Weekend Rhythms

he coffee shop had indeed grown used to Clara''s presence. The barista had already covered nearby tables with plastic sheets before they sat down.

"So about the break-in," Jonathan began, but his phone buzzed. The twins'' basketball schedule. He''d nearly forgotten.

    "Problem?" Marcus asked, too casually.

"Twin six-year-olds with back-to-back games in..." Jonathan checked the time, "forty minutes."

"That sounds chaotic," Clara said, somehow managing to spill coffee without actually drinking any. "I like chaos. Theoretically. From a safe distance."

"You should come," Marcus suggested, earning surprised looks from both Clara and Jonathan. "For security purposes. Professional observation of crowd dynamics."

"Right," Clara said. "Security. Not because you''ve been finding excuses to extend our consultations all week."

The tips of Marcus''s ears reddened slightly – a detail Jonathan filed away with professional interest.

The elementary school gym smelled of fresh paint and old sweat. Lucas sat on the bench, serious and focused, while Liam bounced around the court like a caffeinated pinball. Their different approaches to everything, even basketball, always amazed Jonathan.

"They''re nothing alike, are they?" Clara had appeared beside him, lab coat exchanged for a sweater that somehow already had mysterious stains. "Twins usually demonstrate fascinating genetic variations despite identical DNA sequencing..."

She continued her scientific analysis until Marcus joined them, somehow having charmed the entire mothers'' booster club in the time it took to cross the gym.

The evening developed its own rhythm. Lucas played methodically, every shot carefully considered. Liam treated defense like a game of tag, surprisingly effective despite his chaos. Clara''s running commentary shifted between genetic theory and genuine excitement. Marcus kept finding reasons to bring her water, snacks, scientific journals he''d "happened to have."You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

"Dad!" Jake''s voice cut through the noise between games. "You''re coming to my game tomorrow, right? Coach says I might start!"

Jonathan''s thirteen-year-old tried to look cool about it, but excitement leaked through. "Wouldn''t miss it. Though we''ll have to coordinate with your sister''s dance..."

"I can help!" Clara volunteered, then looked surprised at herself. "I mean, I used to dance. Before the incident with the experimental leg warmers. They weren''t supposed to actually warm legs to combustion temperatures..."

Saturday morning found them all at Jake''s game. He did start, playing with the same intensity he brought to being the eldest brother. Jonathan noticed Marcus scanning crowds, exits, sight lines – professional habits dying hard.

The real challenge came that evening. Emma''s first formal dance meant a hurricane of preparation that somehow swept Clara into its midst.

"I know we''re supposed to be discussing the break-in," she said, helping Emma with her hair. "But I think I just turned her hairspray into a mild antigravity solution."

Emma''s hair floated ethereally. "This is so cool! Can we keep it like this?"

"Absolutely not," Jonathan said, just as Clara said, "Maybe just for tonight?"

He caught Marcus hiding a smile, the man''s usual smooth demeanor softening around the edges.

The weekend wrapped like a closing symphony – Jake proud of his game, the twins arguing about who scored more points, Emma''s hair finally obeying normal physics. Through it all, the three adults kept finding themselves in each other''s orbit, as if drawn together by something beyond coincidence.

"You know," Clara said Sunday evening, back in her lab coat, "I still haven''t properly explained about the formula."

"Tomorrow," Jonathan promised. "After I figure out how Lucas managed to turn his jersey inside out while playing."

"And after my next security consultation," Marcus added, looking at Clara.

"Right. Security. Very important." She knocked over something that started smoking. "Though perhaps we should meet somewhere less... combustible."

Jonathan watched them dance around each other, feeling that strange familiarity again. Like they''d fought side by side in another life. But that was ridiculous.

    Wasn''t it?
