Chapter 1056 A Contradiction of the Heart

Luke''s gaze had been fixed on Sean as she left. Even after she had disappeared outside the door,

he remained entranced, not looking away.

Sydney patted him on the shoulder, bringing him back to his senses.

He turned his head back and touched the shoulder she had patted. "What''s wrong?"

"I was going to ask you the same thing," Sydney replied, crossing her arms and looking in the

direction of the door before fixing her gaze on him. "You were staring at Sean for so long. I called

out to you twice, and you didn''t even respond."

"Who said I was staring at her? I was just thinking about something," Luke retorted, somewhat

    agitated.

Sydney rolled her eyes. "Fine, fine. You weren''t. But let me tell you something. When youe

here in the future, you can''t be so mean to her. Sean is my secretary now, and it''s inappropriate for

    you to act like this."

As Sean''s current boss, Sydney had to protect her.

She couldn''t let Luke bully her secretary.

"Fine, fine." Luke pursed his lips and waved his hand dismissively. "I''ll just ignore her from now on,

okay? I didn''t think I was being mean anyway. Did you see her poker face just now? I haven''t even

comined about her attitude yet, and you''re ming me."

Sydney''s mouth twitched. "You''re being a bit unreasonable now. Isn''t Sean''s attitude towards you

the same as it always has been? Strict and rigid, with no change at all. Howe after she has

been with me for a few months, you can no longer ept it?"

Luke was stunned and found himself at a loss for words.

That was true. The way Sean greeted him was indeed the same as before.

And he had never thought there was anything wrong.

    ''What am I upset about?"

Luke dropped his eyes and felt an indescribable sense of irritation.

After a moment, he pulled out a chair and sat down before waving his hand again. "Never mind.

Let''s not talk about this. It''s annoying."

Sydney rolled her eyes at him again.

    Annoying?

Wasn''t it he who kept staring at Sean and thenined about her attitude afterward? Wasn''t it

also he who insisted on dwelling on it?

So why was he annoyed now?

Then again, Sydney always respected other people''s wishes. If Luke didn''t want to talk about it, so

    be it.

Just then, footsteps were hearding from the door.

An assistant appeared with a tray in her hands and knocked. "Ms. Raines, your coffee is here."

Sydney smiled and nodded. "Come in!"

The assistant responded and walked in with the tray. She ced two cups of coffee in front of

Sydney and Luke respectively before turning to leave.

Luke called out to her with a dark look in his eyes. "Wait."

The assistant stopped and turned to look at him. "Is there anything else you need, Mr. Chase?"

"Where is Sean?" Luke asked, turning the coffee cup in front of him. His tone was t.

Sydney looked at him across the table and waited to hear what he was going to say.

The assistant held the tray against her chest and thought of Sean''s instructions before replying,

"Ms. Tillman just received a phone call and had some work to take care of. She asked me to bring

    the coffee in."

Luke said nothing, thoughtfully gazing down at the cup.

    The room fell silent.

The assistant stood there, not knowing whether to leave or stay. In the end, she looked at Sydney

    for instructions.

Sydney rubbed her forehead. Luke''s behavior really gave her a headache.

"Luke..." she began, about to speak to defuse the tension.

Luke took a sip of his coffee and then mmed the cup down on the table.

The sound startled both Sydney and the assistant.

"Is she really busy or is she just making excuses not toe in herself? I don''t think I need to spell

out the answer, do I?" Luke looked at the assistant with flickering eyes.

The assistant opened her mouth as if to say something, but no words came out. She just lowered

    her head.

Feeling helpless about the situation, Sydney waved her hand at the assistant. "You can go now."

"Okay," the assistant replied, clearly relieved by Sydney''s words.

She quickly walked towards the door and left the office.

Sydney looked across the table at the unhappy man.

It was clear that he was not satisfied with the assistant''s departure, as he still had something to say.

"Luke," Sydney said tly, "I was the one who asked Sean to have someone else bring in the coffee,

so if you want to me anyone, me me."

Luke''s hand tightened slightly on his coffee cup. "Why did you do that?"

Sydney pinched her brow and exined helplessly, "Why? Haven''t you noticed that Sean is afraid

of you? I don''t know what happened between you two to scare her, but as her boss, I have to

protect her. If she feels ufortable and afraid when she sees you, then of course, I should find a

way to prevent her from meeting you. It''s perfectly normal for me to do this, isn''t it?"

She shrugged, spreading her hands out.

She deliberately concealed the fact that she already knew what had happened between them.

Sydney''s words brought themselves to Luke''s attention.

Hearing her say that Sean was afraid of him made him feel as if his heart had been squeezed by

someone. It was an ufortable feeling.

"Why is she afraid of me?" he murmured, as if asking both Sydney and himself.

Sydney rolled her eyes. "Don''t you know why? Anyway, you two suddenly became like this."

Luke fell silent and squeezed his coffee cup again.

    He seemed to know why.

After that night, he had said something harsh to Sean.

That might be the cause of her fear for him.

Sean''s fear and avoidance of him should have made him happy.

That was what he had wanted, wasn''t it?

But when Sean really treated him like this, he felt an indescribable sense of anger in his heart.

It made him realize that he didn''t really want this situation.

    Why was that?

He lowered his head and looked at his hand nkly.

Sydney had no idea what was on his mind, but she guessed that it had something to do with Sean.

She shook her head and tapped lightly on the table. "Alright, let''s not talk about Sean. You don''t like

her anyway, so isn''t it better for her to be out of the picture?"

''Of course not!'' Luke almost blurted out.

When the words reached his tongue, he suddenly realized that this wasn''t something he should say.

So, he swallowed the words back and nodded with a faint smile. "You''re right. It''s great not having

to see someone I don''t want to see."

He picked up his coffee and took another sip.

The delicate coffee cup perfectly covered his downturned mouth, and Sydney didn''t see that he

wasn''t as calm or happy as his tone suggested.

That was called a contradiction of the heart.
