Chapter - 14 Ashes and Vengeance

The night was eerily silent after the collapse, the dust still thick in the air as if the earth itself was mourning. Ethan stood at the edge of the rubble, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles went white.  His home—their home—was buried beneath rock and steel. Dorian Kane had orchestrated this perfectly, played them like pieces on a board, and left them with nothing but wreckage and rage.

Rhea wiped the grime from her face, eyes scanning the ruins. “We should’ve known,” she muttered, voice edged with frustration. “Dorian doesn’t just take—he cripples.”

Jax exhaled hard, the loss weighing on his shoulders. “He didn’t even need the bunker. He just wanted us out of the picture.”

Maya shook her head. “He’s not done.”

Ethan turned to face them, his jaw set. “Neither are we.”

Felix adjusted his pistol holster, his usual smirk absent. “So what now?”

The weight of the question pressed down on them. The bunker had been more than walls and weapons. It had been security, a place they had carved out in a world trying to erase them. Now, it was dust.

    But dust settles.

Ethan took a step back from the wreckage, forcing himself to look forward. “We move. Regroup. Hunt him down before he does this again.”

Jax nodded. “I know a place. Not as secure as this, but it’ll work for now.”

Felix kicked at a piece of debris, sighing. “I assume we’re not taking the scenic route?”

Jax shook his head. “We need to move fast. If Dorian left any of his men alive, they’ll be tracking us.”

Lila shifted uneasily. “We’re not in any condition for another fight.”

Ethan glanced at the group—bruised, bleeding, and running on fumes. She wasn’t wrong, but they had no choice.

“Then we make sure the next fight is on **our** terms,” he said, voice steel.

    ---

They moved quickly through the night, keeping low and silent. Every shadow felt like an ambush waiting to spring, every gust of wind carried the phantom sound of approaching footsteps.

Ethan led the way, his senses heightened. He kept his steps light but purposeful, scanning the darkness for threats. Felix took the rear, occasionally glancing over his shoulder. They had made too much noise tonight—there was no way Dorian wouldn’t have someone tracking them.

After nearly an hour of cutting through the outskirts of the ruined district, Jax signaled them to stop near an old, half-buried structure. The entrance was hidden beneath the remains of a collapsed building. A tight squeeze, but once inside, it opened into a space just big enough for them to breathe.

Jax secured the entrance before flicking on a small flashlight. “This place used to be a supply cache,” he explained, moving toward a metal locker. “Not much left, but it’s better than nothing.”

Ethan sat against the wall, rolling his shoulders. Every muscle in his body screamed for rest, but he ignored it. “We need to get ahead of Dorian. Right now, we’re just reacting.”

Felix wiped the sweat from his forehead. “Got a plan, then?”

Ethan exhaled slowly. “Dorian didn’t just attack us—he sent a message. Which means he’s expecting a response.”

Lila frowned. “You want to give him one?”

Ethan nodded. “But on our terms. We don’t let him dictate the next move.”

Maya leaned forward. “We need intel. We need to know where he’s moving next.”

Jax unlocked the metal locker and pulled out a small radio. “If he’s planning something big, there’s chatter somewhere. We listen in, we intercept, we strike first.”

Ethan’s eyes darkened. “No more running.”

    ---

The next morning came with an uneasy stillness. Rest had been brief and restless, but they didn’t have time to waste. Felix and Maya worked the radio, scanning frequencies for anything useful. Static filled the air until finally, a faint voice crackled through.

“…Repeat, all units to Site Delta. Kane wants eyes on the perimeter.”

Felix raised an eyebrow. “Site Delta?”

Jax’s face darkened. “That’s a weapons facility. If Kane is moving there, he’s arming up.”

Ethan stood, his pulse quickening. “Then we hit him first.”

Rhea adjusted the strap on her shoulder. “That’s suicide.”

Maya narrowed her eyes. “You’re talking infiltration.”

She nodded. “If we can get inside, we disable his operation before it even begins.”

Jax rubbed his chin. “It’s risky.”

Ethan’s gaze was steady. “So shall we let Kane build his army?.”

Lila sighed, rubbing her temples. “Alright. What’s the plan?”

    ---

The sun was just beginning to set when they approached Site Delta. The facility was surrounded by towering fences, patrolled by armed guards moving in disciplined rotations. Dorian’s men were efficient, but not invincible.

Felix adjusted his stolen vest. “I feel like I should be honored. They got some good gear.”

Jax rolled his eyes. “Try not to act like you stole it.”

Ethan signaled for silence as they approached the back gate. Two guards stood watch, their attention fixed on the main road. A silent exchange of glances was all it took.

Rhea moved first, fast and lethal. The first guard dropped before he even had a chance to cry out. Ethan took care of the second with a swift, brutal efficiency. The bodies were hidden, and within seconds, they were inside.

The facility was vast, rows of crates and weapons lining the interior. Voices echoed through the corridors, men discussing shipments, patrols, and upcoming orders. They kept to the shadows, moving with precision.

Felix tapped Ethan’s arm, nodding toward a locked room. “Could be something useful in there.”

    Ethan nodded. “Let’s find out.”

Jax picked the lock in seconds, and they slipped inside. A row of monitors flickered before them, displaying blueprints, supply routes—everything they needed.

Lila whistled under her breath. “Looks like we hit the jackpot.”

Ethan scanned the screens, his stomach tightening. “Dorian’s planning something big.”

    Maya frowned. “How big?”

Ethan’s jaw clenched as he zoomed in on the maps. “Big enough to end this war.”

A sudden sound from the hallway made them freeze. Footsteps—several of them.

Felix’s eyes narrowed. “We’ve been made.”

Ethan drew his weapon, his voice quiet but firm. “Then we fight our way out.”

    The door burst open.

    Gunfire erupted.
