Chapter 41: The Fragile Bond

The specter was defeated. The remnants of violet energy faded, dissolving into the air like ashes carried away by the wind.

Veil was at his limit. His breathing was ragged, each inhale a monumental effort. His arms trembled, his legs threatened to give out at any moment.

He planted a hand on his knee, forcing himself upright. Every movement was agony. His muscles screamed for rest, but when he lifted his eyes, he saw Alynia lying motionless on the ground.

    Veil (hoarse, panicked): "Alynia…?!"

He took a step, then another. Each one was a trial. His side throbbed painfully, but he pressed on. His vision blurred. His hands brushed against the cold stone walls, desperate for balance.

Veil (murmuring): "Move… Please, move…"You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

His knee buckled. The air left his lungs in a sharp gasp.

    Veil (internal): "Not now. Move!"

His hands clawed at the floor, seeking support. There was nothing left in him, but the fear of losing her burned stronger than anything. He forced himself up, stumbled forward, and kept moving. The pain was unbearable, but he no longer listened to his body. His legs felt like lead, his back was tight with strain—every step was a victory.

He reached her side, his eyes wide with desperation. She lay on her side, her face turned toward him, her eyes closed. Her chest wasn’t moving.

    Veil (shouting): "No, no, no…!"

He collapsed to his knees beside her. His shaking hand slipped beneath the nape of her neck, lifting her head gently, but his fingers trembled so much he struggled to hold her properly.

His forehead pressed against hers. He closed his eyes, his silent tears falling onto Alynia’s face, mixing with the dust and blood smeared across her skin.

Veil (whispering, broken voice): "Wake up… Alynia, wake up…"

He felt it—the faint warmth of her breath, barely brushing against his cheek.

    She was still breathing.

    The realization almost shattered him.

    Veil (shaky exhale, relieved): "You''re here… You''re here…"

His strength abandoned him. His arms gave out, and his head fell gently against hers. Their breaths mingled, warm against the cold air.

    Neither of them moved.

    Exhausted. Broken. But alive.

    Total silence.
