulets of sweat, gleaming like liquid silver, traced paths down her flushed face, her red hair clinging to her like damp ribbons. Her lips moved, a silent prayer or a desperate incantation, but the words were lost in the escalating roar of the magic. The contrast between her and the raw, untamed power threatening to burst forth was terrifying.

"Honestly," Sarah said, her voice laced with desperation, "the only other thing I''ve done since I got here is die. Although, it''s almost been a week since my last death so that doesn''t fit the timeframe either... Is it the tower?" The sudden thought, born of a desperate need to find an answer, hung in the air.

"What is the tower?" Leo asked, his voice laced with suspicion.

"My home," Sarah explained, "I mean, the cottage next to the bank. It''s actually a tower that upgrades through... Souls of the deceased... Or something like that." She added, attempting to downplay the bizarre nature of her situation.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

Leo''s brow furrowed, his eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"

Sarah took a deep breath, steeling herself for the inevitable fallout. "I''ve been upgrading it all week, but I''m not entirely sure myself. I''ve only been on this planet for that long, so I''m still struggling to get my head around certain concepts." She decided to be fully honest. "I''m from a different planet. Earth."

The truth hung in the air, an unbelievable confession. She expected disbelief, ridicule, even anger. But Leo''s expression remained unchanged, his focus unwavering.

"That must be it!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with sudden understanding. "You''ve been upgrading the tower, which must have been preventing his ritual somehow." He seemed to have completely glossed over the "planet Earth" revelation. "Sarah, go upgrade the tower. Now!"

Sarah was stunned. The guard captain, a symbol of law and order, was instructing her to use the souls she had collected to upgrade her tower. The very act she had been trying to conceal was now demanded of her. It felt surreal, an odd twist of fate.

Alright. Let''s go!" she commanded, her voice sharp and decisive. "Hold on, Melissa. Final push!" Sarah wasn''t sure her words registered with the mage, her eyes determined, but there wasn''t time for reassurance.

They exploded from the guild house, a flash of frantic movement against the backdrop of the leisurely street. The city was a kaleidoscope of color and motion: vendors hawking wares, children chasing pigeons, laughter echoing from open doorways. And not a single one knew of the coming catastrophe.

Each step was a desperate scramble, weaving through the throng like a thread through a chaotic tapestry, until Leo''s roar cleared the air and a direct path forward. The sun, glinting off the city''s spires, seemed to mock their urgency, a silent observer of their frantic flight.

They reached the tower, its unassuming facade hiding its true nature. "Master!" Ariel greeted her, her eyes filled with relief.

"No time for hellos," Sarah said, her voice urgent. She opened the menu, the familiar interface appearing before her. The list of upgrades shimmered, each one a potential lifeline.

Without hesitation, she purchased every upgrade she could afford, the accumulated souls vanishing in a flash of light. The tower shuddered, a deep, resonant groan echoing through its structure.

With so many upgrades purchased at once, the tower''s power surged. Using her newly acquired skill, (Mana Sight), Sarah witnessed the tower''s energy field expanding, reaching out, and absorbing the raw mana that saturated the surrounding area.

The effect was immediate and dramatic. The mana, the very lifeblood of the city, was sucked into her tower, leaving a vacuum in its wake. The air thinned, becoming almost unbreathable. Outside, people collapsed, their bodies starved of the mana they relied on. Beneath the Ale for All guild, a weary mage collapsed at the same time as the ritual. It''s power absorbed into Sarah''s tower.

The silence was deafening, the absence of the mana''s hum creating an eerie stillness over Grower. Then, like a tide rushing in, the mana from the outer edges of the city surged back, filling the void. The city was bathed in a wave of raw energy, revitalizing the fallen and restoring the balance.

The crisis had passed, the ritual''s destructive power averted. No one knew what had happened, why the mana had vanished and returned, but they felt the shift, the subtle change in the city''s energy.

Sarah stood, her body trembling, her mind reeling from the events. She had saved the city, but at a cost. The tower, now significantly more powerful, pulsed with energy, a testament to the souls it had consumed.

Leo, his expression a mixture of relief and disbelief, turned to her. "You did it," he said, his voice filled with wonder. "It worked. You saved the city."

The weight of her actions settled upon Sarah, a heavy burden of responsibility. She had used her powers, her connection to the dead, to save the living. But the knowledge that she had done so by consuming souls, by feeding the tower, left a bitter taste in her mouth. It wasn''t the epitome if heroic, that was sure.

The awkward conversation loomed, the explanation of her powers, her origins, her very nature. How could she explain the inexplicable? How could she make Leo, a lion of order and reason, understand the chaotic reality she inhabited?

Yes, it wasn''t her fault, but she was slowly accepting what she was. What she''d become.

Sarah took a deep breath, steeling herself for the inevitable interrogation. "Leo," she began, her voice hesitant, "there''s some things we need to talk about..."

The words hung in the air, a promise of revelations, of secrets unveiled. The city, unaware of the drama that had unfolded beneath its streets, began to stir, its citizens slowly regaining their strength. Sarah, the Necromancer, stood at the center of it all, her fate intertwined with the fate of this strange and magical world.
