    Chapter 140 Divorced

“Sweetie, do you know how reluctant I am? Do you know how much I want to be a deserter? I don’t

want to go to the Town Hall with you. You wouldn’t believe it, but I told a ridiculous lie today just to

dy going to the Town Hall. Nancy, I regret it.”

Nichs’ heart was filled with regret.

But she wouldn’t give him another chance.

If only this meeting couldst forever.

If only she wouldn’t wake up, then he could stay by her side, quietly watching over her.

But, like all dreams, he eventually had to wake up.

Feeling someone beside her, Nancy opened her eyes. Upon seeing Nichs, she immediately sat up.

    “Is everything taken care of?”

    He wanted to say no.

However, he couldn’t continue with this lie.

“It’s almost done,” he uttered, struggling to get the words out.

Nancy rubbed her eyes, unconsciously checked the time, and realized it was a little after four in the

    afternoon.

It would be a little rushed, but they could make it as long as the roads were clear.

    “Give me a minute.”

Nancy went to the restroom and sshed water on her face.

When she came out, Nichs was leaning against a corner, his tall and imposing figure shrouded in a

thick cloud of smoke. The embers of the cigarette he was holding glowed recklessly.

“Let’s go,” Nancy said calmly as she walked over.

Seeing here out, Nichs took a deep breath and tossed the cigarette into the trash.

“Okay,” he replied, his voice tinged with bitterness.

In the car, both of them were very quiet, as if each had their own thoughts.

As Nancy opened the window, the gentle breeze made her hair dance in the wind.

She reached out, lightly flicking a stray strand of hair that the wind had tugged loose. Her eyes

appeared calm, but her heart had long been in turmoil.

When the traffic light turned red, Nichs reached into his cigarette case and took out a cigarette 18

then looked at Nancy, gesturing at it. “Mind if I smoke?”

Nancy shook her head. “Go ahead.”

In the past, she despised men who smoked.

That was because it was one of the few things that Felix loved to do, along with drinking and gambling.

He was so addicted to smoking that he sometimes went through several packs a day. The way he

    reeked of smoke was unpleasant.

But ever since she met Nichs and saw him smoke, she no longer found it as repulsive.

She didn’t exactly like it, but the way he smoked somehow appealed to her.

Nichs also leaned against the window. One of his hands rested on the window frame with his

slender fingers holding the cigarette, while his other hand was on the steering wheel. His natural grace

and charm still made him undeniably handsome.

As the red light seemed tost a while, the impatient honking of cars behind them filled the air.

After waiting for about ten minutes, Nancy grew a bit impatient and asked, “The traffic seems slow. Is

    there a traffic jam ahead?”

Nichs nced at the road conditions and replied, “It’s probably slow due to a car ident. Nancy,

    why don’t we-”

Before he could finish his sentence, the vehicle suddenly moved. It seemed like the road had cleared.

“Nichs, we can go now!” Nancy said, her soft, excited face showing pure joy.

    “Right.”

The rest of the journey was smooth. Even though Nichs deliberately drove slowly, they arrived

    before 5.00PM.

Since it was already after working hours, the lobby was nearly empty. There was barely anyone

    around.

Nancy walked up to the counter before she handed over all the documents and prepared materials to

    the staff.

The staff nced at them with surprise as they appeared to be a beautiful, perfectly matched couple.

He couldn’t fathom how the couple had reached the point of getting a divorce.

“Why are you getting a divorce?” the staff asked as part of his routine.

“Loss of affection,” Nancy replied calmly.

The staff briefly nced at Nichs, who, though handsome, remained silent and wore a calm

expression. He shook his head in resignation and turned his attention back to Nancy. “Once this

paperwork is processed, you two will no longer have a rtionship. Have you thought this through?”

Nancy had always believed she was very, very calm.

After all, this was what she had longed for.

    D

However, with everythingid out in front of her and the realization that there was no turning back, she

couldn’t help but feel a twinge of pain in her heart. The realization that they would bepletely

unrted upon receiving the certificate began to crawl gently at the core of her heart.

It wasn’t intense, but it left her feeling sour and ufortable throughout her chest.

Taking a deep breath, Nancy blinked and made up her mind. “We’ve both thought about it. Please help

    us with the paperwork.”

The staff turned his gaze to Nichs. “What about the husband? Do you agree to the divorce?”

Nichs’ deep gaze shifted, and he hesitated for ages before slowly speaking, the immense pain of

    separation weighing on his heart.

“We’ll do as she wishes. I have no objection.”

When these words reached Nancy’s ears, she felt utterly defeated.

    He agreed to it.

    He finally agreed to it.

This sentence marked the end of their marriage.

She thought she would be happy because this was what she had been waiting for all these days.

However, now that Nichs had finally agreed, she didn’t feel the joy she had imagined.

It turned out that she still had reservations and deep, profound unwillingness.

The next moment, after a stamp was affixed, the staff took back two red marriage certificates and

    handed them the certificates.

Nancy took one for herself and handed the other to Nichs.

    N?velDrama.Org (C) content.

“It’s useless; you take it. I don’t need it,” Nichs uttered, his tone light.

He felt deeply troubled. Just seeing this red document and thinking about the words ‘Divorce

Certificate’ on it made him extremely ufortable. He couldn’t bring himself to feel happy at all.

Nancy’s hand, which she had extended, suddenly stiffened, and then she slowly withdrew it.

He doesn’t even want the divorce certificate. To him, our marriage has truly been aplete disaster.

    Well, at least

    it’s a clean break.

    “I’ll go to the restroom.”

She endured until she reached the restroom. When she was washing her face with her hands cupping

the water, Nancy no longer needed to pretend. She cried unabashedly.

Tears mixed with droplets of water flowed silently down her cheeks.

She reached out and touched her chest.

Does it hurt? It wasn’t the relief she had imagined, but rather a painful, bloody ache.

    Can I let him go?

After ten years, they had be strangers at this very moment.

She had finally lost Nichspletely without leaving any room for herself to hold onto any lingering

    thoughts.

With the clear water in her hands, Nancy washed her face repeatedly, not stopping until her face was

tear-free and she had forgotten the feeling of crying.

She lifted her head and gazed at her reflection in the mirror. Desperately, she used her hand to form a

slight smile at the corner of her mouth and whispered to herself, “Smile, Nancy Cohen. You loved for

ten years, held on for seven years, and were married for two years. You couldn’t win his heart. It’s not

because you didn’t try hard enough. In fact, you’ve put in a lot of effort. Divorce might be the best

option. You can start a brand new life. Maybe you’ll meet someone who truly loves you in the future.”

Despite repeating these words to herself countless times, the pain in her heart remained

    uncontroble.

As she entered the lobby, Nancy’s face returned to its usual state, appearing calm as if nothing had

    happened.

Nichs was waiting for her by the door. When he saw her approaching, he automatically moved

    closer.

    “I’ll treat you to dinner.”

    “Let’s have dinner together!”

The two of them exchanged nces and almost simultaneously uttered those words.
