Tempest arrived at the village expecting the chaos of battle but instead found an unsettling silence. The entire village held its breath. Doors slammed shut as they approached, windows were hastily latched, and not a single soul was in sight. The wind carried faint growls from just beyond the treeline as dark tendrils pulsed from the Nether Rift above, casting long, shifting shadows across the landscape. Below, goblins and orcs swarmed like vermin over the earth in the distance.
Leon summoned a Knullifier—a smooth, black Oxsyn Stone device—and, with a conjured gust, launched it directly into the heart of the Rift. It was immediately sealed, leaving only the faint lingering scent of sulfur.
The fight that followed felt almost too easy. The horde was little more than a nuisance. Tempest moved through the goblins and orcs like a well-oiled machine. Kamari’s fists ignited in bursts of flame while Leon unleashed his wind blades, cutting down creatures in the trees. Imani impaled goblins with her ice spear, and Elijah made short work of the orcs with his lightning.
When the last orc crumpled to the ground, Elijah let out a triumphant yell, throwing his arms up. “Hell yeah! That was a breeze! I’m just glad we didn’t have to face a Leviathan, though. I don’t think I’d have the energy for that.”
Kamari, still riding the high of combat, smirked. “Don’t worry. We’d defeat it with the power of friendship!” He winced immediately. “Ugh, that sounded better in my head.”
Imani’s laughter echoed through the eerily quiet forest, causing Kamari to chuckle despite feeling a bit embarrassed. As he laughed, he noticed Elijah’s gaze lingering on him just a moment too long. Elijah’s friendly smile had shifted into a pointed glare—a silent warning. Kamari raised an eyebrow in response, giving him a look that seemed to say, "Relax."
Imani''s laughter faded, her lingering smile taking on a suspicious edge. "But seriously... doesn’t this all seem too easy?"
Elijah grinned. "Maybe we’re just that good." He paused, puffing out his chest. "But don’t worry, Imani. No matter how bad things get, I’ll always protect you—even if it’s against Zenersha, the Black Wyvern herself."
Leon snorted in amusement. "Weren''t you just relieved you didn''t have to face a Leviathan? Zenersha’s power was on another level. You wouldn’t last beyond her first strike."
Elijah shrugged. "Yeah, well, I’m full of surprises."
Suddenly, their light-hearted banter was interrupted by an unsettling chill that wrapped around them like a ghostly finger. The trees, which had once swayed rhythmically in the gentle breeze, now stood eerily still. Something was wrong.
The world seemed to hold its breath. Laughter froze in their throats as shadows deepened and an unnatural dusk settled around them. When the silence became unbearable, a figure emerged from the encroaching darkness. Cloaked in an inky shroud, Zaire stepped into the dim light.
“I''ve finally managed to separate you from your guardians again," he said.
His dark wings unfurled behind him, and his black eyes gleamed with a disturbing calm. The ground trembled beneath his feet as if the earth rejected his presence. Then, three Rifts tore open above, and Infernals of all threat classes poured through.
“It took a considerable amount of my Enre to summon so many Nether Rifts,” Zaire explained. “But for this moment? It was worth the sacrifice.” He paused, a faint smirk curling on his lips. “Not that I need to be at full strength to deal with you and your little squad.”
Kamari focused intently on Zaire. A familiar heat swelled in his chest, similar to what he had felt during their last encounter. This time, he wouldn''t hesitate. He was done being afraid.
Zaire''s dark aura coiled around him, suffocating the atmosphere. His voice echoed, “This time, Young Phoenix, there will be no escape.”

Zaire struck without warning. Shadows erupted from his body like a tidal wave, twisting into dark, jagged tendrils that lashed across the battlefield with terrifying speed. The sheer force of his power sent the squad scattering in all directions. Kamari barely had time to react before one of the tendrils hurled him backward, causing his body to skid across the cracked earth. When he finally came to a halt, he found himself alone, staring down Zaire.
He squared his shoulders and steadied his stance as his fists ignited with a searing yellow flame. The warmth provided a small comfort; however, it did nothing against the cold dread that Zaire exuded.
“You don’t understand, Young Phoenix," Zaire began. "This is bigger than you—bigger than any of us. You will only delay the inevitable. The Realm will be swallowed by darkness unless—”
“I don’t care for your reasons. You’re not taking the Core,” Kamari said. Without waiting for a response, he unleashed a series of rapid punches, each sending fiery bursts toward Zaire’s chest.
