Chapter 13: The Figure

Days stretched on, each one colder than the last. The biting chill had become unbearable, gnawing at the edges of Sam’s resolve. The fire in the hearth had once been a comforting presence, but now, it seemed like a fleeting warmth, quickly devoured by the oppressive cold that wrapped itself around their home. Sam’s parents, Claire and Caross, and Isonorai, shivered despite the layers of clothing they wore, their faces pale from the frost that had crept into their bones.

Sam could feel the weight of the cold on his own skin, and though the Cold Resistance skill had helped, he knew it wouldn''t be enough to protect them for much longer. The power of the cold was unnatural, a creeping force that had only worsened in the past days. It gnawed at the very air around them, biting into their skin, making even the simplest actions feel like an effort.

His mind wandered to the mysterious figure—the sorcerer—who seemed to be at the heart of all this. The villagers had whispered of strange lights in the forest and an ominous presence that moved through the trees like a shadow. Sam could sense it too, that prickling unease that crawled up his spine whenever he stepped outside, as if something—or someone—was watching him.

He glanced at his parents and Isonorai. They were huddled close together, their faces etched with worry and fear. The cold had drained their strength, leaving them vulnerable in ways Sam had never seen before. His parents, who had always been pillars of strength, seemed to be fighting a battle they couldn’t win.

“Sam,” Claire’s voice trembled as she spoke, her eyes filled with concern. “You’re still not well. This isn’t something you should be facing alone.”

Sam could hear the unspoken fear in her words. She was terrified of losing him again, of watching him slip away into the cold, just like before. But Sam couldn’t ignore the feeling in his gut—the feeling that this sorcerer, this mysterious figure, had something to do with what was happening. If he didn’t take action, they might all be lost to the icy grip that was slowly consuming their world.

"I’ve decided," Sam said, his voice firm despite the uncertainty that tugged at his heart. "I’m going to find the cause of this problem and stop it from getting worse. I have to know what’s going on."

Claire''s eyes widened in disbelief. "Sam, no. You can’t. It’s too dangerous. You’re just a child—"

"I’m not a child anymore, Mom," Sam interrupted, his voice softer now, but still determined. "I can’t just stand by and let this destroy everything. We don’t know how much longer we have before the cold consumes us completely."

Caross opened his mouth to speak, but he closed it again when he saw the determined look in Claire’s eyes. She had already spoken her piece, and there was no arguing with her when she was like this. Still, Caross’s expression was a mixture of pride and fear. He placed a hand on Sam’s shoulder, his voice low but filled with emotion. “You’re strong, son. But promise me you’ll be careful. This isn’t just about you anymore.”

Sam nodded, understanding the weight of his father’s words. “I promise. But I need to do this.”

Before Claire could protest further, Isonorai spoke up, her voice firm and resolute. "If you''re going, I''m going with you."

Sam turned to her, surprise flickering in his eyes. Isonorai had always been cautious, protective even, but the way she spoke now was different—there was a hunger in her voice, a desire to understand what was happening. "You don''t have to. I can do this alone."

"I’m not letting you go in there alone," Isonorai said, crossing her arms over her chest. "I’ve been curious about this figure for a while now. I need to know what he wants and what his end goal is. I can’t just sit here, not when there’s something so dangerous out there."

Sam couldn’t argue with her. The determination in her eyes was undeniable. But before he could respond, Isonorai leaned in and put on the most adorable, pleading face she could muster, her eyes wide and vulnerable. “Please, Sam? You know I can’t let you face this alone.”The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Sam sighed, feeling an unexpected warmth in his chest. He was defeated. “Fine. You win. But we leave in one hour. If you''re not ready, I’m going alone.”

Isonorai’s face lit up with joy, and she nodded eagerly. “I’ll be ready.”<hr>

One hour later, Sam, Isonorai, and their cold, weary parents stood at the edge of the village, the wind whipping around them, making it feel as if the very air were biting at their flesh. The village had fallen quiet, the usual sounds of life dampened by the oppressive cold. Even the animals had gone into hiding, leaving an eerie silence that weighed heavily on Sam’s chest.

