Lysander offered no response to the previous conversation.

However, Josiah found an opening to share his thoughts, stating contemtively. “The notions of ‘good people‘ and ‘bad people‘ are overly simplistic ssifications, reminiscent of a child’s viewpoint. When you truly immerse yourself in theplexities of society, you’ll discover that individuals exhibit a myriad of traits. Life isn’t merely a matter of ck and white distinctions.”
In
tone of slight usation, Joseph inquired, “Are you suggesting that Ms. Thorne possesses some bad traits?”
Josiah’s expression darkened as he quickly corrected him, “Do not twist my words.”
All I meant was that your understanding is somewhat naive.
However, Joseph countered, “But I agree with you. People are inherentlyplex. Given your stature and position, who knows what hiddenyers you might possess?”
Josiah found himself speechless at this remark.
The conversation took a tense turn as Joseph added, “Even in the presence of Ms. Thorne, you hint at things about her. Though you’re here today to visit me while I’m ill, she remains my senior. We all hail from the same school, and I take no pleasure in hearing insinuations about one of our own.”
Josiah massaged his temples, his patience thinning. “Are you actually a basketball yer or a member of the debate team?” Because you sure can ramble!
Joseph recoiled slightly, addressing Lysander directly, “Ms. Thorne, did I misspeak? Please don’t be I’m not very polished with my words and can be quite straightforward.”
Josiah could only muster a cold, sarcastic chuckle in response, “Ha!”
upset.
Observing the exchange, Lysander felt an eerie sense of déjà vu. It reminded her of the dynamics before their divorce, when simr conversations weremon. However, back then she was married to Josiah, but now, post–divorce, their situations were distinctly different, both legally and morally.
With a keen observation, Lysander noted, “You have a knack for artiction; perhaps a career inw might suit you.”
Joseph pondered, “If I’m studyw, isn’t a strongmand ofnguage essential? That’s crucial for understanding thewbook. Ms. Thorne, nguage isn’t my strong suit. If you’re too busy to tutor me, maybe you could share some tips on improving my essay scores?”
Lysander suggested after a moment’s thought, “If you find some spare time, it could be beneficial to engage in more reading.”
Curious, Joseph asked, “What should I read, though? I’ve already tackled the four great ssical novels, but they didn’t seem to help much. Could you rmend a few other books, Ms. Thorne?”
“I’ll need to think about it. I’ll have Mr. Owen send you some rmendationster,” Lysander responded.
“Thank you, Ms. Thorne!”

Meanwhile, Josiah, unable to voice his irritation, fixed a piercing stare on Joseph, who returried a smug look. The tension between them was palpable, as if charged with a subtle hint of challenge.
Joseph, despite being injured, which arguably granted him a form of immunity, sighed deeply. “It’s not just my ssmates waiting for me; I suspect the papers on my desk are as well. But if I’m serious about pursuing academics, I can’t keep shirking it. When I get back, I’ll definitely hit the books.”
His remarks were quite to Lysander’s liking.
She appreciated his resolve, noting, “Had I known about yourmitment, I would’ve asked your teammates to bring your backpack when we admitted you here. A single ward like this is quite conducive to studying.”
Without hesitation, Josiah added, “Studying should not be postponed. I’ll arrange for someone to fetch your backpack from your school. Just tell me your ss number and seat, and it’s done. Lysander, we’ve fulfilled our duty by visiting; let’s not dy the boy’s studies any longer.
Lysander agreed with a simple nod.
Joseph shuddered at the thought of his mountainous pile of exercise books arriving at the hospital but knew that as long as he firmly refused, it might note to that.
“There’s no need for that trouble,” he stated stiffly. “A ssmate informed me that ournguage teacher has been in good spiritstely. After the night ss, she and the dean n to visit and bring my backpack. That’ll also give me a chance to ask her a few questions.”
Lysander concurred, “Whether it’s sports or academics, the higher your scores, the more doors will open for you. As long as you’re willing to put in the effort, your teachers will definitely support you.”
Joseph nodded eagerly, like a chick pecking at the ground.
“Do you know Mr. Marcus? The one who teaches senior sses, his literature instruction is top–notch. Plus, he often stays behind to answer students‘ queries.”
“Of course, I know him. He’s leading our ss: In fact, he’s supposed toe today with the dean,” Joseph shared, a twinkle in his eye at the coincidence.
What a coincidence this is.
Whenever Lysander spoke of Marcus, her voice carried a tone of deep appreciation.
“That’s fantastic. Mr. Marcus was incredibly patient in helping me solve numerous issues in the past. As long as you’re eager to learn, he’ll teach you earnestly. By the way, who is your homeroom teacher now?” Lysander inquired.
“Mr. Wren,” Joseph responded.
A flicker of surprise crossed Lysander’s face, “Really? He was my homeroom teacher as well.”
“Is that so? Ms. Thome, it seems we truly share a strong connection,” Joseph eximed with a smile.
Lysander asked, “Is he married now? I remember he had a crush on our music teacher back in school. His only hindrance was his thinning hair, which seemed to keep him from pursuing her openly. But we, as students, could clearly see his affection.”

Listening intently to Joseph’s stories about Wren and the music teacher, the smile on Lysanyler’s face. remained, reflecting her genuine happiness for her former mentors. asionally, she would describe the old
appearance of the school that Joseph had never seen.
“Ms. Thorne, there’s something else I wanted to ask you,” Joseph began.
“What is it?”
“Everyone at school has been whispering about it–the ssroom at the end of the first floor in theboratory building is supposedly haunted. They say that ten years ago, a senior girl died there! Rumor had it she hanged herself, trapped in a web of heartbreak. None of us dared to enter that ssroom!”
Lysander shook her head, “No, that’s not possible. That ssroom is used for storing broken desks, chairs, and teaching aids. Only Mr. Jaeger from the janitor’s room has the key. No one else can get in. How could anyone hang themselves in there?”
“Oh, so it was actually fake…”
“It’s not real, don’t be scared,” Lysander reassured him.
Despite Josiah’s pang of jealousy, Lysander continued sharing these stories, never having told him these captivating tales before, yet now she was eagerly telling them to a high school boy she had only recently
Upon noticing Lysander’s interest in the library, Joseph enthusiastically said, “Ms. Thorne, did you not get the chance to visit the library during the school anniversary? Don’t worry, once my injury heals, I’ll go back and take some photos for you to sec.”
Lysander chuckled, “All right then, you better get well soon. But from what you’re implying, could it be that you haven’t really spent much time in the library?”
Joseph felt slightly embarrassed as he admitted, “I’ve been there once before, although…it was to help the new math teacher move some books.”
Josiah saw his opportunity to interject, “Merely browsing around doesn’t count as having truly been there.”
Joseph shot him a look, “Can you not interrupt, please? Ms. Thorne and I have amon topic. We’re discussing things about our school, Harborbrook Fifth High School, which you don’t belong to, so you wouldn’t understand how terrifying our library could be. The thing we students hated the most was book maintenance, and the ce we detested the most was the library!”
Josiah furrowed his brow.
Lysander, sensing his frustration, quickly exined, “Our school library has always had a pest problem. To protect the books from bugs, the librarian frequently sprays a lot of pesticides. The air bes quite pungent, making it difficult to stay there for an extended period.”
“No, it’s just that, this phrase seems somewhat familiar, as if I’ve heard it somewhere before.”
Lysander mimicked Lysanne’s high–pitched voice, “You don’t really know Josiah. The food he detests the most is carrots, and the vor he can’t stand is thyme!”
