Chapter 282
December 8th, seventeen days before Christmas, is the day Brett and Kaley got engaged.
Kaley found out Brett had injured his left hand and personally visited him in the hospital. She initially
thought it was a minor injury, but was surprised to find his hand heavily bandaged with a cast.
"How did you get so badly injured?"
Brett, who had been dozing off, abruptly opened his eyes upon hearing Kaley''s voice.
"Why are you here?"
"I heard you hurt your hand, so I came to see you." Kaley looked at his left hand and frowned. She
wondered how he was going to wear a ring on their engagement day given his severe injury.
"Leave!"
Before, Brett had just found Kaley''s behavior somewhat distasteful, but now he was truly repulsed
by her. His cold gaze and tone did not conceal this at all.
Seemingly oblivious, Kaley responded, "No matter how much you despise me, in a few days, you
will still have to be engaged to me."
"I don''t need you to remind me," Brett retorted with a cold face. "Even if you marry me, I won''t touch
you."
Kaley didn''t care, after all, she just wanted to be Ms. Windham.
"Is that so?" she said, smiling. "You seemed to have said the same thing when you married
Izabe."
Brett replied, "Kaley, I don''t love you anymore. Even if you marry me, you will get nothing."
"Who said so? As long as I marry you, Izabe will forever be the mistress!" Kaley repeated the
words Izabe used to provoke her back then, verbatim.
Seeing Brett''s gaze grow colder, Kaley felt a bit afraid and took a step back. "Izabe said those
words first."
"So, you''re doing this to get back at her?"
She had been humiliated by Izabe; what was wrong with wanting a bit of revenge? After all,
Izabe took something that she shouldn''t have.
That''s what Kaley thought but didn''t dare to say. Instead, she said, "No, it''s because I like you."
"If I didn''t have a penny and became aplete waste, would you still like me?" Brett countered.
Kaley hesitated before saying, "Of course, I would."
Brett''s gaze was filled with mockery. Kaley maintained a safe distance from him, three meters away,
but she could still feel his chilling stare.

"You should go. Don''te again."
"But our engagement ceremony..."
Brett interrupted her, "Don''t worry, I''ll be there on time. And don''t forget to take care of your health, I
don''t want any filth blood enter Izabe''s body."
Kaley''s face turned pale. She turned to leave, but suddenly turned back to ask him one more
question, "Brett, I''ve always wanted to ask you. If it hadn''t been me who saved you nine years ago,
would you still have asked Izabe to donate blood to me when I was about to die in a car
ident?"
Brett replied, "There are no ''ifs'' in this world."
Kaley forced a smile, her eyes filled with loneliness. "Can''t we really go back to the past?"
"There are no emotions in the world that can go back to the past. Even if there can, everything has
completely changed. The only thing that can go back is memory. But the memories I have of you
are not worth reminiscing for me."
He should have understood long ago that he and Izabe could never go back to the past. The
things he had done to her had already lost him the chance to salvage their rtionship. It was just a
pity that he realized this toote.
"I understand." Kaley turned and left. The person who saved Brett nine years ago was not her, and
there was no possibility between them at all.
After Kaley left, the empty ward quieted down again. When the medical staff came to check, Brett
asked, "How many more days do I have to stay in the hospital?"
"You just came in yesterday. At the very least, you''ll need to stay for a week. Besides, with your
hand in a cast, it won''t be convenient for you to do anything at home. You might as well stay in the
hospital to rest properly." The nurse noticed that the IV was almost finished and began to remove it
for him.
"If he keeps getting IVs, it''s inconvenient to move around with a needle stuck in his right hand all the
time," she thought.
Brett looked somewhat irritated. He had only injured his hand, he wasn''t paralyzed, why did he need
to stay in the hospital for so many days?
He couldn''t stand being in the hospital for two days, let alone Izabe who had to lie in bed for ten
days or even half a month in such an environment. It made Brett sad. Kaley''s visit had stirred up
many memories in him. He remembered Izabe mistaking him for Ryker Dempsey, carrying the
secret love in her heart for sixteen years.
Had she not mistaken him for someone else, would she have already been with Ryker, maybe even
had children?
It was just a hypothesis, but even the thought made his heart ache unbearably, as if it were being
pounded by a sledgehammer, shattering his heart.
Come to think of it, his fate with Izabe was quite simr: both were saved by someone, then fell in
love. The only difference was that Izabe loved the wrong person, while he found the right person
but loved her wrongly.
If the one who saved him initially was not Kaley, would the fate between him and Izabe be
completely rewritten?
Izabe could feel that her stomach illness was not ordinary. Brett could fabricate her entire
background, so he could probably bribe the doctor to make a fake medical report.
Maybe she was already critically ill. Brett threatened her not tomit suicide, so she wouldn''t. Her
life was not worth anything anyway. She might as well kill Brett directly. Unfortunately, yesterday she
only managed to stab Brett''s hand with a fork. At most, he would be disabled, but he wouldn''t die.
The grass in the courtyard outside had turned yellow. A few days ago, Adrian had bought a box of
weed killer, very effective, the weeds had withered within two days.
At the time, Izabe had secretly switched a bottle and hid it under the bed.
Adrian was arranging for someone to trim thewn outside, and he didn''t have time toe back.
Tiara and Katie didn''t care about her.
Izabe cooked a pot of soup, only wishing to poison Brett. She poured the entire bottle of weed
killer into it, and the soup emitted a foul smell.
Izabe retched once, covering her mouth and ran into the bathroom to vomit. After vomiting
several times, the water in the toilet bowl was stained red, and she wiped her mouth.
This body of hers was already at the end of its tether, like withered grass, seemingly unbreakable
on the outside, but easily crumbling upon touch.
She didn''t know how many days she had left, but as long as she was alive, she was determined to
take revenge on Brett.
"Oh my, what''s this smell in the soup? Did you spoil it?"
Izabe came out to see Katie standing outside the kitchen, pinching her nose.
Without changing her face, Izabe walked over and said, "I added some ingredients that are good
for your health, it''s normal for it to smell a bit pungent."
Katie tiptoed curiously to look into the pot, the soup was ck.
"I''ve never cooked soup that turned this color before."
"There are many kinds of soup, it''s normal for them to be different colors."
Again, Katie asked curiously, "Ma''am, did you cook this soup for yourself?"
"It''s for."
Looking at the ck water in the pot, Katie thought that only if Brett had lost his taste, or had some
issue with his brain, would he drink it.
Izabe wanted to serve the soup, but Katie quickly said, "Ma''am, let me do it."
Izabe''s hands were not nimble, if she knocked over a pot of soup, it would be a small matter, but
if it scalded her, that would be an issue.
Izabe quietly stepped aside and watched Katie gently pour the soup into a thermos.
There was a bit of residue left in the pot, Izabe pointed to the trash can and said, "Pour that out."
When she saw Katie clean the pot, she finally felt relieved, then picked up the thermos and called
the butler outside to apany her to the hospital.
There were two bodyguards standing at the entrance of Brett''s ward, and he himself was busy
working inside the room.
Hearing someone had brought soup, Brett instinctively thought it was Kaley again, and he said
irritably, "I don''t want it, tell her to go back."
The door was just ajar, so the people outside naturally heard his voice.
"Since he doesn''t want it, let''s leave."
Hearing this familiar voice, Brett disregarded the needle still attached to his right hand and
immediately stood up and said, "Wait, Izabe!"
Izabe was carrying the thermos, with Adrian following behind her.
