Masks and Measures

"The finest mask maker in Duskreach," Wyvern said, studying the shop from their rooftop perch. "Supplies all the noble houses. Including, conveniently, Lord Morrow''s mansion."

"Magical security?" Solstice asked, still savoring how easily he could balance on the narrow ledge.

Catalyst squinted through a crystalline monocle that occasionally sparked. "Complex. Beautiful, really. Layers of protection spells woven together like... like..."

"Like something about to explode?" Wyvern suggested.

"That was one time! Well, three times. This week." She adjusted the monocle. "But no, these wards are serious. Breaking them would alert half the city."

Wyvern''s smile suggested he''d been waiting for this moment. "Good thing we''re not breaking in then. We''re walking through the front door."

The plan was elegant in its simplicity. Catalyst would pose as a noble lady interested in a custom commission. While the master craftsman was distracted, Wyvern would locate the masks already prepared for Morrow''s mansion. Solstice would watch for trouble and provide backup if needed.

Of course, nothing was ever that simple.

"Welcome, my lady," the shop owner bowed as Catalyst swept in, wearing robes that somehow managed to be both elegant and slightly singed. "How may I serve you?"

"I require," she announced in a passable aristocratic accent, "something suitable for making one''s rivals spontaneously combust with envy. Metaphorically! Mostly metaphorically."

While she launched into an increasingly elaborate description of her requirements, Wyvern slipped into the back like a shadow detaching itself. Solstice watched through the window, positioned as a lady''s guard.

    Then the complications started.

First came a genuine noble, arriving for a fitting. Catalyst, improvising wildly, engaged her in a dramatic debate about proper mask etiquette that somehow involved theoretical physics. The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Then one of Catalyst''s random enchantments caused all the display masks to start singing. Fortunately, the shop owner took this as a sign of her impressive magical lineage.

"Got them," Wyvern''s voice whispered from nowhere. "But we have company. Morrow''s men, coming to collect their order early."

Solstice tensed, but kept his position. Inside, Catalyst was explaining how mask symmetry related to thaumaturgical resonance patterns.

"We need a distraction," Wyvern added.

    "No explosions," Solstice muttered.

"No promises," Catalyst sang under her breath. Then, louder: "Oh! What''s that behind you?"

When everyone turned to look, she "accidentally" knocked over a rack of enchanted masks. The resulting cascade of magical reactions was... impressive.

Feathers sprouted from the walls. Colors reversed themselves. The noble lady''s hat turned into a rather confused pigeon. And somehow, in the chaos, Wyvern slipped out with their prizes while Catalyst made a graceful exit, leaving behind both payment and apologies.

"Did you really need to turn his beard into butterflies?" Solstice asked as they made their escape.

"Actually, that wasn''t me," Catalyst admitted. "Sometimes magic just likes to have fun too."

Wyvern produced three masks from his shadowcloth bag. Each was a masterwork of artistry and enchantment. The first, clearly meant for Morrow himself, radiated dark power. The others were elegant but simpler, meant for trusted lieutenants.

"Perfect forgeries will take time," he said, "but we can work with these. The magical signatures are already keyed to the mansion''s wards."

"I can modify them," Catalyst offered. "Though, um, maybe somewhere with fewer breakable things nearby."

Solstice studied his reflection in a window, holding up one of the lieutenant''s masks. For a moment, three faces looked back – the warrior, the dreamer, and something in between.

"The mansion''s security expects these specific masks," Wyvern explained. "With these, we''ll be practically invisible. Until we make our move."

    "Assuming nothing explodes," Solstice added.

Catalyst managed to look both innocent and slightly worried. "Define ''explodes''..."

As they returned to the Guild''s vault, Solstice felt that familiar joy in his restored movement, but tempered now with purpose. They were one step closer to their goal, one mask closer to revealing the truth behind Lord Morrow''s dark plans.

And if some of the shop''s masks were still singing operatically behind them... well, that was just part of working with chaos.