Zaire moved like a shadow. His body twisted and contorted unnaturally as he weaved between Kamari’s strikes, each punch narrowly missing. He dodged again before retaliating. Shadows coiled around his fist as he brought it crashing down. Kamari weaved backward just in time to feel the rush of cold air as Zaire''s fist past his face. The ground cracked open, and jagged lines of darkness spread from the point of impact.
Kamari immediately countered, pivoting into a flaming uppercut that connected with Zaire’s torso. The fire exploded on contact. Kamari''s eyes widened briefly—he had finally landed a hit.
However, Zaire straightened and brushed the small flames from his chest as though they were nothing more than pests. His black wings flared behind him, and he snarled, “You’re a fool, Young Phoenix. You have no idea what I’m trying to accomplish. This isn’t about power or control; it’s about survival. The Nether will consume the Realm unless you hand over the Phoenix Core.”
“I’ve heard enough of your lies, Zaire! You’re not taking it—not now, not ever!”
"Then you''ve sealed your fate."
Dark tendrils lashed out from Zaire''s body like whips. Kamari barely had time to react, raising a wall of dense flames. The shadows collided with the fire, and the shockwave knocked Kamari backward. His feet dug into the dirt as he struggled to maintain his footing. His arms trembled. Sweat blinded him. Zaire’s power was overwhelming, but he refused to give in. He let out a fierce cry, forcing his flames hotter, and he smashed through Zaire’s dark tendrils, reducing them to smoke.
For a moment, they stood in silence. Kamari panted as he began to feel the toll of the battle. Zaire, however, stood tall with no signs of fatigue.
Zaire’s cold smile returned. “I can do this all day, Young Phoenix. Can you?”
“I won’t stop fighting." Kamari clenched his fiery fists. "Not until you’re defeated.”

The rest of Tempest was engaged in their battle against the relentless Infernal horde. The sounds of snarling creatures and the occasional explosion of elemental power echoed through the forest.
Leon quickly assessed the battlefield amidst the chaos. “Eli, handle the goblins! We must thin them out before they swarm us!” he shouted through the crystal comms.
Elijah gave a sharp nod. He dashed into the trees, each step sending electric surges through the ground. Every goblin unfortunate enough to cross his path fell instantly, their bodies reduced to smoldering ash.
Imani was preoccupied with an orc, but even then, she couldn''t help but notice Elijah’s power. But it wasn''t the time for admiration. The ground shook beneath her as more orcs barreled forward, followed by flaming Cynders and screeching Vexes. Yet, she held her ground.
Streams of water manifested around her, twisting into razor-sharp blades. They cleaved through one orc’s arm, then wrapped around its legs before freezing solid, immobilizing it in place. She used the orc as a platform, leaping high in the air. There, she conjured countless ice shards. Their vast amount darkened the sky before they rained down on the battlefield.
Meanwhile, Leon focused on the Cynders. He waved his hand, and the oxygen was withdrawn from around them. Their flames sputtered out, and their once-blazing forms dissipated into smoke. If you come across this story on Amazon, it''s taken without permission from the author. Report it.
The vexes swooped in next, but he was ready. Wind blades materialized and sliced through the vexes'' wings with ease. The creatures let out guttural screeches before plummeting to the ground.
Elijah had finished annihilating the goblins and was now focused on the singular High Orc with an affinity to air. The High Orc roared, summoning a howling gust of wind and aiming it directly at Elijah. It tore through the forest, uprooting trees and sending debris flying. But before it could reach Elijah, Leon intercepted it. He braced for the impact and absorbed the gale, redirecting it with far greater force. The wind hit the High Orc head-on, sending the massive creature tumbling backward.
Imani seized the opportunity. She slammed her hands into the earth, and jagged ice spikes erupted from the ground, racing toward the High Orc. The ice wrapped around its legs, trapping the creature where it stood. The High Orc roared and thrashed in a futile attempt to break free.
Elijah’s eyes lit up with a mischievous glint as electricity crackled around him. “Night, night." He launched himself forward at breakneck speed. The High Orc barely had time to register the attack before his electrified form pierced its chest. It let out a deafening shriek before collapsing.
Elijah landed in a skid and grinned as he threw his fists in the air. “Hell yeah! That’s how it’s done!”
But the victory was short-lived. Leon narrowed his eyes and quickly summoned a gust of wind, pulling the squad back together.
The ground beneath them trembled, and Elijah’s grin quickly faded as the bodies of the fallen Infernals dissolved into pure Nether Energy. It all gathered into a single point: the fallen High Orc. Then, a low, ominous hum filled the air as the energy seeped into the corpse.
Slowly, something vast and monstrous began to rise. At first, it was just a shadow—a shifting, unnatural darkness that blotted out the light. Then, the massive figure emerged fully, its grotesque form looming over them.
