Chapter 740
The ck Cayenne wheeled out of the hospitalpound and wheezed through the dark night
streaking with colorful neons until it halted to a stop outside a star-rated hotel.
Addy came back to the country with her balletpany and for her convenience, she chose to stay
at the hotel together with her colleagues. And as she had mentioned before at his office, she had
deliberately arranged to have her room decorated.
The car stopped and she unfastened her seat belt, She picked up the birthday cake beside her and
peered at him, feeling herself bursting with delight that he would be celebrating her birthday with
her.
At least that was what she thought all the way here. Simon made no movement of removing his
seatbelt and getting off. "What''s going on, Simon?" she asked, puzzled, "Aren''t youing up with
me?"
"I''m not going up, Addy," said Simon, exhaling a mouthful of fume.
"Simon?!" Addy gasped, confused.
Simon flicked some ashes off his cigarette. Those charming eyes of his gleamed in the neon lights
as he brooded morosely. He snapped apart his cigarette and muttered quietly, "Addy, we gotta talk."
It was night and the usual din and clutter of the hospital during the day was no more.
Emily gripped the bag tightly in her grasp like how nervous she was when she was in the cab just
now. It grew moist but she did not let go. Wearing a nk look, she began beelining towards the
hospital building.
Hanging her head low over her shoulders, she had almost bumped into several visitors who had
come to visit their rtives at the hospital.
She trailed past the nurses'' station and before she could ask, one of the nurses saw her and she
called, "Mrs. Chin!"
Emily gave a look at the notice board on the wall and mouthed at her, "Is his surgery over?"
"It was finished half an hour ago!" said the nurse.
"Oh, I''ll go find him then..." Emily''s eyshes trembled as she nodded, replying quietly.
The nurse looked as if she wanted to say more, but Emily could hardly hear anything. Her legs
moved on their own without her knowing, drifting her towards the direction of his office. Her hands
gripped more tightly on the bag in her hands which dangled only a set of keys and a stack of A4
papers inside.
Since her discovery of the divorce papers in his suitcase, Emily had never been able to escape the
chaotic panic and confusion now gnawing at her.
By the time she regained her senses, she found herself by the window, her legs so numb from
standing too long. The sun was fully set and the sky outside was utterly dark. She groped for her
cell phone and called him again and again. At first, he was not answering, but after that, it was
completely shut off.
Like a convict who craved the reason for his sentence, she grabbed the divorce papers and bolted
for the door.
At the hospital, she was about to reach his office when the nurse caught up from behind, heaving
for breath, "Dr. Chin had left the hospital a long time ago, Mrs. Chin!"
"He left?" Emily was stunned.
"Yes!" The nurse nodded and looked at her hesitantly, "With a woman called Swan. They left just
now together..."
Emily stood there, rooted to the ground.
The nurse took her leave and left. Emily looked up. Sure enough, the office door was locked, and
there wasn''t the slightest bit of light peeking out. His office really was empty.
Staring nkly at the door for seconds, Emily dragged herself down the same way to go back.
She rounded a corner and stumbled upon another two nurses who were enjoying their time chatting
and exchanging gossip as they pushed their trolley. The corridor was deserted and she could hear
every word.
Emily had always paid no mind to workce gossip here. Especially, since she nearly bumped into
a tryst between a doctor and a nurse during their night shifts. And she did not intend to start
showing interest until two names made her stop in her tracks.
"I don''t know if you recognized her, that Ms. Swan who came looking for Dr. Chin? That''s the
famous ballet performer! She''s really famous!"
"No wonder, I thought she looked so beautiful but yet vaguely familiar! was so beautiful and a little
familiar. I just got tickets for her next performance "the Chill Lake" from a reseller agent just a few
days ago! She really was heavenly. I even looked in about her. She''s not only pretty, and she''s well-
educated too. From a good family, I don''t doubt!"
"She''s is more beautiful in person!"
"Yeah, but what is she to Dr. Chin?"
The first nurse who spoke suddenly turned hushed and mysterious, "I was there for antibiotics when
I saw it! There''s something between Dr. Chin and that Ms. Swan! They were already holding hand
and I bet they would have hugged if I had note!"
"Wow! No wonder! I saw Ms. Swan holding a birthday cake when they were leaving just now! They
must be celebrating their birthday! How romantic! But where does that leave Ms. Chin?" she gasped
atst, at a total loss.
"What can she do? No wedding''s guaranteed these days. Divorce rates are almost catching up to
marriage rates! And to put it bluntly, Ms. Swan looks better matched with Dr. Chin, if you put Mrs.
Chin beside them..."

Emily did not know how did she even manage to find her way out of the hospital.
The gossamer orb hung up high in the sky, glimmering brightly against the darkened backdrop of
the night. But she felt something gnawing fiercely at her inside, leaving her painful and yet lost.
Perhaps it was not that she did not understand him. She might have not seen
who he really was from the start.
As the end of their agreement loomed near, Emily, at the insistence of her cousin Selina, had tried
probing him for answers. Despite hiszy and flippant mood, he had evidentlye to a decision.
Even as Addy hade open to her, she had been clinging on to hope for the past few days...
Emily emptied the contents of the bag and stared at words: Divorce Papers. Every swish and stroke
of the letters were like shes that cut deep into her heart.
They had shared an intimate and valuable time together during the disaster at Yany State. They
were happy, they experienced honor and disgrace together, and they even transpired the sensation
of life and death with each other. Yet now it seemed that all that was just as fickle as a boardroom
agreement.
How is four yearspared to a person''s life time?
It wasn''t long, but it wasn''t short either. But how could it everpare to a fifteen-year-old
rtionship?
"Since this is an agreement, Simon. How long do you want it to be?"
"Four years."
She recalled how he had said those words at the registration of their marriage at the Civil Affairs
Bureau. Emily closed her eyes and smiled bitterly.
She thought "four years" was just his manner of buying time. That "four years" sounded just like his
name Simon. She did not think that he had been literal.
You''ve been wrong all along, Emily Sam!
