Chapter 2: The Blueprint of Survival

The world blurred as Cairn ran, his breath ragged, chest burning with every gasp of the stale, dust-choked air. His makeshift barrier crumbled behind him with a deafening crash, the screech of the shadow creature piercing through the desolate streets like a blade.

    Keep moving.

That thought pounded in his skull, louder than the rhythmic thud of his footsteps against fractured stone. His legs moved on instinct, driven by fear and something deeper—something primal. The city stretched around him like a decaying labyrinth, its shattered towers looming overhead like the ribs of a long-dead beast.

    The shadows pursued him.

Every flicker of movement in the corner of his eye sent adrenaline surging through his veins. They weren’t just creatures—they were predators, and Cairn was the prey. Their forms shifted with each movement, fluid and unnatural, as if the laws of reality bent to their will.

    [New Directive: Seek Shelter.]

    [Structural Integrity Scan Activated.]

Another flicker in his vision—blue lines overlaying the ruins ahead, highlighting crumbling walls and weak foundations. But amidst the chaos, one structure pulsed with a faint, ethereal glow. A stable building, partially intact, hidden behind layers of debris.

Without hesitation, Cairn veered toward it.

The entrance was blocked by the remnants of a collapsed archway. Rubble piled high, twisted metal beams jutting out like the bones of a fallen giant. Behind him, the shadows hissed, their distorted forms slithering faster.

    No time.

The whispers surged in his mind, not words but raw data—schematics, lines, connections. His hand shot out instinctively, fingers tracing patterns in the air as if sketching invisible symbols.

[Blueprint Activated: Structural Manipulation - Reinforced Passageway.]

A flash of light erupted from his fingertips. The debris shifted, stone grinding against stone as the rubble reformed itself, opening a narrow path just wide enough for him to squeeze through. Cairn dived inside, heart pounding like a war drum.

The passage collapsed behind him the moment he cleared it, sealing the entrance in a cascade of dust and debris. The screech of the pursuing shadows was cut off abruptly, leaving only the sound of his ragged breathing.

    Darkness engulfed him.

For a moment, Cairn just lay there on the cold, cracked floor, his body trembling with exhaustion. Sweat trickled down his face, mixing with grime and blood from scrapes he hadn’t even felt during the chase.

Then, the system flickered to life again:

    [Safe Zone Established - Temporary.]

    [System Synchronization in Progress…]

Cairn forced himself to sit up, his back against the crumbling wall. His eyes adjusted slowly to the dim light filtering through cracks in the structure. This wasn’t just any building—it looked like an old command center. Broken consoles lined the walls, their screens dark and lifeless. Dust hung in the air like a fine mist, disturbed only by his movements.

For the first time since waking up, he had a moment to think.

    Who am I?

His name—Cairn Valis—was the only anchor in a sea of missing memories. Everything else was a void, just like the darkness outside.

But the power he wielded—that wasn’t unfamiliar. His hands trembled slightly as he stared at them, still faintly glowing with residual energy. The ability to reshape the world, to alter structures with nothing but thought and will… it felt natural. Like breathing.

Was this who he had been before?

His gaze drifted to the shattered remains of a console nearby. Curiosity overpowered his fear. He crawled toward it, brushing away debris with trembling fingers. The screen flickered weakly when he touched it, faint blue lines forming fragmented words:

    [ARCHIVE ACCESS DENIED.]

    [REQUIRES ADMINISTRATIVE OVERRIDE.]

Cairn frowned. Another surge of instinct took over. Without fully understanding why, he reached out—not physically, but mentally. The same way he manipulated the barrier, the passage, the debris… he could feel the structure of the console’s code, the hidden blueprint behind the technology.

With a mental “push,” something clicked.

    The screen flashed.

    [Access Granted.]

    [Data Fragment Retrieved.]

A holographic map projected into the air, showing a vast cityscape riddled with red zones and corrupted sectors. At the center was a pulsing icon labeled: “EIDOLON CORE.”

Before he could process it, a new alert appeared:

[Voidborn Presence Detected - Breach Imminent.]

    Cairn’s heart skipped a beat.

A low growl echoed from beyond the sealed entrance. The shadows hadn’t given up. They were patient, relentless.

But Cairn wasn’t the same helpless figure who’d woken up in the street. Not anymore.

[New Blueprint Unlocked: Defensive Constructs - Energy Turret (Prototype).]

A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

“Let’s see what you’ve got,” he whispered.