A Leviathan.
It stretched skyward, serpentine and unholy, its sheer size defying comprehension. Obsidian scales rippled like liquid night, gleaming faintly with an eerie, unnatural sheen. Crimson eyes, burning like molten coals, filled with an intelligence that felt ancient and malevolent. The High Orc they had just defeated was a titan in its own right, but this creature made it look like a mere insect.
The earth groaned beneath the weight of its coiling body. Dust rose in choking clouds as the Leviathan’s tail swept through the forest, obliterating the trees with a single, careless motion.
Then it roared—a sound so deep and otherworldly it seemed to come from the very bones of the earth. The heavens trembled at its fury while the terrified wildlife scattered.
Elijah stumbled back. Every breath felt harder, as though the sheer force of the Leviathan''s aura was enough to crush his lungs. The rest of the squad was frozen, their expressions shifting from disbelief to horror. None of them could look away.
This wasn’t just another Infernal. It was a force of nature. And it had set its sights upon them.
"Ah, fuck," Elijah muttered.

Sweat slicked Kamari''s skin as he fought desperately to catch his breath, but Zaire''s attacks continued like an unrelenting storm. Kamari''s fire lashed out wildly, but Zaire’s dark energy smothered them.
Kamari''s mind raced as he searched for an opening—any way to turn the tide, but the demon moved with terrifying efficiency. Every movement was devised to crush Kamari’s defenses. It wasn’t just Zaire''s attacks; it was the sheer intensity of his presence. Kamari couldn''t help but feel like he was being dragged deep into the cold depths of a dark ocean.
With a desperate roar, Kamari threw himself forward and slammed his palm into Zaire’s chest. The force of the attack was explosive as flames burst out in a violent blaze. Kamari had done it. A gaping hole tore through Zaire.
But Zaire didn’t fall.
His lips curled into a slow, mocking grin as shadows swirled around the wound, knitting his body back together. “You fight well, Young Phoenix. But did you truly believe you could best me?"
Shadow tendrils reached out and coiled tightly around Kamari, pinning him to the ground. They pressed in on him, squeezing the breath from his lungs and suffocating the light from his flames.
“I could end your life with a mere thought.” Zaire continued. “But your death… It would be such a waste. Now, stop resisting and relinquish the Core.”
The haunting memories of the Red Massacre flashed in Kamari‘s mind: the terrified screams, the raging flames, and his parents'' lifeless bodies. He glared at Zaire. He was responsible for everything, the one who had shattered his world. The thought ignited a deep anger within him. His flames flickered in response before roaring to life, burning away the shadows and hurling Zaire a short distance away.
Kamari pushed himself to his feet. His body trembled, yet he stood tall with golden fire wrapped around his arms. “You want the Phoenix Core?” His voice was low. “Come and take it.”

The Leviathan raised its massive head and unleashed a torrent of acid across the clearing. The deadly spray hissed as it reduced everything in its path to sludge.
Leon, Imani, and Elijah scattered. The ground sizzled beneath their feet as the acid transformed the forest floor into a toxic wasteland. Leon shot into the sky, summoning a powerful gust of razor-sharp wind. It hammered against the Leviathan, but its thick, scaly hide absorbed the force as though it were nothing more than a gentle breeze.
Elijah zigzagged across the forest floor, unleashing lightning bolts into the beast. However, it wasn’t enough; once again, the Leviathan''s thick scales absorbed the attack.
Imani knelt on the ground and raised her hands. Immediately, the temperature dropped as a massive spear of ice slowly formed above her. She threw her arms forward with a considerable amount of effort. The ice spear slammed into the Leviathan''s chest, piercing its armored hide. A loud shriek tore from the beast’s throat as black blood spilled from the wound.
Just as quickly, the Leviathan''s flesh began to knit itself back together, shattering the ice spear.
"It’s healing too quickly!” Imani spoke into the crystal comms.
Leon hovered above, watching the Leviathan‘s flesh as it formed back together. His mind raced a mile a minute. Then it clicked. He called out to Elijah over the crystal comms.
"Eli, I have a plan."
"Is it a good plan?"
"You''re not going to like it."
Elijah sighed and ran a hand through his dreadlocks. “Great.”
Leon descended next to Imani. "Imani, strike the same spot on its chest again. We''ll take it from there."
Imani nodded. She knelt and summoned her power once more. This time, the ice spear she conjured was much larger. She hurled the spear forward with all her might, and it plunged deep into the Leviathan''s chest.
