Chapter 5: monsters return

The wind howled through the desolate city streets, carrying with it the sharp bite of winter and the heavy scent of decay. Shredded newspapers and fragments of trash danced in the gale, swirling like ghosts of a city that had once thrived. Now, an eerie stillness had settled, broken only by the whispers of those who still remembered.

The "High Rise Devil"—once a myth, then a warning—had returned.

Monster stepped into the dim light of a flickering streetlamp, his form casting a distorted shadow across the cracked pavement. No longer human, no longer beast, he had become a grotesque amalgamation of both. Wings, black as a starless night, spread wide from his back, each feather jagged and uneven like the shards of a shattered soul. His body, stretched and twisted, bore the scars of countless agonies. His glowing, ember-like eyes burned with an intensity that turned the air around him heavy.

The city had forgotten him, moved on, grown complacent. But he had not forgotten. He had spent years in the abyss, clawing his way back, driven by a singular purpose: destruction.

As he moved through the empty streets, the city seemed to react to his presence. Lights dimmed; a dog’s howl echoed in the distance before it abruptly stopped. The world itself seemed to shrink away from him.

Monster paused at the base of a towering building, his eyes scanning the skyline. This was his domain—a labyrinth of steel and concrete, a testament to humanity’s hubris. Once, he had ruled it through fear and violence, but time had eroded his reign, replacing his legacy with stories and whispers. Now, he would remind them.

But as he stood there, a voice pierced the stillness.

“Monster.”The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

The single word carried a weight that cut through the cold air. Monster turned, his gaze locking onto a figure perched on the edge of a rooftop. Cloaked in shadow, the Black Angel stood motionless, his presence as cold and unyielding as the concrete beneath his feet.

The Black Angel stepped forward, his silhouette framed against the faint light of the moon. “You’ve returned,” he said, his tone calm but laced with something deeper—curiosity, perhaps even amusement.

Monster didn’t respond immediately. His wings flared slightly, the movement sharp and deliberate. “The city belongs to no one,” he growled. His voice was guttural, like a storm barely contained.

“Belonging is irrelevant,” the Black Angel replied. “What matters is power. And you wield it recklessly.”

Monster’s eyes narrowed, his expression unreadable. “Reckless? I am chaos incarnate. There’s no order, no balance. Only destruction.”

The Black Angel stepped closer, his movements deliberate, predatory. “Destruction without purpose is meaningless. You could be more than just a storm. You could be the architect of a new world—a world where chaos and order coexist under our control.”

Monster let out a low, menacing laugh. “Control? That’s a lie you tell yourself to feel powerful. You’re just another creature pretending to be above the rest.”

“And you,” the Black Angel said, his voice hardening, “are a creature consumed by your own suffering. You could be more than this.”

The words struck a chord, though Monster’s expression betrayed nothing. His wings beat once, sending a gust of wind through the street, scattering debris.

“I don’t need you,” Monster snarled. “I don’t need anyone.”

The Black Angel tilted his head, a faint smile playing at his lips. “Perhaps. But even chaos has its limits. You’ll see.”

Without another word, Monster launched into the sky, his wings slicing through the air with a thunderous roar. The Black Angel watched him go, his gaze sharp and calculating.

Monster might have believed himself untouchable, but the Black Angel knew better. Chaos was powerful, yes, but it was also predictable, a pattern waiting to be exploited.

For now, the city would cower beneath the shadow of the High Rise Devil. But the Black Angel would wait, patient and deliberate, until the time came to seize control.

Because in this world of monsters and devils, the rules were meant to be rewritten.
