The Rift in the Sky

The sun had long since dipped behind the horizon, leaving only a faint glow in the sky as the Stone family settled into the comfortable rhythm of their evening routine. The faint hum of crickets and cicadas filtered in through the open windows of their modest home, blending with the familiar clink of dishes and the occasional giggle from their three-year-old daughter, Ava.

Adrian Stone, his dark hair falling slightly into his eyes, stood at the kitchen sink, rinsing the last of the dinner plates. He glanced over at Emily, his wife, who was leaning against the counter with a soft, content smile on her lips. Her long, wavy brown hair framed her face, and her eyes sparkled with the warmth he had come to know so well over the years. The day’s exhaustion clung to her, but it was the kind of tiredness that came from a day well spent. Between Adrian’s engineering job and Emily’s martial arts classes, the couple had carved out a life that was full, but simple.

At the kitchen table, Ava sat with her favorite stuffed bunny, bouncing it up and down in her lap. Her tiny, bright eyes—mirrors of her mother’s—were alight with childish glee. "Mommy! Look! Bunny can hop!" she declared, her voice ringing with excitement.

Emily chuckled, stepping over to kiss the top of Ava’s head. “He’s quite the talented bunny,” she said softly, her hand brushing over Ava’s soft curls.

This was their life—quiet, peaceful. It was the kind of life Adrian had always hoped for. No drama, no danger. Just the steady, predictable rhythm of daily family routines.

But all that would change in an instant.

A low, rumbling vibration suddenly thrummed through the floor beneath Adrian’s feet, rattling the silverware on the counter. His hand froze mid-motion, the plate still in his grip, as he looked up with a furrowed brow. Emily’s body tensed beside him, her martial arts training making her hyper-aware of anything out of the ordinary.

“Did you hear that?” she asked, her voice low but sharp.

Adrian set the plate down carefully and walked over to the window, pushing aside the curtain to peer out into the dusk. At first, everything seemed normal—their quiet street bathed in the last fading light of day. But then he noticed something strange—a glow in the sky, faint but growing, deep purple streaks cutting across the fading blue like cracks in the heavens.

“I don’t like this,” Adrian muttered, his pulse quickening as he watched the sky swirl in an unnatural dance of color.

Emily was at his side in an instant, her eyes wide with the same concern he felt. “Adrian, what’s happening?” she whispered, the edge of tension in her voice now undeniable.Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.

“I don’t know,” Adrian replied, his heart thudding in his chest. “But whatever it is, it’s not normal.”

Ava, sensing the shift in her parents'' energy, looked up from her bunny. “Daddy? Mommy? What’s wrong?”

Before Adrian could answer, a deafening roar ripped through the sky, as if the heavens themselves were being torn apart. A blinding flash of light erupted from the glowing cracks, flooding the entire house with an intense, unnatural brightness.

“Get down!” Adrian shouted, instinctively pulling Emily and Ava close as the very air around them seemed to pulse with a strange energy. It was as though reality itself was being twisted, bent out of shape, and they were caught in the middle of it.

The floor beneath their feet vanished. For a terrifying, weightless moment, they were suspended in nothingness, falling through a blinding sea of light and sound. Adrian’s mind raced, trying to make sense of what was happening, but the sensory overload was too much to process.

Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, everything went dark.

When Adrian awoke, his first instinct was to gasp for air, his lungs burning as though he had been holding his breath for far too long. His heart pounded in his chest, and his body ached in ways he couldn’t quite understand. He blinked against the harsh sunlight streaming down on him, his vision blurry and disoriented.

    Where am I?

The question buzzed in his mind, but no answers came. Slowly, Adrian forced himself to sit up, wincing as he took in his surroundings.

He wasn’t in his house anymore.

Around him, towering buildings reached up into the sky—taller than anything he’d ever seen before, sleek and futuristic in design. The city around him was alive with movement—people bustling along the sidewalks, cars honking, the constant drone of traffic and life. And yet, there was something... off. Something not quite right.

“Emily?” Adrian’s voice came out as a croak, his throat dry as sandpaper.

Beside him, Emily stirred, groaning softly as she blinked her eyes open. “Adrian... what happened?”

“I don’t know,” Adrian replied, his voice shaking slightly as he helped her to her feet. “But I think we’re somewhere... different.”

A soft whimper drew their attention, and Adrian’s heart clenched as he turned to see Ava, still clutching her bunny, her eyes wide with confusion and fear.

“Daddy?” Ava’s voice was small, trembling. “Where’s our house?”

Adrian knelt down and pulled her into his arms, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “I don’t know, sweetheart,” he whispered, his heart aching at the sight of his daughter’s fear. “But we’ll figure it out. I promise.”

Emily’s gaze was sharp as she scanned their surroundings, her body coiled with the tension of someone ready for a fight. “We need to move,” she said quietly. “We’re too exposed here. We don’t know what’s going on, but we can’t stay out in the open.”

Adrian nodded, standing and taking Ava’s hand as they began walking down the street, trying to blend into the crowd. His mind raced, trying to process everything at once. The buildings, the people, the strange technology—it all felt so... unreal.

Then, something in the distance caught his eye.

At first, it was just a gleam of metal against the sky, but as they moved closer, the shape became more distinct. A tower—tall and gleaming, with a massive letter “A” emblazoned on its side.

    Adrian’s heart skipped a beat.

“No way...” he whispered under his breath, his eyes widening in shock.

“What is it?” Emily asked, her voice tense as she followed his gaze.

Adrian swallowed hard, his mind spinning. “I think... we’re not in our universe anymore.”

Emily frowned, confusion etching across her features. “What do you mean?”

Adrian pointed toward the distant tower. “That’s Stark Tower,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Emily’s eyes widened in understanding. “You’re telling me... we’re in the Marvel Universe?”

Adrian nodded, his stomach churning with the realization. “Yeah... I think we are.”

The implications of that statement settled over them like a heavy weight. This wasn’t just a different world. This was a world of superheroes, of gods and monsters. A world constantly on the brink of destruction.

And they were stuck in the middle of it.