The Leviathan let out another deafening roar. However, once again, its flesh began to heal.
"Not this time," Leon muttered.
He directed a powerful gust of wind into the gaping wound. The intense air pressure cut into the Leviathan''s flesh, preventing the wound from sealing shut.
"Eli, you''re up!"
Elijah groaned dramatically. He had pieced Leon''s plan together, and he, indeed, did not like it. "Couldn''t you have come up with a better plan?"
His skin crackled with energy as he charged his entire body before launching into the Leviathan’s exposed chest. There was a deafening boom, followed by a cascade of lightning. A powerful shockwave traveled across the clearing, rocking the earth as chunks of the Leviathan’s flesh shot through the air. What remained of its once-colossal body collapsed in a squirming mass littered with fractured scales and broken bones. Soon after, it all slowly dissolved into dark ash.
Elijah skidded to a halt and repeatedly muttered, “Please don’t regenerate,” almost like a prayer.
The battlefield was now silent, with the only sound coming from the dozens of sizzling pools of acidic sludge.
“Yes!” Elijah shouted, pumping his fist into the air.
Imani wiped the sweat from her forehead as her breaths slowed. She smiled at Elijah and said, “Nice work.”
“Eh. It was light work. But let’s not make it a habit.”
Leon walked up to them. “Don’t get too comfortable. We’re not done yet.”

Kamari''s flames surged. Each punch he threw pushed Zaire back step by step, and for a brief moment, he had the upper hand. But Zaire was far from defeated. Shadows erupted from his body and quickly extinguished Kamari’s flames. They then wrapped around Kamari’s limbs, immobilizing and pinning him to the ground.
"Enough!" Zaire shouted, driving his claws into Kamari’s chest.
Kamari felt the pull on the Phoenix Core as it was slowly hauled from him. His body convulsed.
“No, you don’t!” Elijah''s voice echoed, followed by a bolt of lightning. It struck Zaire, blasting him off of Kamari with the force of a crackling explosion.
Imani, Leon, and Elijah rushed into the clearing and immediately formed a protective line before Kamari. Zaire regained his footing and released a growl of frustration. His eyes gleamed with malice, and four massive orcs emerged from the shadows.
“Why must you insist on interfering?” Zaire shouted.
Imani and Elijah exchanged glances before launching at the orcs in perfect sync. Imani’s hands shimmered with azure energy as she conjured pools of water, freezing the ground beneath the Orcs and trapping their massive feet in place. She then summoned a hailstorm of ice spears that rained down upon them. The sharp projectiles pierced through their thick hides, leaving gaping wounds that oozed blackened blood.
Elijah slammed his hands into the ground, and a wave of branching lightning raced forward. The Orcs howled in agony as they were electrocuted to a crisp.
Elijah and Imani regrouped with Kamari and Leon.
Kamari trembled, and his flames flickered as he struggled to his feet. Despite that, his spirit remained unbroken. He refused to back down—not now, not ever.
Imani acted swiftly, unleashing a blast of freezing energy. It struck Zaire full force, encasing his body in a thick layer of glistening ice. Leon seized the opportunity and materialized a Suppressor Collar as he closed in on Zaire. But a shadowy tendril erupted from the ice as he reached for Zaire’s neck. Its target was Leon’s heart, but thankfully, Leon instinctively coated his chest with hardened Enre. The tendril struck him with indescribable force, launching him over and out into the forest.
"Leon!" Kamari shouted.
With a growl, Zaire shattered the ice that imprisoned him. "I can''t allow myself to be captured! Not until my mission is complete!" he roared.
His aura expanded, forming a suffocating dome of Enre that enveloped Kamari, Imani, and Elijah. It diminished their Enre. Kamari’s flames extinguished, Imani’s ice blades melted away, and Elijah''s lightning disappeared.
“Damn it!” Kamari muttered.
The squad wasted no time. They conjured crystals in their hands. Kamari''s Irei Crystal pulsed with a vibrant red hue; Imani''s Aewa Crystal shimmered in a calm, deep blue; and Elijah''s Source Crystal crackled with small arcs of lightning.
“We only need thirty seconds until his Aura fades,” Kamari said.
”Thirty seconds,” Imani echoed the words.
Elijah nodded, but his focus was elsewhere. His eyes darted nervously to and from the direction Leon had been hurled.
“Go, Elijah,” Kamari urged. “Find Leon. We’ve got this.”
Elijah hesitated, but with a reluctant nod, he sped out of the clearing.
Kamari shattered the crystal in his hand and absorbed the crimson energy. His flames reignited.
"Thirty seconds," he muttered.
