Chapter 1774
He was one of Fitch’s people. He’d shown up because he couldn''t reach Fitch; thus he ended up
knocking on Maja''s door.
"Ms. Pennyfeather, you might not be aware, but when someone in politics screws up, their ce of
detention is not your run-of-the-mill cell. Bernard''s rivals are looking to take him down, so as soon
as they got wind that Queena might have been swapped over, they''ve been on this case like
bloodhounds. But the trail led to Mr. Raymond, and the evidence is irond. They''ve found
Queena''s ashes."
Found them? If Bernard was nning on using Queena to control Ian, she would need to be alive,
wouldn''t she? Now they''re saying they found her ashes? What in the world was going on?
"Are we certain those ashes are hers?"
"Positive. The task force has verified it, and Queena left a suicide note that mentioned Mr.
Raymond. Now, with Mr. Raymond locked up, and Bernard facing dismissal, there''s no higher-ups
left to throw Mr. Raymond a lifeline."
When self-interest was at stake, everyone had their own agenda. And Bernard, having been in
power for so many years, had barely made a misstep - except for that time he let Ian whisk Patric
away.
Now that there was a chance to oust him, who would want to let that opportunity slip by?
Maja''s face grew stern. The whole point of having Fitch release Queena was to keep tabs on
Bernard''s actions. But this boomerang hade back to hit Ian instead. It seemed Bernard had
anticipated this move and had set Ian up to take the fall.
Now with Ian in aa, was he really going to be carted off to prison unconscious?
"Who''s in charge of Ian''s transfer?"
"It''s Rachel from the task force. Ms. Pennyfeather, she''s a tough nut to crack and is notorious for
not giving two hoots about anyone''s reputation."
Maja rubbed her temples and wasted no time in getting Rachel''s number. When Rachel picked up
the call and heard it was about Ian, the corner of her mouth curled up in scorn.
"You''re asking about Ian Raymond, the CEO of the Raymond Corporation? The same guy who
caused my mentor deprived of his position?"
The venom in herst words was palpable; it was clear she had a bone to pick with Ian.
Only then did Maja realize Rachel was a former student of Bernard''s and held him in high regard.
Rachel rudely hung up the phone and even blocked Maja''s number.
Maja stared at the now dark screen, her mind a tangled mess. She nced at Beck and Dn
sitting on the couch, wanting to ask something, but not knowing where to even begin.
Dn was sifting through a pile of documents, spreading them out with his slender fingers, "Let''s
not panic just yet. Let''sb through the details carefully. We might have missed something."
With the stakes so high, how could Maja not be anxious? And she was pregnant; any emotional
upheaval could easily lead to nausea.
She took a sip of warm water, herplexion pale. But as Dn flipped through the documents, his
finger paused on one.
"Is it possible that Bernard wasn''t trying to use Ian to resurrect his son, but rather to use Fitch?"
Maja''s eyshes fluttered. She had assumed Bernard was after Ian''s body because of his
persistent targeting.
But now, with Fitch going to that ce and no word from him, could it be that Bernard''s sights had
never been set on Ian, but on Fitch all along?

If that was the case, what was his reason for taking Ian? Her lips pressed together as she watched
Dn stand up to pour her another ss of water.
"Take it easy. The more chaotic it gets, the more we need to stay calm."
