Chapter 79: Chapter 78: City of the Dead (1/2)

    “ng!”

The sewer manhole cover had been pushed aside, flipping over several times before hitting the ground with a thunderous crash.

Then a small head poked out from the sewer, its little eyes darting around energetically, scanning the surroundings before turning back and calling out twice, then leaping out first.

The sewer exit was rather hidden, located in an alley connected to amercial street.

Shao Zifeng had barely steadied himself when a smell of burning mixed with a strong stench of blood hit his nostrils, causing him to frown. He thought it was a scent he had picked up on his person and didn’t pay much attention to it.

ncing down at himself, he realized his clothing was beyond salvage, stained with blood mixed with mud dried by Qiuqiu, emitting an indescribable foul odor, altogether quite overwhelming.

With the situation being urgent, he could not afford to care about it; what was most important was to seek help from the Abnormal Administration Bureau. He didn’t know how many were still alive in the sewers, but figured he should try to save anyone he could.

Turning the corner of the alley exit, Shao Zifeng’s eyes widened abruptly, his mind going nk as he incredulously observed the decaying streetscape.

This was a smallmercial street, but the scene before him resembled a dead city.

The old shopfronts were adorned with various signs, while the once-clear ss windows were now covered in cracks and bloodstains, beneath themy a thickyer of shattered ss.

Inside the shops, mes flickered, and rolling smoke filled the entire street.

The concrete street was pockmarked and uneven, with dark dried bloodstains exuding a strong, iron-like odor. Several mutted bodiesy chaotically in pools of blood, their dying nerves twitching with torn flesh.

    The bloody sight was ring.

Shao Zifeng felt a sudden chill, an unreal sensation of vertigo, his hands trembling involuntarily.

What in the world had happened, why had Su City turned into this?

    “Ying ying~”

Qiuqiu nced at the street, not noticing anything amiss.

It then looked up at Shao Zifeng, who seemed about to copse, and stood on its hind legs to embrace his thigh, its gaze filled with worry.

“Right, the phone… the phone,” Shao Zifeng said frantically as he took out his cellphone, his hands shaking as he dialed a number etched into his memory: “I’m sorry, the number you have dialed is temporarily unavable. Sorry…”

Shao Zifeng waspletely stunned, his pupils dted as the cold mechanical voice echoed in his ears.

His hand fell limp, the phone slipping from his grasp while he stood there, his face devoid of color.

    Still no signal.

How could there still be no signal after leaving the sewers?

He wondered about his mother, if she was safe or if something had happened to her.

His mind was a tangled mess, with all sorts of worst-case scenarios haunting him.

    “Ying~”

Qiuqiu watched Shao Zifeng, silent and motionless, feeling anxious. It was about to offer someforting words when it suddenly turned its head towards something else.

Its gaze was icy, with a flicker of fire in its eyes, warily staring at a bridal shop ahead.

“Bang!” The ss window of the bridal shop exploded outward as a blood-covered figure was hurled out, crashing heavily onto the ground, coughing up blood profusely.

Qiuqiu grew more alert, moving forward cautiously, positioning itself protectively behind Shao Zifeng.

    “Ssss~”

Apanied by a familiar and unpleasant hiss, a ck-haired spider leg kicked away the remaining ss, poking its head out from the shattered window.

Its blood-red gaze locked onto the coughing figure with a hideous sneer, the newly evolved creature in desperate need of a substantial blood meal to replenish its energy, angered by the resistance it faced, flinging the man away.

The loss of so much blood pained it just to think about.

Suddenly, the Blood-sucking Tarant froze mid-leap, slowly turning its head, its eight eyes filled with murderous bloodlust, focusing on Shao Zifeng.

    Fresh food!

    “Ssss!!”

    “Roar!”

This ugly brute dared to roar at it, and without hesitation, Qiuqiu roared back.

Shao Zifeng, jolted out of his stupor by the twin roars, came back to his senses and saw the Blood-sucking Tarant, galloping furiously toward him on its eight long legs, a surge of nameless rage flooding his heart.

Damn thing, it was you again!

All his unease and worry for his mother were now transformed into a zing anger.

“Qiuqiu, conserve your energy, don’t use skills that consume a lot,” he instructed.

The situation was unclear, and it was unknown how many more Blood-sucking Tarants there might be, so he decided to be cautious.

    “Roar!”

Feeling Shao Zifeng’s intent, Qiuqiu responded with a roar, its body suddenly bursting into a zing me. It dug its ws into the ground, pushed off with its hind legs, and instantly transformed into a streak of crimson me, trailing a long fiery tail.

