The protectors

The sun filtered weakly through the green-tinged sky as Alex stirred.

For a second, he thought the events of last night had been a dream—the underground library, the Archive’s voice, the words etched into Maya’s notebook.

Then he felt the weight of the book in his hands.

It was real. All of it.

He glanced around the room. Jason, Camilla, and Maya were still asleep, exhaustion written across their faces. The library had given them a place to rest, but no sleep could shake off the feeling that they were standing on the edge of something far bigger than themselves.

Alex sighed, running a hand through his hair.

    Then, the book trembled.

The same one that had written its own words the night before.

    Maya’s notebook.

Alex grabbed it, flipping to the last page that had been filled with writing. The ink had bled and smudged, but three words still stood out sharply.

"You were never meant to return."

    His stomach twisted.

    Something was wrong.

But before he could process it, the others started to wake.

“Time to wake up,” Alex said, his voice firm yet hesitant. He shook Jason first, then Camilla and Maya.

Jason groaned, rubbing his eyes. “What’s the rush? Can’t we sleep for another five minutes?”

“No,” Alex said, his tone sharp enough to cut through Jason’s usual humor. “You need to hear this. All of you.”

The weight in his voice made them all sit up.

As the group gathered, Alex recounted everything—the whispers, the Archive, the words that had appeared in Maya’s notebook. The three words that refused to leave his mind.

Maya grabbed the notebook from him, staring at the ink-stained page.

    “Who wrote this?” she whispered.

Alex shook his head. “I don’t know. But it wasn’t us.”

    A silence fell over them.

Camilla crossed her arms. “We need answers. And I think we’re sitting inside the only place that can give them to us.”

Alex nodded. “Then let’s find them.”

They stepped back into the main library.

The moment they entered, the air shifted. A hum vibrated through the walls, low and steady. The bookshelves creaked and twisted, moving on their own, reshaping the space as if sensing their arrival.

“The library,” Camilla whispered. “It’s changing.”

Books slid across the shelves, pages flipping wildly. The golden glow from the runes on the walls pulsed like a heartbeat.

    Then—

The book they saw last night hovered in mid-air, pages turning with a mind of its own.

Then, with a burst of light, the book projected an image into the air.

A glowing picture of the four of them.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

    Each holding a unique weapon.

Each surrounded by the same symbols etched into the floor.

Jason took a step back. “Uh. What.”

    The Archive spoke again.

"You have to fix rift before it opens completely ."

The words sent a chill down Alex’s spine.

Jason let out a nervous laugh. “Okay, yeah, no pressure.”

The voice continued, cryptic yet powerful:

"These symbols mark your bond, your roles, your strength. They are the key to restoring what was lost."

The image shifted, the symbols glowing brighter:

Alex’s Symbol: A blazing sun, its rays sharp like blades.

Maya’s Symbol: A quill, entwined with vines and flowers.

Jason’s Symbol: A storm cloud, jagged with lightning.

Camilla’s Symbol: A shield, radiant and unyielding.

Camilla frowned. “What do these mean?”

    The Archive answered:

"The sun wields the sword of light.

The quill shapes the fabric of reality.

The storm bends the forces of chaos.

The shield guards against the unrelenting dark.

    Together, you are balanced."

Maya swallowed. “Why us? Why did we get these symbols? These… weapons?”

Because you are bound to this place, and it to you. You created the Rift, and as its protectors, it is your duty to make the right choice before things go out of control."

The air in the room grew heavy.

Alex felt like something was missing, like the Archive wasn’t telling them everything.

The image shifted again—this time revealing a fractured world. The skies shrouded in green light, the lands broken into floating fragments. At the center was a glowing relic, pulsing with energy.

    “The relic,” Alex murmured.

    The Archive’s voice darkened.

"To wield the weapons, to restore balance, you must first find the relic.

It lies hidden where the first thread was severed.

Only then will the truth be revealed."

The glowing image faded, and the book settled back on the pedestal.

The library fell silent again, save for the faint crackling of unseen energy.

Jason exhaled. “So, to recap. We find the relic. Unlock our weapons. Save the world.”

Camilla crossed her arms. “And stop whatever is trying to break the Rift open.”

Maya ran a hand over her face. “And let’s not forget—someone, or something, doesn’t want us to remember our past.”

    Alex clenched his fists.

It wasn’t just about saving Maplewood anymore.

    This was bigger than that.

The Archive had told them enough to push them forward—

But not enough to tell them what they were really up against.

Alex closed his eyes, the weight of everything pressing down on him.

    Then—

A book flew off the shelf.

    Maya flinched. “What the—”

The book landed in the middle of the room.

    It was her notebook.

Jason frowned. “Did you drop that?”

Maya shook her head. “No. I left it—”

The pages flipped wildly on their own, faster and faster, until the ink inside bled together.

Then, in a slow, deliberate motion—

The book began to write by itself.

The four of them froze, staring as dark ink spilled across the page, forming words they did not recognize.

    Then—

    A single, clear line appeared.

    "This is where it began."

Maya’s hands shook as she reached for the notebook.

Alex took a step closer. “What does it mean?”

    Maya turned the page.

    More ink. More writing.

More of their past—appearing before their eyes.

    But as they read—

As the truth began to take shape—

The lights in the library flickered.

    And the Archive whispered—

"You were never meant to know."

    Then—the lights went out.
