Now snobbish and cruel, he is quite judgemental of the poor. All he sees when he looks at Emile is a dirty, illiterate hired hand. His wife Felia and their daughter Danique are just the opposite. They look beyond Emile's station and are very kind to him. In time, Emile and Danique become very good friends. One day, Danique, despite knowing that her father only wants Emile around to work, offers to teach Emile to read and write at the mansion late at night in secrecy in her bedroom. Although he is worried about angering Maxime, he agrees. As the lessons go on, Emile and Danique begin realizing that they have feelings for each other and upon revealing them, allow themselves to fall deeply into a forbidden love. Still, they both know their relationship must remain a secret from Maxime and Felia. Soon enough, in their yearning to be together, Emile and Danique begin sneaking around.
