Chapter 518 A Better Mond (Part Three)
Kathy didn''t say a word but listened to him attentively, nodding her head in the right spots and giving
him encouraging looks, urging him to go on.
"I had to use dirty means to support myself. I wanted to tear apart my father''s family for all the pain he
caused me. How dare he live happily with his family when I couldn''t live with mine? Everything I ever
did was only to win the affection of my father, but fate is a cruel mistress," Mond continued, with tears
streaming down his cheeks.
Kathy stretched out her hand and wiped his tears away. She realized that even this seemingly tough
and wealthy man had his own sorrows, just like everybody else.

"It was at that time that I found a little something called money. Not only could it solve all my problems
but also give me the life I wanted," Mond went on, staring nkly ahead.
"Mr. Mond, life isn''t always how we expect it to be," Kathy finally pitched in. Looking at Mond, she
seemed toe up with a way of making him feel better.
When Mond remained silent again, Kathy started to tell her story.
"You know what? I was born poor in the countryside, and both my parents are peasants. They made a
living by farming, and also went to work in a factory around our vige to make ends meet," Kathy said
seriously, with her eyes fixed on a pattern on the wall, not looking towards Mond at all.
"It sounded miserable but things went just well, until one day, when everything changed. I recall it was
stormy that day. My father was on night duty, and he didn''t get off work until 4:00 am. His other co-
workers had umbres, so they came home. But he didn''t have one, so he stood in front of the factory
gate, waiting. He intended to go home when the rain subsided, for he knew that he would get sick if he
got wet in the rain."
Mond noticed Kathy''s eyes. Although she was wearing make up, the grief in her eyes visibly shone
through. Telling this story was causing her severe emotional turmoil.
"It was almost at 5:00 am that the rain began to soften. As it was daybreak, off his work, my father
dly went back home," Kathy said, her voice carrying how much she missed her father. "However, he
walked so fast on the muddy path on the edge of the cliff. Because it was rainy and slippy, he missed
his step and slid back, and then fell off the cliff as he lost his bnce."
After a pause, she continued," It was a path that we had to walk past. We used to walk on it with great
care. But that day my father was eager to go home, so..." Kathy didn''t finish her sentence for she knew
that Mond had guessed the oue.
"I am still not over the pain that my father''s death caused me. But there is no point in drowning in self-
pity. My crying is not going to get him back. I still live in agony every day, for not having saved him that
day. But I cannot change circumstances. All I can do is forget the pain and move on from it. That is the
only way I can truly lead the life I want." her voice gradually rose by the end of her grand statement,
and she looked genuinely happy.
Mond looked at her without saying a word.
"You know what? I went back to my vigest year. I gave the 200, 000 I had saved in the past five
years to our vige head, and pleaded with him to mend that road and fill that abyss with earth. This
way, it will be more convenient and safe for the vigers to work on it. Now all the muddy paths have
been reced by asphalt roads and there are lights on the roads. My mother at home has received
much help from our neighbors," Kathy said confidently.
"Once I came to my vige, I saw the bright smile on my mother''s face, and I smiled dly as well. It
was the first time that I had seen her smile since my father passed away. I did what I did so I could
ensure that no one would face the same fate that I did and lose a family member," she said while
smiling sincerely, her eyes brimming with tears.
Mond remained silent after hearing her story. ''Although I don''t know this girl, she told me her own life
story. Even after losing her father, she has been strong and contributed her strength to make her vige
better instead of hating anyone or her hometown. It is people like her who make the world a better
ce to live in, '' he thought.
"I know being a hostess isn''t a decent job. This job is insignificant, or may be degrading in others'' eyes.
But I am satisfied with it. I don''t care what others think. As long as I can support myself and my mother,
I don''t think it''s a bad choice to work as a hostess. In fact, it is one of the best jobs that I have had,
although people always look down upon it," she said downheartedly, her voice carrying less passion
than before.
"How old are you?" Mond suddenly asked. He assumed that the girl must be very young.
"I''m 20," Kathy answered with a serious glint in her eyes, that made her look much older than the 20
she confessed to be.
Mond rose slowly. ''Compared to this girl, I am just a coward. I am ashamed of myself. Although we
both have gone through hard times, but her attitude towards life is totally different from mine. I should
be like her, '' he thought.
"If you have other choices, I would suggest that you quit this job. I believe your potential would be
better appreciated elsewhere," he said and then left thepartment.
Kathy stared at Mond''s back silently. ''He must have undergone more pains than I have. There is great
pain in his soul that will be very hard to get rid of, '' she thought to herself.
Mond stood in front of the bathroom mirror and stared at the reflection, deep in thought. He then
washed his face and made a mental note to be a better person from that day onwards. He resolved to
let go of his hatred and form better connections with people. He owed it to his past, the girl he just
talked to and Cherry.
