Chapter 18: Training

“Wrong again, give me 20”, Vance said as he sipped away at his, I don’t even remember him having tee, where did he get that from?

“All the way down”, after he made me run till I dropped he finally realized that having me run

the whole time wasn’t sustainable so he switched to push-ups as he’s punishment.

skill acquired: Gear building lv1→Tick, tock the gears go on the clock. You have the ability to build machines with gears

I managed to obtain the building skill, although it didn’t seem to help me much as I was still doing push-ups.

I stood up, sweat dripping from my forehead and picked the gears, please work this time, I grabbed some tools and went for it

    Connection attempted….success

    Simple machine made__quality: bad

    I did it!

“Finally!”, I swung my hands up in celebration

    Clap clap

“Took you long enough, I was expecting this to take a few days so this is a pleasant surprise”, he took the final sip of his tea

“Does this mean I finally get to rest?”, I asked on the verge of falling over

“Why not?, just make sure you’re ready for tomorrow, training is going to be a tough one”, That feckin smile, I hate it.

    “Thank you, master”

I walked away scanning my stat screen…never seen that icon before

    Skill level up!!!

    Gear building lv1→lv2

You gain the ability to craft common machines

    Conditions met….Crafting skill lv1→lv2

Crafting skill scales with other skills

    Woodworking lv1→lv2 Reached

Level three skills to lv3 to obtain the Crafting skill level

I read the screen, blinked, and reread it, this is big.

I felt the ends of my lips curl, so all my crafting skills would level up.

I need to test this, I ran to Vance and asked for a sowing kit, and he begrudgingly gave it to me after I pleaded that I would be forced to run around naked if i didn’t fix my clothes.

    Okay let''s do this

    Sowing attempted…success

Usually, that doesn’t happen on the first try, maybe because fixing a rip isn’t so hard?

    Sowing attempted…success

    Sowing attempted…success

    Skill acquired: Sowing lv1

Sowing: Gain the ability to mend, craft and change fabrics

Due to crafting skill, the sowing level is correlated to crafting level

It’s right there in the stat sheet, I’m not hallucinating.

I walked over to the torture center Vance set up and began working on the blueprints

    Connection attempted….failed

“Come on”, even though it failed it felt like my hands just knew where to go, atlease in theory they did, practically not so much

    Connection attempted….failed

“One more”, I was getting close

    Connection attempted….success

    Simple machine made__quality: common

And so the crafting spree began, I flipped through the book to more complex designs and went for it.

Vance walked outside to go wake his apprentice, throwing open the barn doors, he took a gasp of air ready to scream at the top of his lungs to his apprentice.

“Interesting?”, the apprentice didn’t happen to be here

Grimmel ran up to him, “Where’s your owner boy”.

    Arf Arf

“I’m going to take that as you know where and you’ll show me where he went”, the wolf ran as Vance said that

Vance followed the wolf until he came upon a peculiar site, his apprentice was asleep on the ground surrounded by parts

Vance hit his foot on one of the mechanisms and looked down.

“The kid built all this, this something that would take beginner hours to do, I thought it was impressive that he was able to build his first machine so quickly but to do all this”, Vance stared in amazement at what his apprentice had built.

He would never admit that though

He walked up to his sleeping apprentice, reached into his dimensional bag pulled out a bucket filled with water, and threw it toward his apprentice

“Ahhh, why would you do that you sadistic feck”, I screamed the ice-cold water covered me

“Oh look at you with that mouth, how can you be so mean when this was all that you could build, if this were me I would have done triple this, looks like I’ll have to increase your training”

I may have made a grave mistake

“Follow me, today''s lesson is going to be fun I promise”

“I’m going to die”, I hung my head down as I followed him

We walked into his workshop where there was some parchment, pens and blocks of iron sitting on the table

“How much do you know about transmutation?”, Vance asked me

“The ability to change iron to gold, stuff like that”, I answered

“That is a going theory that it’s possible but I doubt it is, but no transmutation is the ability to manipulate objects, namely metals and stones, with magic to change their shape without changing the objects….nature, if that makes sense”, Vance said picking up some paper and placing it on one of the objects

He then reached out his hand and said, “Transmute”, the symbol on the parchment glowed, and the same one appeared in front of his hand floating in the sky and in a brink of an eye the iron ingot turned into some screws, gears, and other bobbles

“Now your turn, grab some paper and follow my instruction”, he said sitting down

    I followed suite

“Okay, step 1, the center, this indicates what type of spell you’ll perform, this is the transmute symbol”

It was an hour glass symbol, I expected it be something more crafty I guess

“The hourglass symbolizes the time we spent in our craft, without the will to dedicate yourself to a skill, it will ultimately be useless to even attempt it”, he said drawing symbols around

He went on to describe how each ring adds some special features, and how if you place more intricate designs the product will be more precise but will cost more mana.

After we had finished drawing he handed me an Iron ingot

    Eye of craftsmen used

Iron ingot: A simple ingot made of 97% Iron: Quality: good

“The higher the quality the easier it is to translate, but skilled craftsmen should be able to perform transmute on any piece of ore.”

I placed the piece of paper on the iron ingot

Holding out my hand, “Transmute”, it felt strange, like stamina was being zapped from my body, Vance said the reason we use parchment was to control how much mana leaves our body and if we didn’t we could lose control of the spell which would lead to our “so unfortunate demise”, his words not mine

    Mana used 5

    Total mana:45

    Skill acquired: Transmute lv1

Transmute: Gain the ability to manipulate an objects form

Due to crafting skill, the transmute skill level is correlated to crafting level

    Transmute lv1→lv2

Transmute lv2: Gain the ability to create more complex shapes

The block split perfectly in two

“Good work, now I want you to do that until you reach level 2, it should take you about 2 to 3 days if we take into account mana drainage”, Vance said preparing to leave

“I sorta already reached level 2”, I stated

“How in the…”, Vance stared at me in awe