They gathered what little information they could from the villagers. The stories were all the same—strange lights flickering through the trees, whispers on the wind, and the figure in the cloak who appeared and disappeared like a shadow. The villagers spoke with fear in their voices, their eyes darting nervously at the mention of the sorcerer. It was clear that something was wrong, something beyond the cold.

Sam felt his resolve harden. The sorcerer was real. He had to be. And Sam was going to find him.

“I’m entering the forest,” Sam said, his voice steady despite the trepidation that lingered in his heart.

Isonorai gave him a concerned look. “Are you sure? This place... it feels wrong.”

“I’m sure,” Sam said. “The sorcerer is connected to this. I can feel it.”

Together, they stepped into the forest, the cold air growing more oppressive with every step. The usual warmth of the forest, the gentle hum of life, was gone. The trees loomed overhead like silent sentinels, their branches twisted and gnarled by the frost. The ground was slick with ice, and every step they took was a struggle against the biting cold that seemed to seep into their bones.

As they ventured deeper into the forest, the air grew heavier, thick with an unnatural energy. Sam could feel it—the presence of something dark, something powerful that seemed to wrap itself around him like a shroud. It was as if the forest itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

The light was fading quickly, the sun dipping below the horizon and leaving the world bathed in an eerie twilight. Sam’s heart pounded in his chest, each beat louder than the last. The forest had grown eerily quiet, the usual sounds of wildlife absent. The only sound was the crunch of their footsteps through the frozen underbrush.

Then, just as Sam was beginning to think they had lost their way, a faint glow appeared ahead of them. It was soft at first, like a distant lantern in the dark, but it grew brighter with each step they took. Sam motioned for Isonorai to stay close, his senses on high alert. They crept forward, every step filled with tension, until they reached a small clearing bathed in an unnatural light.

At the center of the clearing stood a stone altar, ancient and weathered, its surface covered in a thin layer of frost. The air around it shimmered with a strange energy, and atop the altar lay an open tome, its pages glowing with an ethereal light. Standing beside the altar was a figure cloaked in dark robes, his face obscured by the hood.

Sam froze, his breath caught in his throat. The figure was exactly as the villagers had described—the Enigmatic Sorcerer. The air around him seemed to warp, and his eyes glowed with an unsettling light that pierced the darkness.

“You’ve come,” the sorcerer’s voice was soft, yet it carried through the clearing with a power that made Sam’s skin crawl. “I’ve been waiting for you, Sam.”

Isonorai tensed beside him, her grip tightening on the hilt of her blade. Sam forced himself to step forward, his voice steady despite the fear that gripped his heart. “Who are you? And what do you want with me?”

The sorcerer tilted his head slightly, as if considering the question. “Names have little meaning here. But you may call me Lareth. As for what I want... I seek understanding. Understanding of the power that now resides within you.”

Sam felt a chill run down his spine. “How do you know about that?”

Lareth’s gaze seemed to penetrate him, as if reading his very soul. “I have studied the ancient arts for many years. The power you possess, Sam, is rare—believed to be lost to time. But you, you are living proof that it still exists.”

Sam’s mind raced. This sorcerer knew more about his power than he did. Could he trust him?

“I can guide you,” Lareth continued, his voice soft but firm. “I can help you understand this power, control it before it consumes you. The choice is yours, Sam.”

Sam’s heart pounded in his chest. He had come here seeking answers, but now that they were in front of him, he felt a deep unease settle in his gut. Lareth’s words were tempting—guidance, protection, answers. But there was something about him, something hidden beneath the surface, that made Sam hesitate.

“I need time,” Sam said, his voice steady. “I’ll think about it.”

Lareth smiled, though there was no warmth in it. “Take all the time you need. But remember, time is not always on our side.”

Before Sam could respond, the sorcerer raised his hand, and the glow around the altar intensified. In an instant, Lareth and the altar vanished, leaving Sam and Isonorai standing in the clearing, surrounded by the silence of the forest. The cold seemed to lift, and the darkness returned to the trees.

Sam stood there for a moment, the weight of Lareth’s words heavy in his mind. Whatever path he chose, it would change everything.