The Blood-sucking Tarant, seeing the rapidly approaching ball of fire, had a sh of wariness in its eyes. Its front limbs rubbed against each other, gleaming with an intimidating cold light, and stabbed toward the ball of fire.

    “Qiuqiu, dodge!”

Qiuqiu agilely dodged the Blood-sucking Tarant’s ambush, rushed beneath it, swung around with a tail whip, and fiercely struck its abdomen.

A charred mark was left on the spider’s belly, and the attached fire element continuously eroded its wound.

    “Hiss!”

The Blood-sucking Tarant’s abdomen was struck with such force that it arched up high, nearly flipping over, and the continuous burning filled its spider eyes with blood-red substance.

Before it could react, another enormous force came from below. The Blood-sucking Tarant was whipped off its eight legs and mmed heavily onto the ground littered with broken stones.

“Elemental Spirit, Wood Thorn,” Shao Zifeng said, his gaze like a torch as he watched the Blood-sucking Tarant with its eight legs in the air, struggling to stand up.

    “Heehee~”

The Elemental Spirit giggled as it flew up into the air, waved its tiny hand, and the ground trembled. Stones danced about, and a thick Wood Thorn burst from underneath, piercing the Blood-sucking Tarant’s swollen abdomen, sttering green liquid everywhere.

    “Hiss!!”

The Blood-sucking Tarant, in pain, shook its eight slender legs at the Wood Thorn, seemingly trying to pull it out.

Seeing this, Qiuqiu leaped up and targeted the Blood-sucking Tarant’s mouth with its tail, knocking several sharp teeth flying.

The Elemental Spirit frowned slightly in dissatisfaction, the luster flowing through its jade-like,rge eyes. It waved its little hand again, and the wood elemental energy gathered above the Blood-sucking Tarant’s head.

The Blood-sucking Tarant felt the elemental fluctuations above its head and showed a look of terror, its struggle for survival bing even more intense.

    Then…

Then a thin and small Wood Thorn appeared in mid-air, vastly different in size and thickness from the previous thorns released.

Shao Zifeng and Qiuqiu looked toward the Elemental Spirit holding out its tiny hand in mid-air, their faces showing a hint of surprise.

    So thin.

Even the Blood-sucking Tarant, upon seeing the Wood Thorn suspended above its head, breathed a sigh of relief.

Tsk, so thin, it definitely won’t stir my big cauldron.

Thinking this, the Blood-sucking Tarant gave up struggling, even opened its mouth apparatus, provocatively looking at the Elemental Spirit.

    As if to say,e on.

    Stir my big cauldron.

At first, the Elemental Spirit seemed a little embarrassed, then somewhat annoyed. It red hatefully at the Blood-sucking Tarant, its little face turningpletely… green.

It pressed down with its short hand, and the thin Wood Thorn, with a sound breaking the air, instantly stabbed into the Blood-sucking Tarant’s head. Before the Blood-sucking Tarant could react, the Elemental Spirit sped its hands together, and the green light in its crystal clear eyes shone brightly.

    “Hiss” (fourth tone)

    “Boom!”

    A muffled explosion.

The Blood-sucking Tarant’s head showed several cracks, then suddenly burst open.

Shreds of flesh mixed with green liquid sttered everywhere, and its eight spider legs first stretched rigidly, then fell limply into a heap, motionless.

The Elemental Spirit nodded in satisfaction, sporting a pleased expression, its two big eyes curved into crescents.

It turned to pounce on Shao Zifeng, seeking praise, but mid-way its form suddenly became unstable and more transparent.

Shao Zifeng’s heart skipped a beat and he quickly stepped forward to catch it with the small deer. The Elemental Spirit, touching the small deer, dissolved like melting snow, vanishing instantly.

“Very impressive, rest well,” Shao Zifeng said softly, stroking the small deer’s body.

Having dealt with the Blood-sucking Tarant, some of the anger in Shao Zifeng’s heart dissipated. He prepared to think carefully about his own situation and how to ensure his mother’s safety.

He took an energy potion out of his backpack and handed it to Qiuqiu. Just as Shao Zifeng was about to pick up his phone, he suddenly noticed the phone trembled.

    “Boom! Boom! Boom!”

A series of explosion sounds followed.

All the ss in the stores along the entire street burst, sending shards flying everywhere.

Blood-sucking Tarants hissed as they crawled out of the disy windows.

Shao Zifeng’s face changed drastically as he bellowed, “Qiuqiu, run!!”
