Chapter 1

The headset went kaput, the virtual reality immersion dissolving into the harsh reality of Mark''s perpetually dim bedroom. A sigh escaped his lips, a testament to countless hours spent grinding in "Eldoria Online." Then, BAM! The world decided to throw a tantrum, warping and twisting like a cheap carnival funhouse. Mark landed on his rear, the familiar aroma of stale pizza and questionable energy drinks replaced by the pungent scent of damp earth and… was that moss?

He blinked, his eyes adjusting to the dim, emerald light filtering through a canopy of trees that looked like they''d been ripped straight from a fantasy art book. Towering, ridiculously oversized trees, mind you. And the sky? A swirling vortex of violet and… was that chartreuse? This was getting weird.

A guttural growl, like a goblin with a serious throat infection, shattered the tranquility. Two hulking, green-skinned figures lumbered out of the shadows, their eyes glowing like discount Halloween decorations. Goblins. Because, of course.

“Looks like we got ourselves a snack,” one grunted, its voice like gravel gargling with rusty nails.

Mark''s gamer instincts kicked in, but not the strategic, raid-leading kind. More like the "Oh, crap, I forgot to save!" kind. He wasn’t unarmed, though. His trusty, heavily customized mechanical keyboard, a testament to his dedication to online gaming, was somehow still strapped to his back. A weapon? Maybe. A cumbersome, very clicky weapon.

Before the goblins could close the distance, a blue screen popped into his vision, like a Windows error message from a fantasy dimension.

Mark stared, his brain short-circuiting. “Vanguard? Seriously? With a keyboard? Is this a joke? And why are my intelligence and wisdom so low? Did the system check my internet search history?”

The goblins, clearly unimpressed by his existential crisis, charged. Mark ripped his keyboard from his back. The first goblin swung its sword, a clumsy arc that telegraphed its intentions like a neon sign. Mark, channeling his inner barbarian, swung his keyboard like a battleaxe. The hefty device connected with the goblin’s head with a satisfying thwack, accompanied by the distinct click-clack of several keys.

    [Enemy Defeated! Experience Gained: 50]

    [Level Up!]

    [Level: 2]

    [Stat Points Available: 5]

The goblin crumpled to the ground, its eyes rolling back in its head. The second goblin, its eyes wide with terror, stammered, “You… you hit him with a… keyboard?”

“Yeah,” Mark replied, flexing his fingers. “You got a problem with that?”

He slammed his keyboard onto the ground, the resounding thump echoing through the forest. The goblin, clearly intimidated by the sheer absurdity of the situation, turned and fled, tripping over its own feet.

    [Enemy Fled! Experience Gained: 25]

[Loot Acquired: Rusty Sword, Crude Leather Pouch]

[System Notification: A Demon Portal has opened in the nearby village of Oakhaven. Time remaining until demonic invasion: 1 Hour. Also, your ISP has been notified of the portal. They are working on a fix. Please don''t unplug your router.]

Mark blinked. “My ISP? Seriously?” He checked his stats, dumped his points into strength and constitution, and equipped the crude leather pouch because… why not?

“Oakhaven,” he muttered, adjusting his keyboard strap. “Let’s go punch some demons with this bad boy.”

He followed the trail, his keyboard bouncing against his back, occasionally emitting random click-clacks. As he approached Oakhaven, the air grew thick with demonic dread. The sky, now a swirling vortex of purple and… puke green?… was split by a gaping portal, spewing forth demons with leathery wings and glowing eyes.

The villagers, armed with pitchforks and sheer terror, were being overrun. Mark charged, his keyboard held high.

“For the glory of… uh… clicking!” he yelled, channeling his inner raid leader.

He waded into the demonic horde, his keyboard a blur of motion. He bashed, smashed, and even occasionally typed, triggering random energy pulses that sent demons flying.

[Skill Acquired: Energy Pulse (Level 1)]

[Skill Acquired: Keyboard Smash (Level 2)]

"Eat keyboard!" He yelled as he smashed a demon across the face.

He saw a small child cornered by a particularly nasty-looking demon. He charged, yelling, "ALT-F4!" and slammed the keyboard on the demon''s head. The demon poofed out of existence.

“Get to safety, kid!” he yelled, handing the child to a bewildered villager.

He turned back to the demonic horde, his keyboard clicking with righteous fury. He was no longer just a middle-aged gamer. He was a Champion, a Vanguard, a keyboard-wielding hero destined to save this world from demonic invasion. And he would do it with the power of clicky keys and sheer, unadulterated absurdity.
