    The whirring sounds of machines echoed from behind, constantly reminding him that time was slipping


    away.


    After a while, he choked out on the words.


    “Give up on the kid.”


    The doctor handed him the surgery consent form. Isaac numbly signed his name, then slowly walked


    out of the emergency room, head bowed low.


    The doctors behind him exchanged nces before entering the emergency room.


    “Prepare for surgery”


    The door to the emergency room closed.


    Grace and Hannah turned their heads immediately as if waiting for an oue.


    Isaac felt as if he were being stabbed in the chest as he said, “The baby can’t make it.”


    Hannah burst into tears immediately.

    sorrow stuck in his throat. He couldn’t make a sound; just quietly hung up the phone.

    Night fell. The phone kept ringing. It was as if Isaac was jolted awake from a nightmare. He mmed
