Chapter 23: The Betrayal

Upon hearing 1068’s tip, the three-headed flying leeches, which were vomiting rats, quickly turned around, their 18 eye stalks pointing directly at Charles in the corner.

    “You bastard!!”

Charles leapt forward, heading straight for the door. Just as he was about to exit, he pulled out a revolver with his left hand.

“Bang!” Half of 1068’s mutilated head was blown off. Amid its screams and curses, Charles burst through the door and ran for his life.

This time, the leeches didn’t engage Charles in close combat. The three-headed leeches gathered at a distance, continuously spewing corrosive liquid. Charles twisted his body, rapidly evacuating through the “rain of bullets.”

This was just the beginning. More and more leeches followed behind Charles, bringing life to the third laboratory, which had been silent for years.

Pursued by the flying leeches, Charles found his way back. When he finally exerted all his strength to escape the laboratory, the area behind him lit up with bright red light. He turned in horror to see the entire massive wall illuminated with red light, as they roared and emerged from within the walls, their eye stalks blazing with anger, staring fixedly at Charles.

Hundreds of flying leeches twisted their bodies and disappeared one by one.

A chill shot from Charles’s tailbone to his brain. He turned and ran towards the coast at top speed.

“Am I stealing your wives? Why are you chasing me like this!”

“Bang, bang, bang,” Charles jumped several steps directly onto a three-meter-high rock, using his excellent physical abilities to leap between the stones.

With his dark vision, Charles ran quickly, but he felt no sense of security. He looked around nervously, guarding against the invisible leeches that could emerge from anywhere.

In the distance, he saw the bright searchlight of the Narwhal on the sea.

“The light is on, which means the crew has boarded. I just need to get back to the coast, and I’ll win!” Thinking this, Charles’s steps grew larger.

“Hum, hum, hum,” the flying leeches appeared in the air, their large red lights blocking Charles’s path. They formed a pocket formation and moved towards Charles.

“So you think highly of me, huh? You’re using tactics against just one person.” Charles stood on a rock, gasping for breath, a smile on his lips.

Looking at the sky filled with red light, Charles said sentimentally, “It’s really beautiful. Drone shows pale in comparison.”

“But, compared to you glowing bugs, I’d rather see drones now.” Charles clutched the few relics he had, and with a strong kick, he charged towards the distant red wall without hesitation.Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator.

“Spit, spit, spit,” all the flying leeches began to spew saliva, and the air illuminated by the red light started to rain acid.

Charles dove back into the rock forest below, using the rocks as cover to continue forward.

The stones above his head corroded by the acid made a sizzling sound, and Charles, with his feet padding the few remaining spots, rushed forward. The distance between him and the coast was getting shorter.

The leeches seemed to have anticipated Charles’s moves. Numerous mouths with sharp teeth emerged from the ground, biting hard at his feet.

Unable to gain leverage, Charles pushed off the wall and returned to the top of the rock, only to be greeted by another round of acid rain.

Even with his agile body, flipping and dodging in the air, it was ultimately futile.

Charles’s collar was corroded with holes of various sizes, and the phlegm-like acid droplets fell on his body, producing puffs of white smoke.

“Ah~” Feeling the increasing burning pain on his body, Charles, trapped in a desperate situation, knew he couldn’t hold on much longer.

    “Am I going to die?”

“Boom!” A loud explosion suddenly echoed from the distance, and a large section of the red light in the sky suddenly disappeared.

Charles, standing on one leg on one of the few clear spots, saw this and a look of wild joy appeared on his face behind the mask, “That’s the Narwhal’s deck gun. My crew is helping me.”

No matter how many flying leeches there were, they were still made of flesh and blood. In the face of cannonballs, they were no different from paper.

“Boom!” Another large section of the red curtain in the sky was torn apart. The leeches seemed to panic, unsure whether to flee or continue to intercept Charles.

With the pressure suddenly relieved, Charles sprinted at full speed and finally reached the coast.

As he leapt into the air, the cold seawater alleviated the burning sensation all over his body. His limbs flailed wildly as he swam towards the Narwhal.

The first thing he said as he climbed up the soft ladder onto the deck was, “Set sail.”

The Narwhal, already prepared, opened full throttle and quickly left the island.

Lying on the deck, exhausted, Charles saw the few wet relics beside him and laughed excitedly. “Hahaha, see that, snotbugs! I took your things! And I got out! I won this round!”

Dubious, the rat ran over and helped Charles up. “Captain, you should take off this mask.”

Charles was startled. “How long have I been wearing this mask?”

As soon as this thought crossed his mind, a strange voice abruptly exploded in his brain.

“I don’t know either, but it must be at least an hour or two.”

Charles quickly removed the mask from his face. The moment he took off the mask, everything around him darkened by several levels, and the pain in his body instantly increased several times.

But at this moment, Charles focused all his attention on his mind, constantly asking who the voice was.

Seeing his captain standing still, rat waved his hand in front of him, “Captain, what’s wrong with you? Are you okay?”

Charles ignored him and sat on the ground as if waiting for something. When he realized that the voice in his head had not appeared after he took off the mask, he let out a deep breath.

Then Charles felt a sense of fear. “Fortunately, if I had worn it for a few more minutes, I might have had to fight my other personalities for control of my body.”

“This mask should be worn with caution in the future. The benefits are indeed good, but the drawbacks are equally astonishing. When I wear the mask, I don’t resist taking it off, but my personality becomes very impulsive.”

Seeing the captain return to normal, the other crew members also breathed a sigh of relief and hurriedly carried Charles towards the captain’s quarters.

After a flurry of activity, Charles’s wounds corroded by the acid were bandaged. At this moment, Charles looked more like a mummy than the bandages.

Weakly, he sat up from the bed and looked at the circle of crew members around him. “Who fired the cannon just now?”

If it hadn’t been for the help of the deck gun, Charles would definitely not have been able to return.

“It was me! It was me!” The white rat Lili climbed to Charles’s side along the sheets.
