Chapter 16 – Sanctuary of Knowledge

Chapter 16 – Sanctuary of Knowledge

As Qiu Gang and his followers approached the Hollow Library, powerful, hostile energies pressing forward, the ancient structure trembled slightly. The air grew heavy, charged with an ancient, formidable presence. Li Mei tensed, drawing her dagger. Wei Jin’s sword was raised defensively, anticipation and anxiety blending on his face.

Yet, Shen Mu remained calmly focused on the sealed doors, sensing something deep within the library itself.

Qiu Gang stepped confidently forward, a cold smile on his lips. “You cannot hide forever, Shen Mu.”

He reached out, his palm glowing faintly with gathered energy, preparing to force open the doors.

But the moment his fingers touched the stone surface, a powerful surge of energy erupted from the ancient engravings. A wave of invisible force pulsed outward, throwing Qiu Gang violently backward. He crashed to the ground, eyes wide in shock and pain.

“What—?” Wei Jin whispered, eyes widening in surprise.

The other intruders hesitated, their confidence faltering as they sensed an overwhelming presence awaken within the library walls.

A deep, ancient voice echoed throughout the chamber, reverberating with authority. “None may bring violence into the Hollow Library. Those who enter seeking knowledge are welcome; those who seek harm will find only ruin.”

Qiu Gang rose slowly, fury and caution warring within him. His gaze flickered once more toward Shen Mu, weighing his options. After a moment, he reluctantly signaled to his subordinates, “Fall back.”

Without another word, the attackers melted back into the darkness outside.

The oppressive aura slowly faded, leaving behind only serene silence. Li Mei relaxed slightly, lowering her blade.

Wei Jin exhaled shakily. “What just happened?”

“This library is protected,” Shen Mu explained calmly, sensing the lingering presence of ancient formations woven seamlessly into its walls. “Knowledge like this could never be left unguarded.”

“Indeed,” came a resonant voice from behind them.

They turned swiftly, startled, as an elderly man emerged from deeper within the library. His long silver hair cascaded gracefully down his back, and his wise eyes shone with quiet authority.

“I am Elder Hao, keeper of the Hollow Library,” he introduced himself calmly. “Few find this place, fewer still are permitted entry. The library chooses who may enter, and it has clearly chosen you.”

Shen Mu inclined his head respectfully. “Thank you for your timely intervention, Elder.”

“It wasn’t my doing,” Elder Hao replied, smiling faintly. “The library protects itself, responding to threats on its own.”

Wei Jin stared in awe. “This place is alive?”

“In a manner of speaking,” Elder Hao replied gently. “It holds knowledge powerful enough to require its own defenses. Only those whose purpose aligns with seeking deeper truths may enter freely.”

Li Mei glanced meaningfully at Shen Mu. “Then it’s clear this place recognizes you.”

Elder Hao regarded Shen Mu intently, a knowing look in his eyes. “It senses your unique resonance—what some would call Dao Insight.”

Shen Mu inclined his head respectfully. “Can you guide me?”

Elder Hao nodded slowly, his gaze steady. “Come. There is something here, something written long ago, intended for one exactly like you.”

He led them deeper into the library, where ancient truths awaited—truths Shen Mu now knew he must embrace fully, no matter the cost.
