Chapter 768

    Chapter 768

Grace was taken by surprise and shocked when she heard the voice over the phone.

It was a voice that had been absent in her life for far too long.

She was consumed with a mix of both a weird sense of the unknown and a hint of familiarity.

She closed her eyes as she suddenly felt a stabbing pain in her heart. It was so painful that she almost

felt as if she was being suffocated.

"Can you hear me?" Candace''s voice echoed from the other end of the phone. It was so indifferent and

cold as usual. Only this time, it was all the more indifferent.

She remembered Candace''s voice. It was a little hoarse but distinctive.

"Yes I heard you. So you''re back?" Grace responded with difficulty.

"Yes," Candace answered almost instantly. Her voice over the phone was very calm. "Hurry up and

Candace was never there for Grace in any way. Even after all these years, through many ups and

downs, she merely just waltz back into Grace''s life and ordered her around.

She seemed to have forgotten that she had abandoned her children and left without a trace, and now

that she hade back, she ordered them around with not an ounce of guilt.

Grace really felt that Candace''s way of thinking was different from that of an ordinary person.

She felt that it was inappropriate for her to demand that she and Alice hurry over to the Smith''s house

in themanding tone that she used.

She had no right whatsoever to bemanding Grace around.

"Say something, do you hear me? I''m waiting for you girls. Get a move on," Candace said on the other

end of the phone in an overbearing tone.

At that moment, Grace felt extremely cross with her mother''s behavior.

She had never been on good terms with Candace. She was even infuriated with Candace bossing her

    around.

Grace remained silent and did not respond to her.

"Grace, do you hear me? I don''t have much time on my hands. Get a move on. I need to talk to you

girls," Candace pressed on, her tone became more and more domineering,

Grace''s hand which was holding the mobile phone, trembled a little. She responded indifferently,

"Madam Lowe, as far as I know, you and my father have nothing to do with each other already. Also,

you shouldn''t evene back to the Smith family. If you have anything to say to me, you can do so

    right now. I''m listening."

Grace just could not bring herself to be kind to her. In her eyes, anyone could have abandoned her

    except for Candace.

She felt that her mother was cruel.

It was so revolting that she could actually abandon her and Alice, especially when Alice was at such a

    young age.

This was not something that could not be forgiven.

The misery that she and Alice had gone through over the many years of their mother''s absence could

no longer be expressed with words.

Had Candace came back and apologized, she

would not have been so angry.

    But she didn''t.

Not only did she not apologize, but she also had the audacity tomand her and Alice around.

How could such a cruel being be a mother in this world?

"Grace, since you said so, I understand that you hate me," replied Candance with a tone that sounded

like she had had a realization; it was as if she had a thorough understanding of Grace''s emotion.

"Shouldn''t I hate you?" Grace sneered back at her. "Is there a mother like you out there in the world?"

It was not just a small falling out for a mother to abandon her children and live a free and easy life.

Grace was not the least bit kind to her. Her tone was very indifferent and full of usations. She went

on questioning her mother, "Don''t you know what you have done? Do you still want us to respect you,

love you, and treat you as our mother as we did before?"

Candace paused for a moment and sighed, but then, her tone remained calm as usual and she said, "If

you hate me and can''t understand my behavior, you can think about yourself."

She frowned and asked, "What is there to think about myself?"

"You are a mother too, hence you should understand me. Back then, you had no choice but to abandon

one of your twins. You thought you abandoned the ''dead'' child, and so did I. I had no choice but to act

    against my will."

For a moment, Grace felt like there was a knife stabbing her heart.

Her mother''s words made her feel as if there was blood flowing everywhere from the wound.

Candance, as a mother, actually made use of her daughter''s pain as an excuse in order to absolve

herself and let her empathize with herself.

Grace sneered and burst into tears at once.

"I had no choice but to leave you girls, just like you had no choice but to abandon your child," Candace

    exined.

"Shut up," Grace interrupted her. "Madam Lowe, you really surprised me. Your behavior is so appalling.

The reason I lost my child was because of Marry who set me up. She deliberately made me think that

my child was gone, and it was only then did I leave. As for you, Alice and I were still very much alive

when you left us. You even made Dad so enraged that he fell ill right away," Grace med her.

It was also for this reason that her father soon became ill and passed away at an early age.

"You''re really so empty-headed to be yed a fool by Marry." Candace criticized indifferently, "Why

don''t you reflect on how naive you had been?"

"Madam Lowe." Grace said in a t tone, "I think it''s better for you to reflect on your own actions

    instead."

"I''m your mother!" Candace yelled furiously. "Who are you to call me Madam Lowe?"

She refused to meet Candace. Her heart would be broken toe face to face with her horrible

    mother.

"I''m noting," Grace responded just as she did earlier. Under no circumstances, did she want to

    meet Candace.

That would be like ripping open an old wound.

Her heart simply could not go through that again.

Grace closed her eyes as sorrow engulfed her.

"Aren''t you ashamed to be rude to me?" Candace reprimanded her. "Do you think you executed

everything in your life to perfection? Without a single w?"

"What does this have to do with you?" Grace rebutted. "Do you have a bottom line for everything you

do? You are not qualified to educate me."

"So getting pregnant before marriage is your equivalent of having a bottom line?" Candace criticized

even more harshly. "Even if I''m not qualified enough, I''m still your mother. Get a move on here now,"

    ordered Candace.

At this point, Grace''s eyes were scarlet and swollen. Her resentment for Candace was evident in her

    eyes.

"Why should I listen to you?" roared Grace. She felt Candace was as pathetic as a rebellious child.

Grace simply could not obey her instructions.

It was because she had been let down countless times for so many years.

At this time, Zachary, who was listening on the side, couldn''t stand it as well. He snatched the phone

and said to the phone, "Grace, don''t be sad. It''s me who neglected my duty. I didn''t expect her to say

    so."

"Zachary, give me the phone," Candace ordered as she stretched out her hand to get the phone again.
