Clara’s eyes softened, but only slightly. “Because I still care about you, Victor. More than I should, even after everything.”

Change, or I won’t hesitate next time.” The warmth of her touch was a stark contrast to the cold that had invaded his body, and Victor felt a glimmer of hope mixed with fear.

Victor’s chest tightened, his desire to reach out and pull her into his arms almost overwhelming. “I’ll… I’ll do what it takes,” he promised, his voice a raspy whisper. Clara’s lips quirked into a small, almost sad smile. “We’ll see.”

The air around him felt colder, but the image of her face, a mix of anger and sorrow, burned in his mind. He knew that this was just the beginning, and that he had a long road ahead to win back her trust, but the spark of hope was enough to keep him moving forward.

She was standing there, her back straight, but her eyes betrayed the exhaustion and fear she had endured. Without a word, he closed the distance between them, his hands gently enclosing hers. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice a mix of concern and relief.

She lifted her head, her eyes meeting his under the moonlight. The glow of the blood moon and the luminescence of the ice core they had just retrieved mingled, casting a surreal light on their faces.

She glanced around at the destroyed buildings and the smoldering remains of the creatures they had fought. "But it’s hard to shake the fear sometimes."

Clara’s eyes sparkled, and she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "I know," she replied, her voice steady. "That’s what gets me through." She leaned in, her breath warm against his neck. "Thank you, Noah. For everything."

The tension between them was palpable, and for a moment, it seemed like he would close the gap, but Clara’s phone buzzed, breaking the spell.

"You know him," Clara replied, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "He’s always looking out for us, even if it’s in his own unique way." She pressed the phone to her ear. "Hey, Liam. Yes, we’re fine. No injuries. Just a little worn out."

When she hung up, he took a deep breath and looked at her earnestly. "We should head back to the base, but I don’t want to leave this moment just yet," he admitted, his voice low and intimate.

Noah’s eyes darkened, and he leaned in, his lips brushing hers lightly. "No, we can’t," he said, his voice husky. "But we’ll have more moments like this. I promise."

As they walked back through the ruins, their hands remained intertwined, a silent promise of the future they would fight for together. The blood moon still hung in the sky, a reminder of the dangers they faced, but for now, all that mattered was the warmth and strength they found in each other’s presence.
