Chapter 1: The Letter Part 2: The Arrival of the Letter

The letter in Jaehoon’s hands felt heavier than it should. His fingers trembled as he read the elegant handwriting, struggling to make sense of the words on the page. The letterhead was ornate, adorned with a crest he didn’t recognize—a stylized emblem that looked like it belonged to a family of immense wealth and influence. The sight of it made Jaehoon’s heart race. The wax seal, pressed with a strikingly intricate design, seemed too formal for a simple piece of correspondence. As his eyes moved across the text, the name “Lee” stood out, and with it, the gravity of the situation began to sink in.

The letter began with a formal salutation, addressing him as “Jaehoon, of the esteemed Lee family.” His heart skipped a beat. There had to be some mistake. He wasn’t part of any powerful family, let alone one as prestigious as the Lees. The letter continued, detailing something that made his head spin.

It spoke of an inheritance, an immense fortune, passed down through generations of the Lee family. And, according to the letter, Jaehoon was its rightful heir. His breath caught in his throat. He reread the words, trying to make sense of it, but they didn’t get any clearer. This couldn’t be right. Jaehoon was just an ordinary man, a courier with a modest life, trying to make ends meet for his family. He had no connection to the Lee family, or so he thought.

The letter explained that a distant relative, someone Jaehoon had never heard of, had been part of the Lee family centuries ago. According to the legal representative of the Lee family, the fortune was now his. It was written in such a formal, almost cold tone that it left him more bewildered than excited. The inheritance included vast estates, investments, and assets that could make Jaehoon a wealthy man beyond his wildest dreams.

At first, he thought it was some kind of elaborate prank or scam. After all, he had heard of similar stories—people being contacted out of the blue with claims of a long-lost fortune or an unexpected inheritance. He had been cautious all his life, never one to believe in miracles or quick fixes. Yet, something about this letter felt different. It didn’t seem like the usual junk mail or phishing attempt. This letter was far too official, too precise, to be dismissed as mere fraud.

The contents went on to explain that Jaehoon was to contact the Lee family’s legal representative, a man named Lee Minwoo, immediately. There were specific steps to follow, though the details were vague. He was instructed to arrive at their office to discuss the inheritance further, and the letter mentioned that time was of the essence—whatever claim he had to the fortune would need to be secured quickly, as other family members might contest it. The final lines were a warning of sorts, urging him to act swiftly and to consult no one until the process was complete.

Jaehoon’s mind raced. How could this be happening? Could it be true? He glanced down at the letter again, his eyes scanning the fine print. The more he read, the more absurd it seemed. He had no connection to the Lee family. His father had always spoken of his humble beginnings, of the family’s struggles to survive, but there had never been any mention of ties to a wealthy lineage. Jaehoon’s grandfather had been a factory worker, and his father had spent most of his life working odd jobs to make ends meet. The idea that Jaehoon, an average man with no known ties to any aristocratic family, could be the heir to such an immense fortune seemed inconceivable. The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

He set the letter down on the table, his thoughts a whirlwind of confusion and disbelief. The possibility that the letter might be real, that he could be connected to such a legacy, felt like a dream he could not yet accept. He glanced at Jiwoo, who was sitting nearby, looking up from her work with a curious expression on her face. She must have noticed the sudden tension in his posture because she immediately asked, “What is it, Jaehoon? What’s wrong?”

Her voice broke through his haze, and he quickly stood up, pacing back and forth in the small living room. Jiwoo had never seen him like this before—so rattled, so uncertain. He felt embarrassed, but his mind was overwhelmed by the implications of the letter. He took a deep breath and walked over to her, handing her the paper without saying a word. Jiwoo unfolded it, her brow furrowing as she read. She didn’t speak immediately, but Jaehoon could tell she was processing the information just as he had.

When she finished reading, Jiwoo sat silently for a moment, her hands resting on the letter. “This... this can’t be real,” she said, her voice steady, though there was a hint of disbelief. “I mean, how could this happen? You’re not connected to the Lee family, are you?”

Jaehoon shook his head, still trying to wrap his mind around the idea. “No, I’m not. I don’t know anyone in that family, and my father always said we had no ties to them. But this letter…” He trailed off, not knowing what to say next.

Jiwoo looked at him with a mixture of skepticism and concern. “It sounds like a scam. People are always getting letters like this, claiming they’ve inherited some fortune. It’s probably some kind of trick to get you to send them money or give out personal information.”

Jaehoon nodded absently, but deep down, something told him this wasn’t the same as the usual scam. There was something about the way the letter had been written, the formal language, the crest, and the wax seal. It felt too official to be fake. And yet, his mind clung to the skepticism that had guided him through life. He had learned to be cautious, to never trust anything that seemed too good to be true.

Jiwoo seemed to read his thoughts. “So, what do you think we should do? Should we just ignore it?”

Jaehoon hesitated, torn between doubt and curiosity. “I don’t know. But we can’t just ignore it. We need to find out more. What if this is real? What if this inheritance is real?” He shook his head again, frustrated with himself for even entertaining the idea. “I just don’t know what to believe.”

The idea of contacting someone at the Lee family’s legal office felt like an impossible step. The very notion that he, Jaehoon, could be an heir to a fortune he had no idea existed was too surreal. Still, as much as he wanted to dismiss it, something inside him urged him to follow through, to take that first step and see where it led. But that would mean stepping into a world he didn’t understand, a world of wealth, power, and connections far beyond his own.

Jiwoo, sensing his turmoil, placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “Maybe we should just call and ask. We don’t have to commit to anything right now. Let’s at least find out if this is real.”

Jaehoon nodded slowly, the weight of the decision pressing on him. The next step would be a leap into the unknown. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that this could be the opportunity he had been waiting for—a chance to change his family’s life, to give his children the future they deserved.

With a sigh, he picked up his phone, dialed the number provided in the letter, and waited for the line to connect. His heart raced in his chest as the phone rang, each second feeling like an eternity.
